Hawks lead this one 7-5 in the bottom of the 6th. It's been a battle of the bullpens, as both starters exited in the 3rd inning.

Jac Croom is 3-3 and Baldwin has driven in a pair of runs.

Hawks win, 9-5, to finish off the sweep!

Very, very impressive weekend against a team that expects to end up in a Regional.

There were so many standout performances this weekend:

* Brooks Baldwin: 5-15 (.333), 1 HR, 3 RBI
* Jac Croom: 5-12 (.417), 1 RBI
* Cole Weiss: 4-11 (.363), 1 RBI
* Kip Brandenburg: 3 RBI
* Cole/Cody Benton: 1 Win, 1 Save, 3 appearances, 3.1 innings, 4 K's, 1 BB (combined)
* Adam Smith: 1 Save, 3.1 innings, 3 K's, 0 BB's
* Luke Gesell: 1 Win, 5.0 innings, 1 ER, 3 H, 4 K's, 0 BB's
* Landen Roupp: 5.2 innings, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K's, 0 BB's
* Breydan Gorham: 2.1 innings, 3 K's, 0 BB's
* Bryce Cota: 2.0 innings, 1 K, 0 BB's

The Benton's combining for 3 appearances, a Win and a Save in the same weekend series was pretty cool.

Adam Smith going 3 and a third in dominant fashion to finish off the sweep was terrific as well. The bullpen was nearly perfect all weekend long.

Very solid opening weekend performance for Randy Hood and the Seahawks.

Randy Hood is undefeated in his 2nd year of coaching. Just sayin.

A few really good players didn’t play but they still had plenty to beat a good team.

Definitely agree with you. Would just like to add that VCU is more than just a "good" team. They're a very good program, that also has high expectations this year. To put the brooms on a team like that in the opening weekend is an incredible start, honestly.

Gesell and Croom named CAA Pitcher and Rookie of the Week!

https://uncwsports.com/news/2021/2/23/baseball-gesell-croom-honored-by-caa.aspx

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Luke Gesell and Jac Croom were named Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by the Colonial Athletic Association after UNCW opened its season with a sweep of visiting VCU last weekend.

Gesell picked up the series clinching win with five inning of three-hit, one-run baseball. He walked none and struck out four in picking up his fourth consecutive win dating back to last season. With the Seahawks leading 4-1 in the fourth inning, VCU loaded the bases with one out, but Gesell pitched out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.

Croom, meanwhile, hit a team-high .417 (5-12) with two doubles and five runs scored. He collected three hits in the series finale and scored three runs. He also drew three walks and posted a .533 on base average.

The Seahawks continue their 14-game homestand this weekend with three games against Western Carolina. The series begins on Friday with a 4 p.m. start. Saturday has been moved to 2 p.m. and the finale on Sunday will be a 1 p.m. first pitch.
