West Div Technicality: UAB needs game next week - blazr - 11-26-2020 06:12 AM

After USM canceled our game Friday, we only have 1 conf game left: @Rice 12/12. That puts us at 4 w/ 5 being the minimum to qualify for West Division title. Our AD is supposed to be working with CUSA offices. Looks like our options are UTSA (would be a rematch), WKU (another rematch), or MTSU. If we beat Rice on the 12th, we would be at 3-1...the only 1-loss team in the West.

I really hope a school steps up or CUSA can shuffle some things around.

If anyone didn't put an asterisk on this season before it began then they're not paying attention. But I don't think anyone wants a team denied the chance to win a title due to COVID-related cancellations. Am I right? Maybe some of you do. I don't think any UAB fans would want a West title, either, having just played 4 games.

Yeah, I was going to ask how is the West shaking out with time breakers and such.

If I were UAB, I would really want that UTSA game, because they're in play for the division as well. If UTSA beats UNT this weekend, they are 5-2 and probably in the driver's seat for the West division.

I don't know how La Tech is positioned either. It's all very close.

I remember UAB fans didn't want to play Marshall when they were in this situation a month ago.

UAB had two chances to play Marshall, they actually could have played us this week.

We didn’t mind playing Marshall...but we aren’t the decision makers. As I understand, the hang up was the location. We had to have a home game for budget reasons and Marshall was in the same spot. It was early in the season - we were both replacing ODU I’m pretty sure. Have no idea how discussions went behind closed doors.

We had a game scheduled this week from before the season started. USM was always on our slate for this weekend.

I hope UAB can pick up another game. I'd love for UNT to play y'all. More football is more football. Right now, UAB has played one more game than we have, so we need games too. Best of luck.

Your budget never includes a 5th home conference game and that's what you were looking for at that time. You got greedy and I hope it bites you in the ass.

You were replacing an away game to ODU and they were replacing a home game. You tried to force them into giving you the home game. If you aren't eligible then you earned it.

If UTSA beats UNT this weekend, we would be 5-2, the only 5-win team in the West. Tit for tat. I would love to have another shot at UAB now that we're more healthy again at the QB position. The question would be where it would be played... at UAB again, at our Alamodome, or at a neutral site (which would virtually guarantee an almost empty stadium).

At any rate, I think we all knew from the outset that this was probably gonna be an effed up season, with all sorts of twists and turns, including the conference championship scenarios. Given that we had 7 wins in the last two years combined, I'm happy just to see us in the position we're in to begin with, especially with all the injuries we sustained by playing 8 games without a bye.

Not gonna lie when I say that it would be a bit of a downer if we're snubbed for a division title due to a COVID-related, end-of-season numbers game. It would far more upsetting to me if we lose to UNT, finish 6-5, and get snubbed for a bowl with an above .500 record for the 2nd time in 4 years though. So whatever ends up happening with this weird scenario, IF we beat UNT to go 7-4 (5-2), I think we're basically guaranteed a bowl and I'd be cool with that, regardless of whether or not we have a shot for a West title.

RE: West Div Technicality: UAB needs game next week - ATTALLABLAZE - 11-26-2020 03:29 PM

We have to replace two home games (USM & UNT) and two road games. (ODU & UTEP). Don’t see how playing another home game to replace one of the two we lost should be an an issue. I’d love to make them all up but we won’t.

This is the kind of stuff that drives the animosity between our schools. Don't think for a second North Texas wouldn't like to repay UTSA for costing us that western division title back in 2013. 03-hissyfit

Plus, as crazy as it sounds, UNT sill has an outside shot at this year's western division title. But, North Texas can't lose or miss another game on our schedule. Due to both programs having so much to play for, I expect a very hard fought game Saturday. 04-cheers

Marshall should play at UAB on Dec 5 instead of playing Rice. That would give both schools equal number of home and away conference games. That opens up Dec 5 for Rice and UTSA to make up their game.

UAB had their chance. We aren’t going to trade a home game for a road game. That makes zero sense.

???

That would give Marshall 2 home conference games and 4 road conference games.

If we were forced to do what you propose, our conference schedule would be....

@ WKU
@ La Tech
FAU
MTSU
@ UAB
@ FIU

RE: West Div Technicality: UAB needs game next week - rileylives - 11-26-2020 07:11 PM

I do feel bad for UAB.

However, if they did the right thing on the weekend of November 5th, and played @ Marshall, they wouldn't be in this mess.

Additional salt. If they actually beat us in Huntington, and continued to win out, they would have hosted the CUSA Championship.

RE: West Div Technicality: UAB needs game next week - FriscoDawg - 11-26-2020 07:39 PM

The conference office should have handled this better from the outset by making missed division games a higher priority than future cross-division games since the divisional format was maintained.

The conference office could have taken care of this week better as soon as the cancellations happened Monday.

Instead, as usual,....(crickets).

Maybe.

However, at least they did SOMETHING. when they scheduled those original 7 December games.

I expected nothing, and at least there's something additional on the table.

I stopped paying attention after that, because the floodgates of postponements was too much to track.

RE: West Div Technicality: UAB needs game next week - HERDDDDD - 11-26-2020 08:35 PM

So UAB has 1 game but needs 2, let’s assume they schedule one. if just ONE of UABs next two games are cancelled (which is very possible) then they don’t qualify for the CCG?

UTSA would win the west if they don’t lose.

LaTech still has an outside shot but needs one of UABs games to be cancelled or UAB to lose one game, and UTSA to lose a game. That’s kinda a long shot.

Is that basically the west race?
