Not much information to go by here, but sounds like mom is a little salty.

I just texted a friend of mine that has a son that was a HS teammate of Kalin at Little Rock Christian and he says the mom used to come in and berate the coach for mistreatment. Sounds like she might be a tad off her rocker.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Having a child with autism requires a parent to be a fierce defender of that child. I’ll just say that.

The comment about them honoring his scholarship was interesting to me. So could he potentially give up basketball but finish out his degree and we'd be down one scholarship for the next two years?

Makes me think the timing of Smith transferring the same day Carry committed wasn't a coincidence. I assumed it was because Bennett had already left so a scholarship was open for the spring.

All scholarships are for one year. KB could leave the team, but stay in school and remain on scholarship. Smith left the team, and left school, opening up a scholarship. It's understood KB is still taking classes at Kent, perhaps on-line, but still on the books. Anything beyond this year would be on him, unless some other KSU department offered him a scholarship to stay. Or he paid his own way.

Interesting, I believe, after spending two years at KSU he could potentially be classified as a STATE student. Considering the good marketing pub he's generated for a lot of stuff away from hoops the university might/should consider keeping him around, if he is truly done with basketball.

Good luck at Morehouse...

Very Disappointed in reporter that wrote this story .
It’s based on a tweet later removed .

Why did Mom and Son wait a year to go public with accusations about professor?
Why wasn’t a formal complaint made with the University?
Should have been plenty of witnesses if facts are accurate .

As far as violating HIPPA by coach , also bizarre.
Coaches nationwide all violate HIPPA when they say a player is
out with an ankle sprain. For coaches to be in compliance, they
can only say a player is out with an undisclosed injury and that’s
not happening .

Attendance at game Saturday: He’s no longer on team since he went into
Portal and no fans are permitted.

I think Coaches and team have done a great job this year under difficult
Circumstances. They deserve our 110% support .

Hope this is not a distraction to the team and coaches as last 4 games hold
much promise.

GO FlASHES!!

Excellent observation. To go one step more, why didn't the editor/advisor ask for more detail. This is just another example of 'sensationalized journalism' that should be nipped in the bud at the JSchool level, not encouraged.

While it is clear KB is on the spectrum it is also clear, just from his rather prolific twitter account, that KB is well aware of what is happening in the world.

On the other hand, at a recent post-game press conference, Senderoff seemed aware that he needs to be more careful about complying with HPPA when discussing some injury and he said that maybe he had said too much already. I would think, though, that anytime a player has a health issue the coach would ask if he wanted to sign a HPPA waiver so that he can answer questions about a player's injury.

I was chuckling to myself thinking back to the Jim McDonald era. He would never have needed being taught about HPPA. Getting any information out of him about a player's status was a real chore.

JIM MCDONALD ... Let's just savor that memory for a moment. He was no fan of the 3-pointer. But he adapted to it quickly. ... Can you say Eric Glenn and/or Ric Blevins.

Thanks , agree with your comments. My objection was not with student paper but R/C writer who I highly respected before this article. Very
disappointed that paper chose to print an article based on a tweet with very few facts.

Remember you are dealing with USA Today not the Record Courier any more. The reporters might be the same but management isn’t.

Coach McDonald. He was a good coach and an even better person. Nice man. Yes, Cleveland, I remember those days fondly. McDonald's biggest "flaws" were that by the time the 1990s came around he was becoming too "old school" for the players of that time, and he wasn't a very good recruiter. He was too "button-down" to charm kids into committing and cared more than most about the quality of kids he sought, character and academics-wise. But he took over a program that was so-so, at best, and did a heck of a job. As an underdog, he lost 3 MAC tournament championship games by a combined 5 points.

I won't name names, but he had several players with 'baggage' on some of his best teams. But he saw in them a willingness to respond to his style of coaching, and in the process improve themselves on and off the court - at least while in school.

RE: Kalın Bennett / Accusations - - Muskrat - 02-25-2021 03:05 AM

Oh, I agree, Cleveland I didn't mean to imply that he only had players who were squeaky-clean scholars.

Good point. All about driving readership
Facts secondary.

I saw some of her tweets. She was mad that KSU didn’t feature her son on the poster for the inaugural autism awareness game last season. She recently tweeted this: “If my 6’11 son would have pushed Sis Mary Sharpe for touching him, searching him, patting him down. Where would this black man be right now? Your response SHE HAS TENURE?” I’m not sure what all of that means but she did tag a civil rights attorney in the tweet.
