I don't think we have the budget for compliance to keep Pitino in check. I don't want a dirty program... takes some luster off a program's accomplishments when they get scrubbed from the NCAA record books.

Agreed; Pitino's star has fallen and his best years are in the rear view mirror.

Too bad that in a thirteen year tenure, Mick never developed a single assistant coach who could be a capable successor.

He did develop (maybe) one, but then he touched a sleeping woman on a plane.

Nothing could have ignited this fanbase more than an inspired hiring of a young up and comer Larry Davis.

Hell, Savino wouldn’t have excited any of us either but at least we’d likely have a winning record right now.

Savino probably should have been the hire and we would be in a better spot the last two year and into the future based on continuity. Long term who know as we have basically in a win now era, especially where the roster turnover is ridiculous year to year.

This year most coaches are going to get a pass but my concern is that the next few years are “covid years” and that you have to adapt your recruiting, scheduling, and systems to meet these challenges.

Going forward I think we see these changes sticking around for a while.
1. Major restrictions on in person recruiting.
2. An absolute need to recruit the transfer market.
3. Schools re-recruiting their own players so they don’t leave.
4. An emphasis on local scheduling and reduced budget for basketball.
5. Limited attendance making way for smaller than normal crowds.
6. A massive reduction in home court winning percentage for schools like UC that basically won games on crowd alone.

Savino has been on Mick's staff for awhile and hasn't received any high major interest that I can remember. Brannen had a much better resume.

I still think Brannen skipped a step and probably needed to cut his teeth at level between UC and NKU before becoming a candidate for the UC job. Unless you feel that he deserves five years like Mick did. Maybe he does get that because of covid and the upheaval in college sports.

I think I would liked the hire more if he came from an A-10, C-USA, or Missouri Valley level job. If would have won at Marshall, WKU, St . Louis, or a Northern Iowa type program with an NCAA tournament win then the move to Cincinnati makes sense. NKU is two levels down from UC as its a high resource low major. Proving success at the mid-major level before moving to the high major level is ideal.

You really would have wanted a Cronin disciple? Come on. Had we wanted someone like Cronin we could have just kept him.

I thought Brannen did alright last year, and I think he's done a very good job getting talent into the program. This year has been awful, but there are extenuating circumstances, to say the least. I'm not looking to lock him up with lifetime contract or anything, but this Fire Brannen stuff is silly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- this team isn't as bad as some think it is.

Since we're (hopefully) about to get back to playing games later this week, here's a rundown of our schedule so far with the opposing team's current Kenpom ranking in parentheses:

Win vs. Lipscomb 67-55 (216) - This is the only team we've played ranked below #109, but still a decent low-major opponent
Loss vs. Xavier 69-77 (44) - Cincinnati led 62-61 with 6 minutes left
Win vs. Furman 78-73 (89)
Loss at Tennessee 56-65 (15) - Cincinnati led 53-51 with 6 minutes left
Loss vs. South Florida 71-74 (101) - Game was tied at 68 with 4 minutes left
Loss at Georgia 68-83 (91) - This was the only game we weren't competitive in
Loss at UCF 70-75 (109) - Bearcats trailed 70-71 with a minute left
Loss vs. Tulsa 66-70 (88) - Game was tied at 63 with a minute and a half left
Win at SMU 76-69 (57)
Loss at Wichita State 76-82 (79) - Game was back and forth until midway through the 2nd half

I'm afraid though that this 3-week layoff is going to torpedo any hope we had at seeing any major improvement the rest of the season, which is all I really wanted to see. Hope I'm wrong.

RE: Cincy MBB Cancellations - rath v2.0 - 02-02-2021 10:20 AM

Improvement? We had one game in 2 months that resembled improvement that we immediately followed up with more of the same kind of dreck. I’m holding out hope that Brannen put on his big ruby red shoes and helped them all find a brain, a heart and da noive during the 3 week pause for the cause.

My fear is that the staff and the players just want this season to hurry up and end. If so, this could be a 6 week root canal without Novocain.

I've always wanted to see Sam Martin get some run. Maybe he'll get his chance.

Are any players from the football team available?

seems like a lot of fans that hate Brannen and want him fired were doing the same thing back in 2007 - 2009. They constantly whined about him and when he started getting teams into the NCAA Tournament, they all jumped on the bandwagon and then hated Mick for leaving. It never changes at this university.

It's a disaster.

And transfer fallout because of it has got to be the betting favorite over retaining Eason, Harvey, etc. don't you think?

RE: Cincy MBB Cancellations - UCGrad1992 - 02-02-2021 10:02 PM

If we play Temple, and we lose, we're still not in last place in the division. That honor goes to the East Carolina Pirates [1-6]. If we beat Temple, then it's fuggin' gravy. At least that's how I'm trying to approach this season from hell.

Not necessarily. Losing certainly doesn’t help, but none of us really know what the locker room culture is like. I think this team could be pretty good next season if our key returners stay put, so hopefully the players are still bought in.

Every walk-on's dream. I hope whoever gets the chance to play makes the most of it. Not expecting a win, but we might learn a bit about this team's heart.
