Speedy Morris - MICHAELSPAPPY - 12-15-2020 01:36 PM

Watching all these basketball games on Youtube has been an absolute blast for me. I have learned a lot of history. For example, Speedy Morris of La Salle was a hoot! He was one of those colorful coaches who would go through the striptease routine if the game were a close one (first the coat, then the tie). Speedy had a championship pot belly and looked like anything but an athlete. He has to have been one of only a very few D1 coaches to have coached both the women's team (briefly) and then the men's team. He won 238 men's games, all of them at La Salle, the most in school history. After he was fired at La Salle, he went back into the high school coaching ranks and won 1000 games there. Parkinson's Disease finally forced him out of coaching.

When you are the winningest coach at one of the Big Five, you would assume that you would not have any trouble getting the attention of high school kids. But that is pretty remarkable in one sense, because the transition from college down to high school is not always one that can be made successfully.
