Is Navy choosing the Army/Navy game over conference duties? - Poseidon - 11-17-2020 05:38 PM

The Navy-Tulsa game was postponed due to Navy's covid issues. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30261994/coronavirus-issues-navy-lead-postponement-tulsa-game

So Navy/Tulsa can make it up on 12/12 and the Army/Navy game can be moved to 11/28 right. Or are they going to move it to 12/19?

OR does Navy send the middle finger to Tulsa and the AAC to keep their precious 12/12 date not being inconvenienced to simply move their game. Does the Navy sense of duty not extend to the conference they are a part of?

Here is Gladchuk's quote.
“That open weekend prior to Army is critically important,” Gladchuk said. “That said, we belong to a conference and whatever decisions are made by the leadership will dictate what Navy football must do. We have an obligation to the American Athletic Conference."

Doesn't sound like a middle finger to me.
Of course Navy has ensured that the AAC respects a single game which nets Navy, I don't know, about double our total disbursement from the AAC.

We talked about this at length in the two threads on postponement of these games:

Now when will you tell the full story about mean old ringknockers taking your lunch money and making fun of you in the Wardroom?

Why the bitter sentiment toward Navy - - or did you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

There's a pandemic, and it's unfortunate that there are schedule conflicts, but I'm sure the conference and Navy will work out an acceptable arrangement.

Even though there are rivalries and all, it seems important to maintain a respectful attitude toward the other schools in the conference, and I will add - - especially Navy!

I think there will be too many moving pieces to make up both games. Besides Army-Navy is on CBS and is a 2 million dollar payday for Navy.

Did you read the article? Army-Navy stays in place on Dec. 12. Memphis-Navy moves to Nov. 28, with Tulsa-Navy the following week, Dec. 5.

The displaced Memphis-Tulane game moves to Dec. 12, as does Tulsa-Cincy, which was scheduled for Dec. 5.

What's so hard about that? The biggest issues are Navy having no off weeks before Army, and Tulane going several weeks without a game. But it's all doable.

Article says the AAC is close to making this happen.

Navy is the only school that in the AAC that has split loyalties. The Army-Navy game is special. However it being were it is on the schedule is the creation of TV exec's. The game being where it is also prevents Army from joining the conference and bringing in more money for everyone. They could put it on Thanksgiving and make it a tradition there and both teams could be in the AAC, but no they let CBS tell to them and evryone else in the AAC that one game is preferred to a better conference for all. Navy is part of that equation. They could pull Army and possibly USAFA both into the AAC if they tried. Then add BYU or CSU eand you can have two 7 team divisions like the SEC and big ten with all the academies in one divison. It makes sense for everyone except possibly Army who apparently likes playing 2-3 FCS teams a year. That date for that game cost the conference and probably Navy if they weren't being short sided IMO. The CFB playoff will be possibly expanded in the next few years the conference needs to be as strong as it can as be medis wise at that point.

It's not about mot liking Navy. It's about not liking Navys srt up with Army.

The Army/Navy game extends past conference affiliation. It is a football tradition and if you don't like it you're a communist.

I don't know if this is a poor attempt at being a troll or if you are a genuine *******. However Navy in football is 20 times more important than Tulsa will ever be to this conference. The Army Navy game will always have greater viewership than any game with Tulsa. THAT IS GOOD FOR OUR CONFERENCE.

It's not about mot liking Navy. It's about not liking Navys srt up with Army.

Army-Navy moved to the second Saturday of December in 2009. Yes, that was absolutely a made for TV move. And it has paid off for CBS. Annually one of the top ten rated regular season games in all of CFB.
(This year will likely be a splash of cold water in the face - a lot of GOOD games moved to that weekend, and we may drop back to those 2008 numbers - ONLY 2-3 million.)

When the Big East came calling in 2011, Marinatto made concessions to Navy to maintain the status of Army-Navy. The then-BCS-autoqual conference made concessions to Navy to maintain the status of Army-Navy. So we should flip that script now? For pennies on the dollar?

And are you really suggesting that the adherence to the Army-Navy date has kept USAFA, BYU, Army, and others from saying "yes" to AAC expansion? That's...yeah, no.

"Split loyalties"? Well, if it came down to choosing between staying in the AAC and keeping the status of Army Navy...we're probably back to independence. Unhappily, overall - the strategic reasons Navy joined the Big East still apply to Navy being in the AAC and backing "P6" - but...

I'd cut Navy some slack on this. Navy-Army is a huge rivalry game. If Navy has to decide between that and the AAC, Navy will pick Army every single time!!!

If Tulane had an ancient rivalry that was always played on a certain date, then I wouldn't want it moved because of COVID. Army/Navy is something that brings normalcy when it is the only game on that date.

Also, college sports is about individuality and not conformance. The NFL already exists for that.

I think this is a freezing cold take.
