You've got it listed as being at Freedom Hall. Pretty sure that's not accurate.

In his comments after the Wofford game, Coach Shay said he had simplified the defense; a move, he said, that required the players to make fewer decisions, and allowed for more individual accountability. It certainly seems to have worked, with the Bucs holding the Terriers below 50 points. Also, the referees allowed both teams to play a physical style. That likely benefited the Bucs much more than the Theatre majors from Spartanburg.

It will be interesting to see if those defensive changes will allow the Bucs to put the clamps on Chattanooga. The Mocs have won 4 straight (including, of course, defeating the Bucs in Johnson City). A loss would have both teams in a tie for fourth place in the SoCon, and the Mocs would have a lock on the tiebreaker by virtue of the head-to-head comparison.

So, a very big game for both teams tonight. One that could go a long way in determining who finishes in the top 4 and gets the all-important bye in the first round of the SoCon tournament.

Fixed.

The Bucs are in the middle of a 4 games in 8 days swing. The last one of those we tried was Feb 1 – Feb 8: we split 2-2 and then lost the next game coming up thereafter for a rough 2-3 stretch. Hopefully the Bucs are in better shape to handle this test. Wofford was certainly a good omen, but the Bucs have got to maintain that quality play.

Kenpom rates the last 5 games left on the schedule as close – 2 are one pointers (finale with UNCG and tonight at Chattanooga). One is a 2 pointer (at VMI). Mercer is 5 and at Samford is 8. In each of those games, Kenpom has ETSU as a small favorite. But they also figure that the probabilities say we’ll drop a couple of those games and finish 11-6. Let’s not let that happen!

In Chattanooga we get a team that is on a 4 game win streak, and is improving as they integrate the 2 transfers (6-7 Hankton and 6-6 Banks) that the blanket waiver gave them. They now have 5 starters as good as anyone in the SoCon:

6-4 205 Rs-So transfer from Wright St Malachi Smith is currently rated the 2nd best player in the SoCon by Kenpom, behind Storm Murphy. He’s got a combination of physicality and guard skills reminiscent of Hayden Brown or a bigger Mike Bothwell. And like Brown and Bothwell, he’s given us difficulty: last time was 18 points (1-2 from 3), 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. He repeatedly beat us driving to the basket.
In conference he’s 16.4 ppg, .444 from 3 with 1.7 makes, 7.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 2.8 turnovers

6-1 193 Sr David Jean-Baptiste lit us up from 3, scoring 18 points on 4-7 from 3, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.
In conference he’s 16.9 ppg on .452 from 3 with 2.8 makes, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals.

6-6 218 Senior transfer from JMU Darius Banks is a long smooth scoring swingman who hit us for 14 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal last time. He’s a tough defensive matchup for the Brewers. He scored over 1,000 points in only 3 years at JMU, and hasn’t lost a step in moving to the Mocs. He will hit a 3 if left open.
In conference he totals 12.8 ppg but only .158 from 3 with 0.4 makes and 4.8 rebounds.

6-9 223 Serbian Senior transfer from Cleveland St. is a genuine European stretch 4 with long arms and 3 point range. Last time was 6 points on 1-2 from 3, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block.
He usually does a little better in conference with 11 ppg on .371 from 3 with 1.1 makes and 3.7 rebounds.

6-7 217 Junior transfer from St. Louis KC Hankton got 6 points 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal last time, although he was off from 3 at 0-3. He’s a junk yard dog who scraps, fights, defends and rebounds. Kind of like Vonnie Patterson, with 3 more inches, 10 more pounds and a little better shooting touch. The addition of Hankton and Banks have brought this team to a level with the top 4 teams in the SoCon.
In conference he gets 9.9 ppg on .200 from 3 with 0.7 makes, and 4.7 rebounds. But he will take, and can make, a 3 if left open.

6-5 200 Rs-Jr transfer swingman from South Alabama A.J. Caldwell is another scrapper who’ll do a little of everything. His 3 (the only shot he made all game) beat us last time. But although he wasn’t scoring, he scrapped for 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.
In conference he gets 5.0 ppg on .341 from 3 with 1.3 makes, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 steals.

Two good role players, 6-5 Rs-Fr Jamaal Walker and 6-7 210 Gr-Tr also from South Alabama power forward Josh Ayeni (who missed the last game with the Bucs) fill out the box score.

Bucs need to come to the Roundhouse ready for a 40 minute alley fight. The Mocs have no huge guys, but really good overall size and athleticism. We had some physical matchups strongly in our favor versus Wofford that we won’t get against these guys. With 4 straight wins, including over the Bucs and Wofford, they are getting more and more confident. Kenpom had it a couple points in Chattanooga’s favor – then we beat Wofford and they changed their minds. The Bucs are now favored, but only by 1 point.

The Bucs have the potential to be favored against anybody else on our schedule. But we’ve got to bring the A game to win them. Go Bucs!

Poor start again

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - kevster - 02-15-2021 07:10 PM

You guys have been paying more attention than me. Someone is going to need to explain to me why we can’t hit a free-throw or a layup.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - BucDoctor - 02-15-2021 07:26 PM

Lethargic again. It’s hard to win on the road Jay.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - DaBuc Brass - 02-15-2021 07:50 PM

With the way we shot the ball, can't ask for a better situation. Need Sloan and Brewer to step up this half.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - etsuBucsFan1988 - 02-15-2021 08:23 PM

Adheke struggling, got to make those big guy.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - etsuBucsFan1988 - 02-15-2021 08:42 PM

Hard to believe as crappy as we are playing we are still in it.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - kevster - 02-15-2021 08:48 PM

Win or lose, this team lacks offensive focus. I have to wonder if they run any plays. Passing is sloppy. Shooting is just terrible. It seems like they don’t even try for the first ten minutes of a lot of games.

I’m hoping they mature by next season. It really does remind me of a Bartow offense.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - JWBUC - 02-15-2021 08:58 PM

Horrible

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - BucDoctor - 02-15-2021 08:58 PM

Ho him...

Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - Bucster - 02-15-2021 09:03 PM

This team can't play on the road. Can't see us winning at VMI. At Samford will be hard too.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - etsuBucsFan1988 - 02-15-2021 09:04 PM

Fitting way to end this one.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - DaBuc Brass - 02-15-2021 09:04 PM

I'm sick! What a rough way to lose.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - MTBuc - 02-15-2021 09:05 PM

It’s Shay’s birthday but he was the one giving out gifts.

RE: Official Game Thread: @ Chattanooga - bucfan81 - 02-15-2021 09:12 PM
