Boy, i bet the Lsu boys are butt hurt. They were sure he'd never take that job over Lsu.

ND is opening the wallet which was shocking. We bowed out when Elko sweepstakes hit 2 million. Freeman got more than that (2.4-2.6?) and he will be hiring at least one replacement because our safety coach is off to Texas.

Great season by the way and I look forward to our game next year.

If that was the case he didn't save the Purdue coach's skin.

It will be interesting to watch. I believe Fickell is/was more instrumental in MF's success than many know.

I was always worried it was the other way around.

If that was the case, he didn't save the Purdue coach's skin.

But CLF didn't have Freeman when he struggled as the HC at OSU. It's hard to say who boosted who. I guess we'll find out.

How has it taken almost 5 hours for someone to suggest coach in waiting Kerry Coombs for the new DC position? We're obviously not on our A game today guys!

He probably wouldn't take a 50% pay cut.

how much more stability can you ask for in terms of conference realignment? all we've ever done in the past fifteen years is send coaches off unto greener pastures

Now we have to worry about Notre Dame sniping OUR recruits. Whodda ever thunk that?

Like I needed more reason to loathe the leprechauns. I hope we beat those a$$es like a rented mule next year.

I was excited but guarded about the 2022 class... There is just so much time and uncertainty between now-and-then. Who knows how this all plays out, but it is somewhat...typical...that even where Coaches and Coordinators do not actively solicit the kids they recruited at their previous post to change their affiliation, kids build their relationships with the guys who first recruited them.

I used to think that the NCAA needed a "code of ethics" like the Canon of Ethics the Bar Associations have: an attorney leaving a firm is not allowed to take clients or files with them to their new firm. But of course individual clients are free to retain attorneys at their own volition and this is pretty much the case with recruits as well.

But we watched as Dantonio took key pieces from UC. Brian Kelly's departure pretty much wiped out the 2010 and 2011 classes...a majority of those kids ending up committing to Notre Dame, even when they didn't ever get there or didn't pan out.

I can only hope that Freeman will encourage the kids he recruited and are already committed to UC for the 2021 class to remain here and would not put pressure on the 2022 class to de-commit. But I think that the 2022 class is now in the wind.

I do wonder where Fickell stand with Mick Mickens. Not sure if he is coordinator material yet, but i guess we'll see in the coming days.

That basically forces the HC job to be a top 25 job now you'd think, which is effectively what he wanted. Good for him, that's a hell of a pay raise, still sucks that we will never rbe able to compete with he big boys that ways.

Good article, but I read the $2.5M offer to be from LSU which fits some of the rumors. ND is private so we may not hear much about the actual amount but I'm sure it's way more than UC could offer regardless.

The 2021 kids are locked into their letters of intent. They can't flip without UC releasing them or they would lose a year of eligibility. Of course, they would be free to leave via the transfer portal after they get here-- and the way it is now they would not be penalized a year like they used to be due to rule changes.

Hansen is our inside guy and he states 2.5 million. We matched LSU, but supposedly exceeded the offer a bit.

RE: Freeman to the Irish - BearcatMan - 01-09-2021 04:34 PM

ND insiders are reporting that Freeman is expected to being in at least two new position coaches...if he takes Scruggs too...

Thanks. Don't know him - is he with 247?

I knew the folks in South Bend were getting worried about our rise. So not surprising.

Figured that might happen. Lea probably bringing some to Vandy.

Probably Scruggs and Eliano or Hirtschler getting the call up from AAA

Sounds more like Elston doesn't see a future there from what I'm reading...but he's the DL guy, so yeah, same difference.

RE: Freeman to the Irish - rath v2.0 - 01-09-2021 06:21 PM

ND’s safeties coach just went to Texas today, too.

RE: Freeman to the Irish - BearcatMan - 01-09-2021 06:26 PM

Welp...looks like we're going to lose our staff and recruits for '22. Sounds like a fun offseason for Fickell, going to guess this makes it easier for him to leave too.

This reminds me of the board when everyone was convinced he was going to Michigan state. Relax. We're in good hands and have a loaded team coming back.

RE: Freeman to the Irish - Bearhawkeye - 01-09-2021 06:32 PM

Yeah it sounds like Elston was the guy internally who'd become ND DC if they didn't get Freeman (or maybe someone else externally). I mentioned him before as I think he might be a nice DC for us but nobody else seems to be connecting us. But there are rumors that he may be headed to be DC at Purdue (read on).

Slightly relatedly, it's kind of amazing how far Bob Diaco seems to have fallen from grace. He won the Broyles award at ND after leaving UC with BK. After flaming out as HC at UConn he's gone to Nebraska, Oklahoma, Louisiana Tech and Purdue for one shot seasons with each. Now Purdue has announced he's not returning. Despite our success with a previous DC fired by Purdue, Diaco doesn't seem to be on the radar at all these days.

Diaco rode Manti Teo to that award, then he had to actually coach again and ended up showing his true colors. He is just an awful coach.
