wilder's cantract - bluelight - 01-25-2021 06:57 PM

If Woodie keeps going, he could set a new record by keeping JJ 12 years! Beating Wilder's 11

RE: wilder's cantract - DaBigBlue - 01-25-2021 07:00 PM

What is your point, Wood didn't hire Bobby.

Yes but he didn't have the good sense to get rid of him until the damage was total.

I wasn't.

I was on board with BWs extension. Only problem with it was its length of extension was too long (and he evidently had one foot out the door anyway). I still cant believe we extended JJs contract. Thats the one that doesnt make any sense to me.

It's a Catch 22. You either extend a contract long enough for him to recruit, or you hamstring him.

RE: wilder's cantract - Monarchblue - 01-27-2021 10:04 AM

Yep. You can't really let contracts get below 4 years because kids will question (opposing coaches will help them question) whether or not the coach recruiting you will actually be there for your entire career.

So what do you do in a situation like with Jeff Jones, where its obvious he needs to go? Supposedly we don't want to buy out 4 years of him doing nothing, so we keep him around a few more years. But if we don't extend his contract it makes things even worse. Talk about being over a barrel.

That is why the best scenario, even though it costs buyout money, is to cut the cord immediately.

I was in the camp of agreeing with this idea about a couple of years ago. However, everything I've gathered, including with speaking with current D1 university admins & coaches, extending a coach's contract to prevent "hamstringing" them hasn't shown effective. With the current status of transfer rules, players have options to stay/leave at whim, so the long term play no longer exists. Yes, on paper, committing to a school where the coach is "secure" sounds nice, but the current data doesn't support that it's a significant factor in where people sign or not.

Jones can't/won't recruit. Given that, the length of his contract is moot.

I didn't know he had cataracts.

If you are committed to your program, you extend him or fire him before he gets inside 3-4 years.

Marshall just let Docs contract run out and they didn't have a problem recruiting for the last 3 years. I agree that it may have been a factor years ago but not as much anymore.

I'm no expert but that seems excessive. The contract for both Rahne and Jones are only 5 years. Do you need to resign every other year? You hardly ever hear of a contract running out so there's something to it but I think >2 years is probably OK.

That's probably fair. I thought JJ had a contract that rolled over every year to keep it at 4 or 5, but seems that is no longer the case, if it ever was.

Awkward deflection, but nice try. Not.
