STR: New basketball league for 16-18 year olds will pay at least $100k/year - Alanda - 03-07-2021 10:51 PM

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/04/overtime-basketball-league-that-pays-16-18-year-olds-100000-nba-.html

Quote:Overtime announced on Thursday that it plans to start a basketball league for 16-to-18-year-olds allowing them to earn at least $100,000 per year.

The Overtime Elite league will let players bypass traditional high school and collegiate levels while building their brand before becoming eligible for the NBA. It will start in September with 30 players, and will be based in a single location, which is still under discussion.

There's more info in the article if you are interested. I found this from a different article talking about the NBA commissioner's support for the new league. Looks like recruiting is about to change sooner than expected.

It is not clear how this league will be funded .

Why doesn’t the NBA simply fund youth academies like European soccer teams?

Why doesn't the NCAA stop lording it over certain colleges pay its student athletes...

Doesn't seem much like a "league" with just 30 players??

This is going to end badly for a bunch of kids.

You build your brand by playing NCAA basketball. Not by doing drills and scrimmaging with 30 players all year. None of the kids that skipped school this year are building their brand. They are in the basketball equivalent of the witness protection program.

Leaving school worked out ok for Wiseman. But he was a true top pick.

one of a kind

the ncaa brings the marketing and exposure opportunities to the table. you can grow your game in a lot of different ways, but if you are elite and want that big shoe deal with your rookie contract, then you need the marketing opportunities that the ncaa provides through march madness and the national games.

that is the part these kids would miss out on, they would be making it more difficult to impress the shoe companies and other endorsement entities by going this route. the nba will scout the players, but now the endorsement deals would take more effort to put together.

For most of those who don't eventually make it professionally, they will have lost their amateur status to play college ball & get a degree - that's the "end badly" part. If, a big if, the league provides the education they tout to teach these kids the economics of life, it will be good for some but most will be extremely ill equipped to manage even a $100K & they will be preyed upon by those around them.

They will make $100,000 for one year, and if they don't make it in the pros they will have forfeited a $150,000 - $200,000 free education.

I read about a similar plan to this a few years ago with HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). They article suggest that they leave the NCAA since they really don't get much support from them anyway. Then, they would form a semi pro league, since a lot of HBCUs are either in or near a major city. They would go after the 1 and dones of the world. Pay anyone that plays a salary in line with what they are paying in Europe, let them go to college for free, and if the NBA calls, they can leave and come back if they need to. Sounded like a good plan, but no one would finance it.

Yep

Getting exposed in college isn't terrible for a kid...

Getting exposed in a league where you are making 50k means you have to learn another skill with no options of any type of scholarship.

@macgar The minimum is $100k.

It will definitely be interesting to see how it goes if it gets off the ground. Going back before corona was a problem, we see that LaMelo Ball and RJ Hamptom skipped college and even without the exposure there they were still first round picks. And LaMelo looks like he will be rookie of the year. Shoe companies would have already known about these kids. We've seen that for years with the money they put into AAU, their own high school leagues, and the "alleged" under the table deals with coaches and players.

Sounds like a lot of politics (governmental and non-governmental) would have been involved to make that work. Probably another headache other than financing it.

(03-08-2021 08:20 AM)Marc Mensa Wrote:  Why doesn’t the NBA simply fund youth academies like European soccer teams?

Because they would lose money. European soccer clubs get paid money called transfer fees when their academy players go to other clubs- you cannot do that here with players under 18.

When a top is player leaves a soccer academy for Europe the club does not get a windfall like a European academy would when their top player left-

In the US, Baseball has an antitrust exemption that is granted by congress that’s why they can run a minor league system
