What fuels our rivalries? - sportprof101 - 12-18-2020 09:47 AM

This question of rivalry has been a fun debate and now we're adding data to the discussion.

With the help of message board members beginning in 2014, we—the students and professors of the Know Rivalry Project—began answering this question and others related to rivalry in NCAA Football. Please help us update and expand our results by taking 9 minutes to complete our newest survey:

https://umassamherst.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3FdJ8eN2EgFCfCB?grpID=1051&mbsrc=mb

Our previous results have been featured in numerous sports media outlets, as well as the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. You can view those results, links to media coverage, and learn more about us at our KnowRivalry.com website BUT we'd prefer you didn't until you completed the survey via the link above... we don't want to influence your opinions provided in the survey.

We use the Qualtrics online survey software for data collection. This academic research has been approved by two US universities' Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and it poses no risks to respondents. You'll find more information on the disclosure agreement that is required to start the survey. Thank you for helping us to include the Sun Belt Conference by participating and please share this with any other fans that may also help.

No need to spend money on a research project. I can answer in certain terms:

Fans' Familiarity
Schools' Proximity
Teams' Competitiveness

I don’t know if the survey is messed up, but did anyone else list your rivals and then get a bunch of questions on your thoughts on San Jose State’s fan base?

Unusually stupid stuff like running goalposts through opponent's bus window prior to a trip down the mountain in 30 degree weather and stomping on their post-game pizzas fuels rivalries.

RE: What fuels our rivalries? - stingingeagle - 12-18-2020 01:48 PM

GS did that? That's just too much.
Funniest rival stunt I've ever seen was in high school, a rival high school dumped 2 truckloads of horse manure at our main entrance. The dry heaving of folks removing that massive pile was epic. Other than that, there's no real reason to be an ass about it. No pun intended. If you're going to do something, it should be something good-natured and not so one sided with stupidity.

LOL, nah son. We used our goal posts as a battering ram against your school bus. I know the pizza thing is canon, but I don't remember seeing any food stomped on. I was in the group walking behind the rioters (lol) with the goal posts and watched it all unfold.

Oh yeah, that rings a bell. Dang man my memories of certain events have faded a lot over the years! I don't remember the pizza. The goalposts I do.

Pizza stomp did happen, during my tenure working with the GS team as a student manager, 1999-2003

Yeh I know it hapenned per my friends that stayed behind rather than march the goal posts to Duck Pond, but I just didn't see it. I would have been disappointed as a broke kid for the food waste.

Not only that but it's pizza. Between that and ramen noodles I don't think there were any affordable food groups then.

Our rivalry with UL is fueled by a lot of personal foul penalties...

Mine was about Iowa St. those were control questions to see how you felt against non rival schoolls, at least I assume that was the case.

But all of that kinda pales in the rivalry now developed between UL and captain chapstick and his band of dirty beach chickens.

Keep thinking that dear. We got rid of our dead weight.

What fuels the Troy/South rivalry? Mostly the admins saying it's a rivalry, gullible fans, and a stupid, ugly belt.

That sounds really familiar.
