Friday 8:00 and Saturday 5:00 in Bowling Green: WKU (17-5, 10-2 CUSA). CBSSN on Facebook

Results to date: N Iowa (93-87); Memphis (75-69); W Va (64-78); Louisville (54-75); Miss Valley St (96-69); Gardner-Webb (86-84); URI (68-65); Alabama (73-71); Tenn Tech (88-68); Charlotte (67-63); Charlotte (71-75 OT); La Tech (66-64); La Tech (58-63); Marshall (81-73); Marshall (69-67); MTSU (82-67); MTSU (68-52); Rice (77-71); Rice (89-66); Houston (57-81); FIU (91-58); FIU (71-59).

Last game: WKU slept through the first half, trailing 28-33 @HT. FIU still led 43-41 with 16:44 to go, but WKU went on a 21-2 run featuring 10 straight pts from Tavion Hollingsworth and cruised to a 71-59 victory. Charles Bassey was in beast mode- 22 pts (9-13 FG, 4-4 FT), 13 RBs and 5 blocks. Tavion Hollingsworth had 20 pts (9-14 FG, 1-2 3s) and Jacob Rawls added 14 (5-13 FG, 4-10 3s).

CUSA stats : 74.2 pts (vs 64.8); .477 FG (.379 3s); .789 FT; +8.7 RB; A/TO= 0.84

G Jordan Rawls (6-1 180 So). 22.9 min.; .358 FG (12-38 3s); .633 FT; 1.9 RB; 7.3 pts
G Tavion Hollingsworth (6-2 165 Sr). 32.3 min.; .420 FG (11-28 3s); .892 FT; 4.5 RB; 13.8 pts

G Luke Frampton (6-5 200 Jr). 19.1 min.; .426 FG (21-50 3s); .600 FT; 1.4 RB; 7.0 pts

Starter Josh Anderson DNP vs FIU (ankle). Luke Frampton DNP last 3 games (undisclosed reason).

WKU makes shots (#1 CUSA 3%, #2 FG%). When they don’t make shots, they draw fouls then make FTs (#1 FT%, made more FTs than opponents attempted). They defend well (#2 FG%-defense, #2 3% defense), rebound well (#1 RB margin) and block shots (#1 CUSA).

It all starts with Bassey: Kareem Abdul-Jabar COY finalist, Lute Olsen POY watch list, Naismith DPOY semi-finalist. 5X CUSA POW. #1 CUSA RBs/g, blocks/g; #2 FG%; #3 pts/g. However, Anderson and Hollingsworth keep the defense honest and get defenders in foul trouble.

They do turn the ball over (#12 CUSA) and if Frampton and Anderson DNP, they are not deep.

So, even if we beat them... no chance at the bye?

I don't think that's right.

My understanding is that 1 & 2 seeds in each division get a bye. Since all teams are now included, there are play-in games so it’s more like a double bye. If we win both games against WKU, we are the 1 seed. If we split, we are the 2 seed. If we lose both it will depend on what Marshall does against Charlotte at home. So probably 3 seed.

Oh roger that! I didnt realize we're doing back-to-back games with WKU.

Party On, Wayne... Party On, Garth!

Hollingsworth is fantastic. He was Kentucky Mr Basketball as a senior in high school I do believe. He’s been in the starting lineup his entire career. Great player on some talented teams. I know they are anxious to snap their NCAA drought. They should honestly be an at large team if they don’t win, but they’ll end up going with a 10th Big Ten team instead. It’s a joke but that’s the world we live in.

RE: WKU weekend - MonarchManiac - 03-03-2021 09:19 AM

Need to split. Double bye is crucial.

RE: WKU weekend - DaBigBlue - 03-03-2021 10:09 AM

Win one we get a bye.

RE: WKU weekend - Gilesfan - 03-03-2021 10:45 AM

If Hollingsworth ever learned to shoot, he would be an All CUSA player. He's just never gotten over the pretty solid player pedestal.

Which got me looking at who deserves all CUSA consideration (not who will get bc Hollingsworth will be thrown in)

Bassey should the POY by a landslide.

I didn't realize Jaylin Ingram has played so well. But, I guess when you play 100 college basketball games, you become very good.

Win shares per 40 minutes? Man, you got some wild stats.

He might be because their selections are generally awful. But Hamlet has played much worse than last year. A big time regression.

I mean, I've watched him play a few times. I checked his stats, his shooting percentages dropped a bit but not POY to not making 1st team drop off.

He's better than any player on our team and most of the players we've played against. Not Kinsey but definitely Lovan.

RE: WKU weekend - Gilesfan - 03-03-2021 11:49 AM

Who cares if he is or isnt better than any player on our roster, that wasn't even in the discussion?

His FG% didn't just drop off a touch, it went down 60 basis points. He's shooting 70% less from 2s and 30% less from 3s. He's rebounding less, getting less assists, getting less steals, getting less bocks, and committing more fouls.

Other than that, he's been fine.

The reason Ingram (for example) has better advanced statistical numbers:

Per 100 possessions:

Hamlet- 43%, 27 points, 5.5 reb, 7.8 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.0 blocks, 4.4 turnovers
Ingram- 46%, 32 points, 13.7 reb, 4.3 assists, 2.2 steal, 1.1 blocks, 3.3 turnovers

Yeah, still a damn good player. If NT had played FAU's schedule I bet his stats would have been more your speed.
