"I hope when people look back on historic events in Rice Stadium they’ll include 1954 Cotton Bowl (incl famous tackle of Dicky Maegle by sideline player), 1962 Kennedy moon speech, 1974 Super Bowl, 1994 victory over UT & the 2021 Commencement Ceremonies (incl class of 2020)!"

Which one doesn't belong? Which one of these things is not like the other?

There are a lot differences in these five things.

Well the Kennedy speech was not an athletic event...

Two of them involve Rice athletic victories. Three do not.

The 1954 Cotton Bowl was not held at Rice Stadium.

By far the least noteworthy is the last one.

But I guess we can give Leebron some leeway for hyperbole.

I don't know what's sadder - the fact that Leebron thinks the 1954 Cotton Bowl was held at Rice Stadium, or the fact that no one bothered correcting his tweet in approximately half a day.

And to think that the Cotton Bowl would be played at HRS and NOT the Cotton Bowl.

Yea, that would be like the 2021 Rose Bowl not being played in the Rose Bowl....oh, wait.

Or the 1942 Rose Bowl not being played in the Rose Bowl.

RE: Karlgaard / AD Thread - Owl Is In Chains - 05-16-2021 12:40 PM

FWIW, the Cotton Bowl is no longer played in the Cotton Bowl. It moved to Jerry's place.

RE: Karlgaard / AD Thread - Uncle Benjamin - 05-16-2021 12:41 PM

The Cotton Bowl has not been played in the Cotton Bowl since 2009.

I'll worry about where it is played when we are in it.

Maybe is time for Lebron to retire. Not just because of acceptance of failure in our revenue sports which is not accepted in the academic side of the University. Programs either have to improve or be eliminated. As an alum I am tired of just being a source of donations. How about some input into the culture of the University such as having non leftist points of view? Virtual has not been enough to keep me involved with the University. This statement is not the only thing no one cares about. I hear more about A&M (graduate school) and UH (Law School) than I do about Rice. Pede is doing a good job at UH alum relations. A&M managed to retire their President and get someone more active.

If you honestly hear more about A&M or UH, you're just not trying. I get e-mails or social media posts about what's going on all across campus on a daily basis. Yes, daily. All you have to do is show an interest and put your name on one or multiple of the many mailing lists.

Sam Houston State just won the FCS national title, 23-21 over South Dakota State in the championship game.

This is KC Keeler's second FCS national championship (he also won one at Delaware, and got to the championship game 2 other times). He was high on my short list when Bailiff was fired, and would be high on my short list if we terminate Bloomgren. He didn't have a Texas background when Sam hired him, but he has learned how to recruit Texas.

To those who might say that hiring Bailiff was a mistake and another FCS coach would be a mistake, I would say there are three big differences, 1) Keeler has won the national championship twice, gotten to the championship game 2 more times, and now won more 1-AA/FCS playoff games than any other coach (the win today passes Jim Tressel), 2) Keeler has 27 years as a head coach, not 3 like Bailiff had, and 3) Keeler's teams have sustained (3 losing seasons out of 27 as HC, as opposed to 2 out of 3 for Bailiff when we hired him).

Recruiting at Sam Houston vs Rice is as different as night and day.

Absolutely.

But recruiting anywhere is about contacts and relationships. You recruit Texas for a few years and you develop contacts. You have people who will return your phone calls. And that's what you need to get a favorable audience with the kinds of kids who go to Sam or the kinds of kids who go to Rice. If the Texas HS coaches trust you, their kids will think positively of you. If the coaches don't, the kids won't.

Matt Rhule realized when he got to Baylor that he was an outsider and he understood that dynamic. So right off the bat he went out and hired the past president of the THSCA and a very successful 5-A coach, to give him the Texas credibility he needed. It worked.

Bobby Williams's name has been floated as a replacement, should Joe leave or be terminated. I'm pretty sure he has no interest--he has a better deal at Sam--but if he did come, I would expect KC to follow pretty soon thereafter.

East mistake to make, Cotton Bowl and Rice Stadium both used to have that signature Gray turf.
