Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - klake87 - 03-10-2021 01:56 PM

I am high on Burno but I was high on Montgomery too. Compare and contrast why you liked one over other. I loved that Montgomery came from an established program. He had a long term mentor. Bruno don’t know as much. Has local ties. What are your thoughts?

FYI.

It's Burno.

But, Frazier also said "Bruno" the other day in the press conference too so....

Haha Burno had to correct his new boss during the press conference.

I like the hunger. Sounds like he wants to prove he can turn things around. Never got that vibe that Montgomery was trying to do that. Honestly felt like Montgomery was trying to be a Spartan in Huskie uniform. Just my opinion. Sometimes these coaches from big programs can get comfortable in their past accomplishments.

A couple of things stood out to me and I fully acknowledge it's not fair to make personality conclusions based on such a small sample size.

But..Burno comes off as a few things.

First, I felt he looked nervous. Understandable and maybe its a good thing. But he wasn't as articulate as I'm sure he'd have preferred to be. Just sounded nervous like he was struggling for some words at times.

Second, he seemed pretty intense. Since, I suppose, we're comparing him to Montgomery, Monty was a loose guy who liked to come off like he was shooting the **** with you all the time. Burno seems like the opposite. He seems like he's laser focused and maybe isn't the most jocular.

Finally, he seems like he cares and carries himself like a mentor. One of the things he told the team was, "I didn't recruit you, but you're my guys now". It's short and to the point. It's also a bit brutal but also comforting. It doesn't get more blunt than that and it's 100% honest. They AREN'T his guys, but he's telling them he accepts them as his own. He's not bullshitting them and ignoring the fact that he inherited them.

It'll be interesting to see it play out.

I guess I feel same way at beginning about both. Why will BURNO be more successful

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - 17Huskies - 03-10-2021 05:44 PM

I agree that I feel similar to the Monty hire...in the end, I just don't think Monty was a great coach, especially in game- meaning he often didn't win those games you need to win to advance the program, which then leads into transfers/recruiting/etc.

Hopefully Burno can coach.

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - BDB5yp - 03-10-2021 06:36 PM

If Burno can recruit like they say he can, he’s going to be successful. X’s And O’s won’t matter if he can’t get the right talent. A lot of these guys on the current roster might not come back.

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - StevenNIU - 03-11-2021 06:25 AM

I think the difference will be the fact that Burno's bio frequently mentions that he was instrumental in developing players. That is something that has been lacking in the recent past.

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - BigChilla - 03-11-2021 08:05 AM

Burno is basically Hammock for the basketball team.

Great recruiter, assistant on some winning teams, well respected by all of the coaches he has worked with. Has ties that will help him with recruiting.

Hammock was all of those things with pro experience- which is not necessary for the college game.

I like the hire, I like the philosophy he will have on the court. He is literally walking in to a terrible program though.

1 to 3 guys can actually play, the others are just tall enough to be basketball players. I know that sounds harsh but that is what it is.

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - dc1 - 03-11-2021 08:26 AM

Monty took over the MAC 12th seed and so does Burno. We are in the same place we were when Monty came here just we are all 10 years older and more pessimistic!

This is 100% false.

Sorry, but this narrative is tiresome. The program that Montgomery took over was astronomically worse than the one Burno is taking over. Are they similar in the year they took over the team? Sure. But that's about it.

Since we're talking about standings and, presumably, record, the team Montgomery took over was 35-83 under its previous coach (and 42-95 if you add in the last Judson season). Patton won 29% of the games he coached at NIU. The team finished last in the division every single year except one (4th of 6 teams but tied for 10th of 12 in the entire conference). Not to mention the cavalier way Patton went about burning bridges in the Chicago area recruiting circles because "he didn't need them".

Patton literally set the program back a decade.

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - huskies77 - 03-11-2021 09:55 AM

There is no way the program is in anywhere near the shape that Patton left it. Monty had the Huskies within four points of going to the finals in the MAC tournament two years ago. Last year they earned a bye into the quarterfinals and were going to play Miami to go to semi finals.

This year, having been a ham strung the last few years on the recruiting trail With all the speculation that he would be fired he was forced to go to JUCO route and then Covid hit taking away some of the better players.

People seem to forget this is Northern Illinois. There are no glory days. A very few Blips of success in The record book. John McDougall-the all-time winningest coach who is under 500 for his career, Molinary who won with Jim Roseborough’s players and jumped at the chance to get out of Dekalb: after two seasons are looked at as the standard. Brian Hamel had a brief run of two good years with TJ lux and a tournament appearance but was also well under 500 for his career. Except for Molinari the only NIU coach in the last Half century to have a winning record was Tom Jorgensen. 2019-20, Monty’s last full year, The Huskies were 18-13 and tied for the Western Conference championship. Those accomplishments which many see as meager are actually highlights in Huskie history as only a Handful of NIU teams have won 18+ games in a season
and there have been very few championships or co—championships for NIU in basketball history.

So what your saying is we have never been a basketball powerhouse

Great contribution to the discussion. Talk to text autocorrect is an innovative invention but not perfect. WTF difference does it make? Must be fun being the spelling, Grammar and linguistics police

Despite your incorrect spelling of your names, I was able to decipher your message. And you're absolutely right, NIU has historically never been a basketball school. We've had limited success throughout the years, and hopefully Burno is someone who can finally change our culture and place in Basketball.

I will fight you and agree with Big Red, that Patton set us back a decade. We went from a mediocre team, to an awful team under his command. Most notably, we also lost access to any Chicago Public School because of him.

Montgomery was light years ahead, but he only took us from awful back to mediocre. I thank him for that. We still broke the record for lowest points scored in a half of bball twice under him.

RE: Burno vs. Montgomery Day 1 - dc1 - 03-11-2021 01:27 PM

Sorry but last in the MAC when Monty took over and last in the MAC when Burno takes over is last in the MAC! Actually attendance was probably better when Monty took over than it was in 2019-20 season
