Expect a wild one. Too bad the PAC12 has an even number of teams struggling with testing...they will probably just regroup and play conference games. BYU is still looking per AD Holmoe. Cincy's schedule has been soft compared to Texas A&M or Florida. Or Clemson. But not compared to Ohio State or Notre Dame. Cincinnati has played 4 opponents who were ranked this year: UCF, Memphis, SMU, Army. And will play two more. Also played a decent opponent in Houston, who was beating BYU until 10 minutes left in the game. Notre Dame's schedule is similar to Cincinnati's in the number of difficult games (Clemson was obviously a higher level of difficulty). ND played 4 opponents who were ranked this year, two of whom shouldn't have been ranked. Scheduled to play one more ranked team. 2-7 Duke 1-8 USF 2-6 FSU 3-7 Louisville (ranked for 2 weeks) 3-5 Georgia Tech (who UCF beat by more than Notre Dame) 5-5 Pitt (ranked for 3 weeks) 6-4 Boston College (never ranked, but a decent team) 6-3 UNC 8-1 Clemson Ohio State has played 4 games, 3 of which are complete pushovers this year: 1-4 Nebraska 1-5 Penn State 2-4 Rutgers 5-1 Indiana RE: BYU wants one or two more games - UNT15 - 11-30-2020 10:22 PM (11-30-2020 12:37 PM)Captain Bearcat Wrote:(11-29-2020 01:36 PM)quo vadis Wrote:(11-29-2020 12:13 PM)f1do Wrote:(11-29-2020 09:44 AM)whittx Wrote: But Cincinnati has also beaten Army, UCF, and Memphis...Who has BYU beaten again... agreed. OSU's schedule has been laughable, at best. The B1G should be disqualified from CFP this year for how they've botched the season. Teams like Cincy and BYU should be rewarded for great seasons. I was onboard with a 9-0 Ohio State being in the CFP, but 7-0 against this garbage schedule? (Mich St and Michigan are crap too:) 2-3 Michigan State 2-4 Michigan RE: BYU wants one or two more games - quo vadis - 12-01-2020 10:49 AM (11-30-2020 12:37 PM)Captain Bearcat Wrote:(11-29-2020 01:36 PM)quo vadis Wrote:(11-29-2020 12:13 PM)f1do Wrote:(11-29-2020 09:44 AM)whittx Wrote: But Cincinnati has also beaten Army, UCF, and Memphis...Who has BYU beaten again... Sagarin has Notre Dame's schedule at #55, compared to #84 for Cincy. That's a difference. There seems to be some spin in your analysis. Teams that were ranked are meaningless because as we all know, things can change and a team we thought was good may not be. That applies to ND and Cincy's schedules. The difference in ND and Cincy's schedule is Clemson. Cincy has not and will not play anyone anywhere near playoff or even NY6 calibre. They have not faced any tests that tell us they are worthy of the playoffs, and they will not. The only ranked team on their schedule is Tulsa, and let's face it, Tulsa is a terrible example of a ranked team. They are 5-1, and should be 3-3 if it wasn't for abysmal home-cooking refereeing vs ECU and literally a miracle hail-mary vs Tulane. They just aren't any good. In contrast, when you play Clemson you play a playoff/NY6 level team, a real test of your worthiness. That's the issue I have with Cincy as a playoff contender. Unlike all the other playoff contenders, they have not and will not face any NY6-level opponents who we can gauge them against. Notre Dame has already played Clemson, and they will play Clemson again, while Cincy plays .... Tulsa. On that point, overall SOS can be deceptive. For example, let's say team X has played four FCS opponents but also Florida and Alabama. Team Y has played six opponents all about as good as Tulsa or Memphis. Because the FCS teams are so bad, the overall SOS of Team Y is likely to be stronger than Team X. But, Team X has played two NY6-level challenges while Team Y has played zero. An NY6-level team shouldn't have any trouble going 6-0 against a bunch of Memphises and Tulsas. But a NY6-level team is likely to suffer a loss, or even two, playing Alabama and Florida. The latter schedule is much more fraught with danger than the former. RE: BYU wants one or two more games - esayem - 12-01-2020 11:11 AM How is Ohio State’s schedule #19? Am I reading that correctly?! RE: BYU wants one or two more games - quo vadis - 12-01-2020 11:20 AM (12-01-2020 11:11 AM)esayem Wrote: How is Ohio State’s schedule #19? Am I reading that correctly?! Probably because 1/4 of their games have been against a good team, Indiana. But really, computer ratings of any kind are highly suspect this year. Too few OOC games and teams playing drastically different number of games. Garbage-in Garbage-out stuff for the most part. We really only have the eyeball test to go on. Am I reading that correctly?! Yes. They're meaningless unless you are comparing the American, CUSA, Sun Belt and Independents. They are the only ones with any significant games among each other. From what I'm seeing, the SEC is garbage after Alabama, Florida, Georgia and A&M. And we really don't know for certain that Florida, Georgia and A&M are good because they've only played SEC schools. RE: BYU wants one or two more games - Realignment - 12-02-2020 01:37 AM I actually think Ohio State will crap the bed and lose one of their next two games. At that point you would probably have. 1.) Alabama 2.) Notre Dame 3.) Clemson 4.) Texas A&M 5.) Florida 6.) Cincinnati At some point they need to have BYU at least in the Top 10. For Cincinnati you need Alabama & Notre Dame to win. If that happens I think the Final 4 would be Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Cincinnati in the CFB Playoff. BYU right now is just getting screwed but they have a great schedule next year and should at least get a NY6 Bowl if they go undefeated. RE: BYU wants one or two more games - THUNDERStruck73 - 12-02-2020 09:20 AM No, the committee is not letting a g5 into the CFP imho. The PAC12 or Big 12-2 champ will leapfrog them. It’s crappy, because Cincinnati deserves to be in. RE: BYU wants one or two more games - solohawks - 12-02-2020 10:41 AM If I was the CFP this would be the perfect year to let a G5 in. Would show its possible and with Covid this year its not like any bowls have to worry about an attendance hit. Then moving forward the CFP couldn't be accused of keeping out a nonP5 RE: BYU wants one or two more games - quo vadis - 12-02-2020 10:53 AM (12-02-2020 10:41 AM)solohawks Wrote: If I was the CFP this would be the perfect year to let a G5 in. Then moving forward the CFP couldn't be accused of keeping out a nonP5 It wouldn't surprise me if the committee was thinking along those lines. The committee has positioned Cincy far more favorably than any previous G5 team, even the UCF teams of 2017 and 2018. They are actually in the running for a playoff spot, and giving them one in this unique year might solve the perception issue you note above. RE: BYU wants one or two more games - f1do - 12-02-2020 05:51 PM WOW....KUTV reporter says on twitter that BYU will step in for Liberty who is having covid issues for college game day at #18 Coastal Carolina this Saturday! I could easily see undefeated Cincy snagging that 4th slot leapfroging A&M by virtue of their undefeated conference championship status RE: BYU wants one or two more games - f1do - 12-02-2020 06:08 PM Sounds like I need to pump the brakes a bit. Things aren't for sure as right now Liberty is still on for the game. Nicole Auerbach ? @NicoleAuerbach · 1m BYU and Coastal Carolina have had talks about playing each other on Saturday, sources tell @TheAthleticCFB. Coastal Football @CoastalFootball Contrary to what is being "reported" our game on Saturday, Dec. 5, versus @LibertyFootball will kickoff at 2 p.m. ET at Brooks Stadium. Bruce Feldman @BruceFeldmanCFB SOURCES: Liberty will make a determination tomorrow morning IF they can play CC. Liberty had an uptick in cases starting Sunday. Am told Freeze has been without a defensive staff all week. LU only has one guy on that side of the ball that's not tied up in COVID issues. Brett McMurphy @Brett_McMurphy · 1m Liberty QB Malik Willis tested positive for COVID & is out vs. Coastal Carolina, sources told @Stadium. Having NC at #17 with UCF at the same record of 6-3 not ranked is par for the course. It would have made a big difference if the UNC-UCF game would have been played. To the original OP, BYU is still in the picture since UC has to play Tulsa AND an AAC championship game, unlike BYU. This has to be in the committees mind. The game will kickoff at 5:30 p.m. ET and air on ESPNU. Several Liberty players and staff members, including star quarterback Malik Willis, tested positive or were quarantined this week because of COVID-19. The Flames (9-1) had still hoped to play in the game, but school medical officials would not allow it and paused all team-related activities after Wednesday's test results were returned Thursday morning. BYU (9-0) and Coastal Carolina (9-0) are both ranked this week in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Cougars are No. 13 and the Chanticleers No. 18. BYU, which last played Nov. 21, had been looking for another opponent. The Cougars weren't scheduled to play again until Dec. 12 against San Diego State. "We're grateful that this game between our two teams could be put together in such a timely fashion." BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a statement. "It's good to have a partner like ESPN that can help put together such a meaningful game at this point of the season." ESPN's College GameDay is set to broadcast Saturday from the Coastal Carolina campus. |
