Hawaii to play games on campus - johnintx - 01-11-2021 03:22 PM

It was discussed on an earlier thread, but Aloha Stadium in Honolulu has been deemed unusable for the University of Hawaii. The school has searched for options to play home games. They announced plans today to upgrade an on-campus stadium for temporary use.

The stadium currently seats just over 4,000, but they intend to expand it.

I have no clue how this is going to play out. The new Honolulu stadium can't happen fast enough.

Do they still use the track/field for olympic sports? Have the Rainbow Warriors ever played on campus? Is the lighting adequate or will they have to play only in the daytime?

Yes, the track is in active use by the women's track and field team (UH doesn't sponsor men's track and field). It was just upgraded in 2019 at a cost of $2 million.

The UH football team has never played on campus, however prior to Aloha Stadium's opening in 1975 the team's home games were held less than half a mile from campus, first at what is now Moiliili Park from 1909 to 1925 and then at the old 25,000-seat Honolulu Stadium (semi-affectionately known as the "Termite Palace") from 1926 to 1974.

The existing lighting should be adequate for night games.

Unfortunate they just did the track. They could have just moved in seats etc and just included some of it in upgrade the field/facilities for track if it hadn't been so recent, what have spread the cost out and added a benefit from a bad situation.

Not much they can do. It's a good solution until the new stadium is ready. I'm still surprised Hawaii has never considered independence. They could get games with the Big Sky, Mountain West & Pac-12. Plus, the location is a breeze to sign 1-and-1's I think.

There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of areas they can add significant seats.

The long travel makes it hard to have the team ready to play the following week. MWC coaches hate playing away games at UH for that specific reason.

Consequently after the first week of October an independent UH schedule would have to consist almost exclusively of FCS teams and other independents. Notre Dame ain't coming and a steady diet of BYU, New Mexico State, Liberty, UMass and Army wouldn't cut it with our fan base. Ticket sales and revenue would plummet.

We have rivalries with other schools in the MWC that go back as far as 1936. We've played Fresno State 53 times and San Jose State 43 times. We're right where we belong and damn happy about it.

Sure thing. Sorry if my reply seemed a little obnoxious. Independence comes up fairly frequently when UH is mentioned on the board and I've posted a version of that response many times over the years. But it's a fair question. 04-cheers

Add more bleachers on the side opposite the concrete stands, or replace what is there now with a larger set. Use temporary stands, either on wheels or easily disassembled, at the open end of the stadium. That could get capacity to 10,000 if it's about 4,000 as shown above.

Squeeze the student section between the endzones and track, maybe an extra 1k, 1.5k there. I also think you undersold the add on a bit, but even so not sure what is left once you squeeze in all you can 13k and that looks right with out some sort of more permanent additions (upper deck) or changes ( onto the track.

Oh, not at all. Actually helped me understand that more. I know I've made the Indy statement on other boards too. It seems like a logical move but yeah the travel alone is killer. Hawaii in the Big West is a great fit too I think.

I'm curious about something...

If Hawaii has the space on campus then why not build the new stadium on campus? This site looks like a really nice location for an FBS sized stadium.

This particular structure obviously needs more seating, but it seems like a project worth doing.

Also, I have fond memories of UH. Bama went out for 2 games in 2002 and 2003. I was unable to make the trip, but it was a great thing. Hawaii made the return trip in 2006 I believe. I remember watching that game on PPV(how times have changed...lol) and the broadcast booth was split between an Alabama guy and a Hawaii guy. It was a fun series.

Perhaps if most of the indys were on the west coast independence would be a bit more feasible, but the additional distance to the east coast really kills it any chance.

Was it last year or the year before that Maine mens basketball went to Hawaii? It got coverage just for the distance of the trip alone. Said it was the longest trip for a regularly schedule game. And looking at the map, I don't see how anyone D1 will beat that record.
