Scheduling the ACC if Notre Dame were to join - Shannon Panther - 11-09-2020 11:55 AM

Let me preface this by saying, at this point I don't think that Notre Dame is ready to join full time. But, if they lose a rematch to Clemson and still get into the College Playoffs, or if Covid continues to be an issue, it could happen down the road.

With that said, I would like to propose the following as a scheduling proposal for a 15 team ACC.

1. Scrap the divisions and go with 5 permanent opponents and rotating 3 for an 8 game annual schedule.

2.This allows every class in their 4 years to play either a home or away with every member school. Currently there are classes that never play several opponents in their 4-5 years on campus.

3. 5 permanent and 3 rotating will allow the traditional rivalries to be enhanced, while sparking new ones with more frequent play.

4. Mathematically this makes the schedule work perfectly on a 3/6 year cycle.

5. Best conference records meet in the ACC Championship game. Tie breaker could be CFP ranking.

Having presented the merits of my proposal, I offer the following question. Who would you want as your 5 permanent opponents and why?

RE: Scheduling the ACC if Notre Dame were to join - Shannon Panther - 11-09-2020 11:56 AM

Here is who I would like to see for Pitt's permanent 5 opponents:

Syracuse - Pitt's third most played opponent all time.
Notre Dame - Pitt's fourth most played opponent of all time.
Miami - Pitt's fifth most played opponent of all time.
Virginia Tech - Pitt and the Hokies have developed a good rivalry that started in the Big East and has rekindled in the ACC.
Louisville - Geographically an easy trip for both fan bases. History in the Big East.

If not Louisville or VT then probably either BC or GT since they are both urban schools and face some of the same challenges as Pitt as college programs in Pro cities

I don't think the bolded is right ...

5 permanent opponents, with 3 rotating, would leave you 6 spots short of achieving home and away in 4 years.

You could see every school at least once, but not home and away.

Taking your preference for 5 permanent opponents to demonstrate this:

Pitt Year 1
5 Perm: Cuse, ND, Miami, Va Tech, Louis
3 Rotate: Fla State, Ga tech, Clemson

Pitt Year 2
5 Prm: Cuse, ND, Miami, Va tech, Louis
3 rotate: Duke, UNC, Wake

Pitt year 3
5 Perm: Cuse, ND, Miami, Va Tech, Louis
3 Rotate: Nc State, BC, UVA

In 3 years you would have played every school at least once.

In year 4 you can start getting the second year of your first 3 rotated in, to achieve the home/away balance. But you would need 2 more years to get through home and away for every conference member in this set up.

Pitt Year 4
5 perm: Cuse, ND, Miami, Va tech, Louis
3 Rotate: Fla St, Ga Tech, Clem

Pitt Year 5
5 Perm: Cuse, ND, Miami, Va tech, Louis
3 Rotate: Duke, UNC, Wake

Pitt Year 6
5 Perm: Cuse, ND, Miami, Va tech, Louis
3 Rotate: NC State, BC, UVA

Having said all that ... it's an interesting way to schedule, and superior to the system we have in place today, for sure. The NCAA really needs to allow conferences to do away with divisions if they want ... this restriction prevents easier scheduling for all conferences.

RE: Scheduling the ACC if Notre Dame were to join - Pervis_Griffith - 11-09-2020 12:36 PM

For Louisville's 5 permanent opponents, I'd prefer these:

Florida State -- history, geography
Georgia Tech -- geography
Virginia Tech -- geography, and rivalry back to Metro Conf/Independent days
Syracuse -- history between programs
Pittsburgh -- geography and history between programs

While these would be good, honestly, I wouldn't be unhappy with any random 5 chosen. I have no issues with any of the other conference members. It'd be fun to play any of them permanently.

You are correct. I meant to say either a home or away, but they still see every member in their 4-5 year career. I corrected it in my original post.

If you went to 4 permanent and 5 rotating with a nine game schedule, you could get to your goal

You are correct. However the 4 members that have an annual SEC game do not want a 9 game schedule. Neither would Notre Dame. Only having 4 OOC games would be a huge concession for them. Only having 3 would probably be a deal breaker.

No ain't virgin anymore, but we are going to have that re-virgining surgery to fool people.

I know you prefaced the statement but I had to add my bit.

The students voted that they liked ND beating the #1 team in the nation.

That had nothing to do with joining the ACC permanently. Zero.

If that game had been between independent ND and ACC Clemson (as originally scheduled), they would have still been out there on the field.

Another way to approach no division is the 4 - 3 - 1 where you play 4 teams every year, 6 teams every other year, and then play 3 teams once every three years.

RE: Scheduling the ACC if Notre Dame were to join - tj_2009 - 11-09-2020 02:36 PM

I suspect the ACC would try and add another school if Notre Dame would join, but which team to pick would probably be difficult to assess.

If they went with the 5 permanent rivals for Syracuse I would vote for:
- Pittsburgh
- Boston College
- Notre Dame
- Virgina Tech or Louisville
- Miami

Kind of like the old Big East type schedule.
I liked Notre Dame being in the conference this year and I think it would be a mutual benefit to both.
The benefit to Notre Dame, would be stability of earnings into the future regardless of how the football team does. It would be good for the administrators of Notre Dame to know that their earnings are going to be at a certain level into the future without regards to the NBC TV contract.

As to whether they decide to go with 5 permanent rivals, it would all be dependant on what the North Carolina schools want.
