Cultists gonna cult - CitrusUCF - 11-20-2020 12:58 PM

James Franklin threatened retaliation against a player if he reported a star player pulling a knife on him, and the lawsuit alleges that Penn State has a nasty hasting culture including players threatening to "Sandusky" players they are hazing.

Looks like those NCAA sanctions really fixed the culture at PSU*

RE: Cultists gonna cult - The Cutter of Bish - 11-20-2020 01:09 PM

The hazing culture was a known thing before this, and it was both odd and disappointing that something far less scandalous but still humiliating for the school with Chambers saw him carted off. Franklin and football get the green light. THAT part of PSU, where basketball is a second or third class citizen and football is king, that culture is still apparently alive and well.

You know, I think it's basically unfair calling Penn State's football culture a "cult" when there are so many other college football-obsessed towns out there.

But then again, there's something off about the State College area. Yes, It's smack in the middle of the country's largest Mega-plex, between DC and Boston - Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philly and Washington DC are all within a three-hour drive in four different directions- but it is also strangely isolated, like it's in Children of the Corn zone or "The Lottery". It's isolated in plain sight, or something. So there is a weird vibe to it, and I felt that way before Sandusky.

I would not have used the word until the rioting over Paterno, the dismissal by a vast majority of the fanbase of the Sandusky issues and denying that there should be penalties for the football program, and now advocacy for returning the Paterno statue to campus.

Yes, there is some nuts. But I hope the majority of there fanbase is not like this. ND has fans like this where we can do no wrong. Every fanbase has these nuts. I am careful to call people cultist because of glasshouses can come right back at you.

Oh and I do not like PSU just to clarify. I just do not like painting with a broad brush.

I've been out there for games, summer sports camps and a couple of pre-CoVid college tours for my kids. THEY refer to it as a cult. They say that they all drank the Kool-Aid. I've seen first hand, the entire cafeteria stop to watch HC JF get lunch and cut line to checkout. Even academic department heads speaking during an open house made a point to talk about how loyal they all are to PSU and how into all of their sports they are. It's on a level far beyond anything I've seen at any other college in the Northeast.

Maybe that last part's the key - PSU seems more cultish than perhaps it is because it is located in an area that is not generally nutso about college football. If it were located somewhere in Texas or Georgia or Louisiana, it might seem a lot more normal, LOL.

That's what did it for me.

It's one thing to take up for degenerate behavior, as bizarre as that is, and it's entirely another to lose your mind when that degenerate behavior is being seriously addressed.

RE: Cultists gonna cult - Dr. Isaly von Yinzer - 11-20-2020 06:57 PM

Calling Penn State fans cultists is definitely painting with them with a broad brush, but then again, it’s also not unfair.

They have always conducted themselves as a collectivist society and they will fall in line with this issue as well. As they proved during the entire sordid Sandusky affair, the institution is more important to them than anything else. They will protect Franklin on this one as he too was trying to protect the institution.

RE: Cultists gonna cult - UTEPDallas - 11-20-2020 07:28 PM

I for one don’t want the Paterno statue back.

RE: Cultists gonna cult - bill dazzle - 11-20-2020 07:56 PM

My brother-in-law is from Erie. His nephew attends the University of Pittsburgh. As a Vanderbilt fan, I appreciate the good work Jim Franklin did for my university.

Having said all that, ... and the posters in this thread might be correct ... there does seem to be at least a slight bit of cult-esque element with Penn State football — from what little I know.

Now, having saving that, and as a long-time Indiana fan ... IU hoops offers a bit of a cult-like following, too.

RE: Cultists gonna cult - Nittany_Bearcat - 11-20-2020 08:00 PM

The usual suspects here broadly grouping hundreds of thousands of PSU fans, students and alums into one big bucket of "cultists."

Given this will be a low-quality thread in terms of actual nuanced conversation, I will now leave. Carry on folks.

It's not a conspiracy, it's just a few thousand people working together to protect a criminal activity from punishment.

Or Florida. Places like FSU force you to go to the stadium since Financial Aid, Admissions, and all the other related offices are there.

Yeah? Franklin and his assistants did a great job at Vandy of covering up a rape. They even tried to make cell phone evidence go away. Boy, I'm a fan, not!

Agree 100 percent, JRSec. And that is one, of many, reasons I dislike James Franklin. Good point. The rape rape cover-up was a disaster. It was painful given my family's history with VU goes back to the 1920s.

Conversely, James Franklin got Black Nashvillians "believing in Vandy football," which 1. no previous coach had been able to do and 2. which I strong feel has been helpful to the university I love.

Let me be clear. I am an older white man who has mixed-race, Hispanic, Asian and black family members on both my mother's and father's side of the family. Jim Franklin helped our family "come to grips" with our "diversity as it relates to Vanderbilt football," and I love the man for that.

Does he deserve to be criticized for his flaws? No doubt. I criticize him to this day.

But he did a lot of positives for the university.

Bill, I appreciate your ability to find good, but a rape is a life altering heinous act. Justice in such a matter is greater than football. I'll remind you that the Bind Torture Kill mass murderer was a beloved leader in his Lutheran Church. Just saying!

Bill, I wish you and your relative the best. I don't see this as a Vanderbilt issue as much as it is a serious judgment issue of Franklin's. You know I am a rational guy. The issue of the rape cover up would not have arisen if not for the accusation that Franklin was covering up a threatened assault of a different kind. The situations are different but the MO of Franklin's priorities in cases involving his players and possible felony assault charges are the same.

That said I pray things go well with your relative.
