Now that the Tritons are fully D1, the Banana Slugs are on the clock to get their facilities up to Big West standards.

Just kidding...

In the competition between UC and Cal State systems for dominance of the Big West Conference, UC is running out of candidates if the Big West needs to expand. UCSC could be their best hope.

+1

UC Riverside just needs to give their spot to the Banana Slugs already.

I remember getting Eastbay magazine as a young’n in the 90’s and they had a Banana Slugs t-shirt. Also the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello. Weird the things we remember.

In retrospect, I think it’s hilarious I thought I had a “periodical”.

yes, I'm sure the athletic department that's only a couple years removed from barely winning a referendum to continue existing is on its way to Division I any minute now.

UC Santa Cruz is like UC San Diego was from the early 1960s until the 2000-2001 season...content primarily competing as a member of NCAA Division III...so UC Santa Cruz athletics is about 60 years behind UC San Diego athletics...

at best...i can see UC Santa Cruz going to Division II to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and take UCSDs place there with the CSU schools...

in fact...UCSC had two referendums...one in 2016 to see whether or not the students would approve an increase in student fees which would be necessary to maintain the athletic program...one in 2017 for students to approve Measure 68, the Intercollegiate Athletics and Athletics Activities Access Fee, a new fee of $38.50 per student per quarter...both referendums were passed by the UCSC students...

IMO, administrators at most UC campuses likely tamp-down athletics. It’s students and alumni that likely are forcing these UC administrators to upgrade the competition level (putting a focus on school spirit rather than academics). UCSD could have been successful at the D1 level a long time ago. A large and wealthy public university in the most idyllic location, with outstanding academics. Most universities struggle to attract elite students; they use athletics to differentiate and brand the potential students’ experience. The challenge for UC schools has been to keep up with the demand for higher education to very elite California students.

For perspective, Liberty University was founded in the early 1970s, and started competing in NCAA D1 by the late 1980s. It’s not surprising that UCSC students voted in favor of the nominal “Access Fee”. If the UC schools ever struggle for enrollment, then they could start investing more in athletics.

agreed...using UCSD as an example...the academic elitist at UCSD believed that UCSD was on the same level as the ivy league schools...in addition should be compared to UC Berkeley & UCLA within the UC system...but we're thinking small minded when it came to athletics...they did not want to acknowledge that those institutions that they wanted be compared to academically were all D1 schools...both UC Berkeley & UCLA are even big time D1 athletic schools...they thought that athletics would detract from the academic reputation/environment of UCSD...but D1 athletics has attracted students to UCSD...

it took UCSD...like UCSC...two referendums...one in 2012 to see whether or not the students would approve an increase in student fees which would be necessary to upgrade the athletic program to D1...the UCSD student body rejected an increase in activity fees to support the move to Division I...one in 2016 where students approved an increase in athletic fees by $480 per year and the transition UCSD athletics to Division I...

once the 2016 referendum was approved the by UCSD student body it behooved the UCSD faculty to follow suit otherwise they would further alienate the student body and add to the UCSD stigma of being known as University of California Socially Dead...they eventually approved later on that year...

Interesting about the UC Socially Dead reputation. By many academic metrics (faculty, research, student admission scores, applications, etc.), UCSD is on par with Berkeley and UCLA. Yet in terms of selectivity (admission rates), UCSD is not elite. It’s almost as if UCSD is the safety school for Berkeley and UCLA students...rather than a flagship campus. With a more well-rounded environment, UCSD could be the destination school.
