Maggie Peterson passed away on May 15th in Colorado at the age of 81 and took with her charm, beauty, and sweetness which made my younger years happy. She is known to you as Charlene Darling from the Andy Griffith Show. I loved her folk music and boundless energy in that role! Thank you Maggie!

Robert 'Bud' McFarlane was an unsung hero in America’s Cold War victory over Russia--President Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot. But he didn’t do it alone. McFarlane, who died at 84 years of age, played a crucial role.

Colin Cantwell (1932 – May 21, 2022) was an American concept artist and director known for his work on films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and WarGames, but primarily for developing a number of the iconic Star Wars vehicles.

Quote:While employed by NASA Cantwell was in the CBS News studio for the Apollo 11 moon landing assisting Walter Cronkite as he narrated the landing.

In the early seventies Cantwell was employed by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center to produce effects for, and direct, an early multimedia presentation titled Voyage to the Outer Planets (1973) that would show a spacecraft touring the outer planets of the solar system.

Having previously been employed to work on visual effects for Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey with Douglas Trumbull, in 1974 Cantwell was hired to work on the original Star Wars film. Based on Lucas' directions he created the original designs and concept models for a number of vehicles including the X-wing fighter, the Y-wing, the TIE fighter, the Star Destroyer, the Death Star, the Tantive IV (which was originally intended to be the Millennium Falcon), the landspeeder and the sandcrawler. Cantwell's original designs were further developed by concept artists like Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston. One of Cantwell's concept models was used in the film, with Luke playing with it as he talks to C-3PO. One of Cantwell's original Star Destroyer designs was further developed for the 2018 Solo: A Star Wars Story but ultimately unused although Hot Toys did release a toy version.

Cantwell consulted with Hewlett-Packard on the development of their Hewlett-Packard 9845C desktop computers which were designed for graphical tasks, also creating a demo package to show off its capabilities. He then used HP 9845C desktop computers to design and create the computer graphics for the large displays in the NORAD set on the 1983 WarGames film.

Cantwell died on May 21, 2022, at his home in Colorado, according to his partner Sierra Dall.Dall had reported that Cantwell had been afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease in the final years of his life.

Depeche Mode's Andrew Fletcher dies, aged 60

Quote:"Fletch" was one of the founder members of the British electronic pop act.

Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher, one of the founding members of Depeche Mode, has died aged 60. Rolling Stone has confirmed that he died of natural causes.

The band broke the news on social media on Thursday evening (May 26th), saying: "We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member and bandmate Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher."

Fletch helped form Depeche Mode in 1980 in Basildon, Essex with Vince Clarke, who would later leave to become one half of Erasure. Together with bandmates Dave Gahan and Martin L. Gore, Fletcher as Depeche Mode was inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame in 2020.

The musician has appeared on all of Depeche Mode's fourteen studio albums, including Black Celebration (1986), Music For The Masses (1987) and Violator (1990). The band has had 14 top ten studio albums in the UK, and international chart success with songs including "Enjoy The Silence", "Personal Jesus" and "Just Can’t Get Enough". He also enjoyed a successful DJing career and launched his own label, Toast Hawaii, in 2002.

Fletcher is survived by his wife Grainne and their two children.

Quote:With the band having not always employed a full-time manager, Fletcher handled many of the band's business, legal, and other non-musical interests over the years.

He was also said to be the member who was "the tiebreaker" and the one that "brings the band together". According to interviews, Fletcher built the compromise between Gahan and Gore that settled their serious dispute following 2001's Exciter album and tour over future songwriting duties within Depeche Mode. In the studio and during live shows, Fletcher contributed a variety of supporting synthesizer parts, including bass parts, pads, strings and drone sounds, and various samples.

However, he was notably the only member of Depeche Mode who did not sing. Although he can be seen singing in videos of Depeche's past live performances, usually Fletcher's vocals were either mixed very low or heard only through his own stage monitors. Fletcher was renowned for his skill at chess. Neil Arthur of Blancmange has mentioned in interviews "never winning a game of chess with Andy Fletcher!" According to sources, in later years, "Fletcher's deepening depression resulted, in the summer of 1994, in a full nervous breakdown."

"Personal Jesus" was a song about Elvis Presley, told from the perspective of Priscilla Presley. Since Johnny Cash knew Elvis "personally", it's especially appropriate that he covered the song.
