If they held an “emergency” closed session via zoom call, would it even have to be announced? I’d imagine there have already been at least some informal one and two person meetings Alger likes to have with them.

The CAA is partially responsible for our growth and success. Whether or not you all want to admit it, we were always ranked higher in football as a result of the performance of our conference mates. A decade ago or so it was a model mid-major basketball conference. CAA league champs for Olympic sports are always competitive in the national tournaments. I'm excited about the future of JMU athletics but I'm not going to start talking smack about the schools in the CAA. They have the potential to still be a top 3 FCS conference even after our departure. Just because we've outgrown the CAA doesn't mean it's not poised to have some success in the future (*assuming UD, WM, UR stick around).

The CAA has not been the CAA you described in quite some time. It was a strong men's and women's basketball mid-major for two decades and occasionally boasted a very good program in other sports. CAA Football (which was technically A-10 until 2007) had a very strong decade but has drastically decreased in competitiveness over the last 5 years.

The conference WAS perfectly fine at one point, that is just clearly not the case anymore.

I get it, and think its a motivating factor for what may be happening as early as next week. I still think UR, WM, Villanova, and UD have a lot to offer in FCS football. Any given year, with the right coach, they could make a run at a National Championship. There aren't a lot of conferences not named the MVFC that can say that.

The decline in basketball, however, is very real. And that media deal may ultimately be the straw that broke the camels' back. I guess from where we received so much BS from fans of teams that were leaving, I'd like to think JMU won't start sh!tting on teams still left in the CAA. Anyway, onward!

Probably true about UR, VU and UD. I don't think W&M is sniffing relevancy in football anytime soon though. Which is sad because they had such a consistently solid program for such a long time. I'll never understand why VU didn't go harder in on football. Maybe they were content to concede the market to Temple and just focus on basketball (which has obviously been wildly successful).

OOCs...assuming 2023 is real start:

2023: Moorehead St (cancelled I'd wager)
2024: Presbyterian Blue Hose (wtf is that?); Monmouth; UNC
2025: Norfolk State; NC A&T; Monmouth: VTech
2026: Liberty
2027: nada
2028: UNC

I’m guessing 2025 would get reshuffled. NSU would probably get cancelled. Isn’t one of the Monmouth games away? That would definitely get cancelled too.

Shame if we don’t play Presbyterian, I wanted to face the coach who doesn’t punt if he doesn’t get fired or hired by Bama by then.

Since Monmouth is a H&H that one goes.
Moorehead and Pres stay. I know some people aren't going to like it, but I promise you we will play a cupcake FCS team every year.

Honestly, we are going to have to, there's a chance that some years the new SB East won't have a single bad team. Now, the record at the end of the year would suggest they were bad, but all have potential to be good year-in and -out. I think we will try to find the most winnable FCS games we can.

I believe us and ODU are going either way.

It would be athletic suicide for the program if they were not to go.

Almost arguably true for all 4 programs at this point.

ODU posters claim they turned down AAC interest, couldn't stomach the travel with texas schools.

I would say for everything the SB covers. I think they would want us for everything we have.
Obviously we have sports that the SB doesn't cover. There's a chance those stay CAA, but no idea.

The big question is, how far past 268 pages will this thread get before the official announcement on Monday? Then will this thread die afterwards?

I don't think JMU needs anything but Board of Visitors approval.

In regards to approval:

The law also requires state schools that want to add a major sport such as football, or seek to play at a higher NCAA level, receive approval from Intercollegiate Athletics Review Commission.

§ 30-359. Intercollegiate Athletics Review Commission; purpose; membership; terms; compensation and expenses.
A. As used in this chapter, "Commission" means the Intercollegiate Athletics Review Commission.

B. The Commission is established as an advisory commission in the legislative branch of state government. The purpose of the Commission is to review the plan and financing recommendations of the board of visitors of any public institution of higher education in the Commonwealth relating to the institution adding a major intercollegiate athletics program such as football or basketball or changing the division level of any of its existing intercollegiate athletics programs as set forth in subsection I of § 23.1-1309.

C. The Commission shall consist of eleven members as follows: the chair of the House Committee on Appropriations, or his designee, and three members of the House Committee on Appropriations appointed by the chair and the chair of the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriations, or his designee, and two members of the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriations appointed by the chair. In addition, the Auditor of Public Accounts, the Secretary of Education, the Secretary of Finance, and the Director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia shall serve as ex officio, nonvoting members of the Commission.

D. Members shall serve terms coincident with their terms of office. Vacancies for unexpired terms shall be filled in the same manner as the original appointments.

E. The members of the Commission shall elect a chairman and vice-chairman annually. A majority of the voting members of the Commission shall constitute a quorum. The meetings of the Commission shall be held at the call of the chairman or whenever the majority of the members so request.

F. Members of the Commission shall receive such compensation and reimbursement of expenses as provided in the general appropriation act.

This is bullcrap. The only approval this deal needs is Alger's mom's.

Any gathering of three or more is considered a meeting and public notice has to be given and the meeting opened to the public. They would likely find a reason to then go into executive session whcih would obviously not be open to the public. But we will definitely know there's been a meeting when it actually happens. But yeah, Alger, Bourne etc. can call all the members individually and discuss anything they want privately in advance.

The BOV would not wait until Nov. 18 to give its blessing. Business doesn't work that way. OU and Texas' boards met as soon as the deal was negotiated by staff.
