Could work, as long as Urban smokes a bowl a week with UT's Minister of Culture in order to keep the stress at bay

The rumor is running rampant on social media, and has been for the past several hours.

Would take a 15.4 million buyout after the contract extension a bit back. Ouchie.

I saw an article that tallied up the money the T-sips have shelled out in coaches in the last number of years.

2014 -- 3.25 million straight out buyout to Brown
2014 -- 4.4 million to Louisville for Strong; signed Strong for 5 mill for 5 years (i.e. through 2018)

2014 -- roughly 3 million to transition assistants, both in termination fees and in 'poaching fees' to Strong's assistants' employers.

2014 -- added app. 500k in assistant salaries to pool

Strong fired in Nov 2016 -- was paid the way through 2018

Herman hired -- 2.5 million buyout, salary just a tad over Strong's

2016 -- roughly 3 million to transition assistants away from Texas, and new assistants for Herman. Assistant pool to 2.1 million

2018 -- Herman pay to reportedly 5.8 million dollars;

end of 2018 -- final payment to Charlie Strong at full salary

2020 -- assistants pool currently at 6 million dollars.

Tea sips have thrown an enormous amount of bling into the fire. I count 25-27 million or so just in HC buyouts, assistant buyouts, and guaranteed salaries (Strong). 32 million in that time frame for 'real' HC salaries, and 25-27 million for 'real' assistant coach salaries. 75 million+ into the rabbit hole over 6 years.

If they pull the plug on Herman now, tack on another 15 million buyout, and another 5-6 million to buyout the assistants. If they do Meyer, add in 7 million for salary and at least 5 million for new assistants *and* another 2-3 million to buyout the assistants if contracted. That would run to total to 100 million and a little change or so for the time frame.

I think the Brown/Short/Herman buyout debacle will have made the AD a little gun shy about literally throwing 16 million into the garbage hole *just* for the buyouts to say goodbye to the pre-existing assistants, and say up to 19 million to wrench the others free.

My guess UT will sit for a year, and buy Herman out at 10 million instead of 15 million.

Pocket change compared to the amount of public capital incinerated by C-suite UT graduates in the E&P industry over the last couple of years. Yet their golden parachutes will likely be some of the dollars financing this buyout.

I agree with your conclusion though - if UT can't get Meyer, I'm not really sure who in the coaching market is going to be worth forking over money for. Additionally, UT is probably going to need to think about the dollars it will take to buy out Shaka Smart in MBB.

RE: OT-rumor from Austin - 75src - 11-30-2020 10:50 PM

Urban had to take a break from Florida because of stress and rested for at least a year before going to Ohio State. Maybe he will figure he is all right at Ohio State instead of the pressure of moving to Texas. UT needs to find a coach on the way up instead of a coach at another top 10 school.

RE: OT-rumor from Austin - SMUstang - 11-30-2020 10:51 PM

Texas is far and away the richest program in the country. If anybody can afford Meyer, they can. And Herman will land on his feet at another P5 school.

Even *if* they can get Meyer they are looking at 15 for Herman, 4 million or so (maybe more) for current assistants, and probably 3-5 million for buyouts to *get* Meyer the assistants he wants.

Thats 24 million right out of the gate *right now*. I dont see how they could afford any buyouts of any established coaches right now in addition to that really rich 'see ya, have a nice life' payout to sweep out the old.

Short took em for a hard ride, this would be even costlier than that one.

Have to say UT beats no one with the 'ongoing payments to people they have swept out of football coach positions' over the last 7 years. Herman would make their stranglehold on that position an empire lock if it does happen that way.

Indeed! I keep telling them that I would be happy to not coach for FAR less then they're paying those other guys.

While the offer to not coach hasn't come through yet, I'm keeping that door open.

Ummmm, you know Meyer isn't coaching at Ohio State right now, right?

If it does come through, please consider me for an assistant not-coaching position.

Urban wants the UT job in part because he feels Mensa got to much credit for OSU’s success while Mensa was OC.

And, of course, there is the zillion dollars UT will pay him to coach, and then not coach. 05-stirthepot

I really dont see them firing Herman. I bet they keep him one more year and if does not work out, they will clean house next year including the AD.

I have serious doubts that they will toss Del Conte, no matter what or when they decide about Herman.

Yeah, Del Conte got a contract extension last year through 2027. He's not going anywhere. That said, I won't be surprised if Herman is retained for next year - Del Conte can't afford to screw up his first football coach hire by making a reach hire (like Cristobal at Oregon, etc.). I honestly don't know who wants to deal with the absurd expectations that UT has.

Looks like UT is going to miss out on both Saban and Meyer...

"Del Conte holds a firm belief that the athletic director should not be commenting about a coach or a coach’s status until after the team’s season is complete. He declined to comment again Monday."

How soon ye have forgotten. His name is "CDC."
