Gus Malzahn to UCF - mlb - 02-15-2021 10:19 AM

He's the next Tommy Tuberville of this conference.

Why does this feel like a mistake? I mean, UCF made its bones lately by elevating young coaches to dream jobs.

I don't think this is a Tuberville/Charlie Strong type situation. I think Malzahn is a really good coach who was in a really tough situation but still was pretty damn successful. Saban looms over that entire division and he's dealing with him in state. I just the Malzahn is a much better coach than those two guys.

So Cent. Fla. Is gonna hire the coach of the team they beat in their biggest win ever.

This checks out perfectly.

Top young coaches aren't going to flock to him either. Just like with Tubs.

And I'm not sure just how great of a recruiter he'll be after failing multiple times at P5 schools.

Not surprising given Terry Mohajir is the AD.

Funny thing is UCF now has a better coach than either Auburn or Tennessee.

Interesting hire.

I thought CJH was overrated but I admit I thought the same of CGM. We'll see.

FTR, I think Gus is better than Josh, but time will tell.

No idea how this will turn out, but I have to admit that this one made me LOL

On day 1, I feel better about Malzahn than I did with Heupel. I'm not loving this announcement but I'm more excited than the last announcement. So progress?

Gus is different then the other has beens that have been hired by this conference. He got fired because he can't beat Saban, the best college football coach ever. Gus has won regularly at Auburn and has had a few top 10 teams. This will turn out to be more Sampson the Holgerson IMO. Good hire UCF!

Well yeah maybe, but Saban worked out pretty good at Alabama.

RE: Gus Malzahn to UCF - ArmoredUpKnight - 02-15-2021 11:44 AM

Does he say Central Florida or UCF? In his peach bowl post game he congratulated Central Florida.‬

‪GUS MALZAHN: “First of all, like to congratulate Central Florida and Coach Frost, very good football team. They played very good today.”

I'd rather he just be Tuberville/Strong so we can fire him in two years and get back on track. More than like he's going to be a 9-4 coach that we won't fire but that won't get to the NY6. That's the worst possible outcome.

Saban had just won a national title at LSU before going to the NFL for a couple of years. That hire is in no way comparable to this.

Saban is exceptional - a near black swan. He defies his age with undiminished drive, supple adaptability, and hardy constitution.

Thats what Im thinking. Malzhan has 9 seasons as head coach. He is 77-38 and has never had a losing season. In 9 seasons as head coach, he has won 8 games or more all but one of those seasons. Sure, Dana Holgerson has been somewhat disappointing, but much of Dana's issue was being handed a program that Applewhite had allowed to decline to the point that it got whipped 70-14 in Applewhite's last bowl game....so the final conclusion on Dana's time in Houston will depend on how his rebuild turns out. Dana is winning some key recruiting battles and is taking a transfer portal heavy approach to his rebuild. So, Im not sure Dana is Tuberville just yet. Point is, I think Malzhan is not Tuberville and Im not even sure Dana is Tuberville just yet.
