If the Five new schools are added - CoastalVANDAL - 12-20-2020 07:36 PM

Could Oral Roberts be a target if a school leaves to get even numbers?
Basketball focused school with some good history in basketball.

If the WAC adds five FCS football schools as full members, the WAC will be at 14 schools. That's enough full membership for now. And, if any school leaves the WAC from this point on, that school will be replaced with a football playing school. No need to add non-football playing schools anymore; unless it's Gonzaga... that's joke.

Agreed.

Need to add football playing schools. That’s the priority to get to eight league games for this FCs league. Easiest thing would be if the two California schools become affiliates in football and you are there.

The fewer non football schools, the better!

You sir are correct. I would wager money that TAMUCC was offered WAC membership many times over the last 8 years. Probably Oral Roberts too. ORU is fine in the Summit, TAMUCC might wish they would have taken those WAC offers in a few weeks.

After the WAC hopefully adds the Texas Four and Southern Utah, if schools leave the WAC in the future, I think the following is the hierarchy of possible "attainable" replacement full member schools in the order of want...

1. Weber State
2. Sacramento State
3. West Texas A&M
4. Northern Arizona
5. Northern Colorado
6. Idaho
7. Portland State
8. Central Arkansas

Of course, this is just my opinion and up for debate by others.

I’d move Sac St to the bottom (6.5+ hours from CBU, Hornets Nest is worst gym in D1) but otherwise a good list.

I put Sacramento State that high because of its enrollment size (31,181), stadium size (21,195), travel accessibility (large city location), and being a gateway school to possibly adding Cal Poly and UC Davis as football-only members to the WAC.

i'm kinda wondering what...
Metropolitan State University of Denver
Colorado Mesa University
University of Colorado-Colorado Springs
...are thinking now that the TX-4 + more are potentially joining the WAC...the CO schools could've been part of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)-4 to join the WAC with Dixie St...

Probably not even giving it a second thought. D1 isn’t for everyone and it shouldn’t be.

based on the list above the following are the "most likely" replacement full member schools if schools leave the WAC in the future...

1. West Texas A&M
2. Central Arkansas
3. Northern Colorado
4. Northern Arizona

based on
TX-4 + more dynamic from SLC...
D2 move up ready with TXA&M system support...
and
north-south BWC geographic dynamic with the emphasis on BWC southern schools and geographic proximity to WAC members...

I like these possibilities, with the exception of geographic outliers.

Mine would be-
1. Northern Arizona
2. Weber State
3. Northern Colorado
4. West Texas A&M (D2 move up)
5. U Cal Davis (Football Only)
6. Cal Poly ((Football Only)
7. Sacramento State

Texas A&M Corpus Christi is another school to watch should they merge with nearby TAMU Kingsville which already plays football.

Central Arkansas is likely to join the ASUN soon and play football in the Big South.

RE: If the Five new schools are added - CoastalVANDAL - 12-21-2020 08:15 AM

The possible A-Sun additions of JSU and EKU seems odd.
Leaving the OVC for the Atlantic sun why ?

It does seem like a grand plan to add two FBS conferences could be starting.
Or possibly something like adding some FBS independents in a scheduling alliance.
You can move up without a conference invite if you can prove you can schedule enough FBS games.

Something like Liberty, EKU, JSU, U Mass and U Conn to start with.
Hopefully adding YSU, Stony Brooke, Delaware and JMU eventually kind of thing.

I am not saying any of that is happening I just can't figure out why EKU and JSU would join the A-Sun.

None of the schools the ASUN has targeted make sense to me. I would have expected Central Arkansas to move to the OVC if they left the Southland.

My hunch is that in the short term more FBS teams will be moving down to FCS than the other way around owing to financial woes as a result of the COViD plague.

RE: If the Five new schools are added - PojoaquePosse - 12-21-2020 09:59 AM

So a 71 page realignment thread was not enough? We had to start another one to talk about future WAC additions after our future WAC additions (TX4/SUU) have been added?

RE: If the Five new schools are added - dancingNMSUaggie - 12-21-2020 10:37 AM

Just say no to Oral Roberts. I like that the WAC is showing what I hoped for, a trend to become a football conference again. I was told by someone in the athletic dept at NMSU that FBS football is the ultimate goal for WAC. IMO the Texas schools joining the WAC wouldn't be leaving a FCS conference they are in already to be in another FCS conference. FBS is probably the conference goal. This would be wonderful for NMSUs football program.

Still extremely long-term goal.

Yes, and two of those schools don't have football so they would be no help to the WAC.

I still believe there's some what of a "long game" with Texas A&M - Corpus Christi that turns into one of two things happening...

1) Jon Sharp gets his way finally and there's a merger of TAMU-CC and TAMU-Kingsville. Sharp has already tried making this happen once and now we're a few years into the merger of UT-Pan American and UT-Brownsville that has gone amazing. The new 'UTRGV' is more highly thought of than its predecessors. A 'merged' school (TAMU-CC/TAMU-K) that includes a Division I athletic program with football will join the WAC.

"We have an opportunity — and in my opinion the last opportunity — to produce an amazing university for the students of South Texas — and really, for all of Texas," Sharp said in 2016 (https://www.texastribune.org/2016/11/10/texas-m-system-may-merge-universities-kingsville-a/)

2) Texas A&M - Corpus Christi needs to wait some things out. We need to see what those things are, but presumably it means the WAC football equation needs to solve itself and/or one or more of the non football schools (namely Seattle and Chicago State) need to figure themselves out of the WAC in some form or fashion. Adding football schools is the priority for the time being and that needs to occur first and foremost.

Nope. Every WAC related thread has to include multiple posts about UT-Dallas and Azuza Pacific from people who don’t even watch WAC games or have a real interest in any of the teams.
