I know we've had the possible new names discussion before, but I'm still curious of which direction they are thinking.

Let's get some guesses out there.

My three:
Zion State
St George U
Pine Valley U

We already have a four page thread of Dixie State naming guesses, for everyone's viewing pleasure.

The winner of that thread was the suggestion to name it after the river through town. If they aligned the mascot too that would be even better.

Isn't there a chance they would have to change who plays the mascot every once and a while?

If they must make a change, St. George University or Zion University sound the classiest and avoid the directional school appellation.

Zion is too religious for a public school to name itself after.

The actual petition, basis of the recent vote to change, stated they wanted the name to be "St. George State University"

Ding, ding, ding. They better pick a name that will not cause problems later. I'd stay away from Zion.

And "Saint" George University isn't religious? "Zion" University would be taken from Zion National Park; which is fairly close to St. George, UT. A similar school landmark name such as Grand Canyon University.

Would they then change their nickname to the dragons.

That would be legendary

It doesn't bother me if they chose Zion but where do you think Zion NP got it's name? lol

Zion: Heaven; the heavenly city. ... Zion is heaven, a place devoted to God, Jerusalem, or the land of Israel. An example of Zion is a mountain near Jerusalem; Mount Zion.

Saint George they named the town after is George A Smith who once said

"We breathe the free air, we have the best looking men and handsomest women, and if [non-Mormons] envy us our position, well they may, for they are a poor, narrow-minded, pinch-backed race of men, who chain themselves down to the law of monogamy, and live all their days under the dominion of one wife. They ought to be ashamed of such conduct, and the still fouler channel which flows from their practices; and it is not to be wondered at that they should envy those who so much better understand the social relations."

Do we have many active DSU fans on the forum? I haven’t noticed any yet, but I could’ve easily missed a post. I’m just curious what actual fans and alumni think and what they’d want.

I had a buddy who went to Western Maryland years ago. A while back they changed to McDaniel College and he couldn’t stand it. Not at all recognizable. So yeah, that wasn’t a reaction to current political climate but still. A change can alter the identity of alumni. Will a Dixie grad ever really feel like a SGSU grad?

At my undergrad alma mater, we voted down a change from Middle Tennessee State to Univ of Middle Tennessee. And that’s hardly much of a change. Everyone calls it MTSU and UMT sounds way too much like UNT (a conference rival). I guess the Mean Green folks were okay with that change.

It’ll be interesting what they do.

There's a pretty big hint in President Williams' comment:

"As DSU begins implementing our new strategic plan, it is important the university's name is befitting of a polytechnic-focused institution and will help us recruit, maintain and graduate the best and brightest students."

My guess is they will follow the Cal Poly model (result: "Utah Polytechnic State University) or Virginia Tech model (result: "Utah Polytechnic Institute and State University") and brand themselves as Utah Poly or Utah Tech for short.

Utah Tech has a nice ring to it. Or U-Tech, for short. I like it.

I think Zion University or Zion State University is doable. Heck, the name of Dixie State's stadium currently is Greater Zion Stadium.

Given the closeness of St. George to FLDS areas in Southern Utah/Arizona Strip and the Mormon history, I would think they'd want to avoid the term "Poly" at all costs...
