C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday morning - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-28-2020 06:50 PM C-USA is holding the cross country championships this Saturday, October 31 in Birmingham. The full cross country season will take place during the spring semester. Women's 6K (3.73 miles) is at 9:00 a.m., with the men's 8K (4.97 miles) at 10:00 a.m. I will work on a preview. The men's team is led by seniors Hociel Landa and Alex Topini. The women are led by the super sophomore Grace Forbes. RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-28-2020 08:17 PM Unfortunately, Alex is out (ankle). While Jon has a solid group, this does not help. RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-29-2020 01:21 AM Unlike in previous years, when cross country resumes next semester, there will be no regional meets to determine which teams and individuals will qualify for the NCAA Championships. As you may remember, Rice is in the South Central region, which, for both men and women, has been dominated in recent years by Arkansas and Texas. Only the top 2 teams from each of the 9 regions have automatically qualified for the NCAAs, with the remaining 13 schools qualifying by virtue of their results during the season. This coming season, all 31 will be determined this way. For individuals, it gets a little trickier. In normal years, the top 4 individuals at each region who are NOT on a team that qualified will earn at-large entries for the championships. This year, only the winner at each conference meet will earn an at-large spot. So, for all practical purposes, this will be the best opportunity for Grace to qualify. But, with MTSU and UTEP having outstanding individuals, it will be anything but easy. This is confusing. With no regionals, it would seems that it can't be "this way" (top two in region + 13 based on season results) but rather some other way. Will 36 individuals (9 x 4) still qualify for the NCAAs? If so how will they be determined? Only 1 per conference (best individual not on the conference champion team), which makes 31? Or is there some national or quasi-regional comparison of conference meets to pick the 36 who'd qualify? RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-29-2020 09:46 PM My post was confusing - and, I only have sketchy details. I know that the individual runners who win their conference championships will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. All teams will qualify based on how they do in various meets during the season. I realize that is as clear as mud, but the bigger meets will help to slot teams based on their finish in those and other meets. At this time, I have no idea how the other at-large individuals will be determined - probably in the same way the teams are chosen. I would assume that if an individual who won his/her conference is on a team that qualifies, then the automatic slot works go to the next highest finisher. But, I'm not sure. And the only meet result Rice will have will be Saturday's conference championship, right? Good luck, Owls!! NCAA Championships are March 8. RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-30-2020 11:16 PM There is very little information that can be gleaned from other teams, in that there have been so few meets. The Rice men's team will be handicapped by the injury to senior Alex Topini, but Coach Jon Warren has some good depth behind senior Hociel Landa. Senior Matt Murray (from Pearland) has the best speed on the team, and, if he is able to run conservatively early on, could be set up for a top-15 finish. Junior Andrew Abikhaled, sophomore Ace Castillo, sophomore Travis Dowd and redshirt freshman Eliot Metcalf should also do well. True freshman Davis Thames will also compete. UTEP has a solid team, but not as dominant as it has been in recent years. Charlotte, likewise, is good, but their really super runners from the past couple of seasons have graduated. With all of that being said, I would be stunned if anyone is even close to Middle Tennessee - they should toy with the other teams. It really is a race for second place. If we had Alex, I think we could have made a big run for 2nd. RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-30-2020 11:32 PM With so many of the women's team members redshirting this fall, it really will be all about Grace Forbes, and her goal of winning the individual title. Junior Ashley Messineo should be able to contend for a spot among the top 20. Sophomore Rachel Shoemaker had some good moments last fall, and could be one of the top 3 Owls in this meet. Redshirt freshman Taigen Hunter-Galvan, an 800 meter runner on the track, has improved her distance running this fall, and should show well. Senior Maddie Forbes, the older sister of Grace, will also compete on Saturday. Rounding out the team for this meet will be sophomore Natalie Goddard and freshman from California Haley Allen. As with the men, I fully expect a dominant meet from Middle Tennessee. No one should be close. On paper, Southern Miss should be the favorite for runners-up. UTEP is a little down from usual. I would say that the biggest competitors to Grace for the overall title will be: Carolyne Chepkosgei (UTEP) Eusila Chepkemei (MTSU) Joice Jebor (MTSU) RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday - WRCisforgotten79 - 10-30-2020 11:36 PM The women's 6K will be at 9:00 a.m., CDT The men's 8K will be at 10:00 a.m., CDT RESULTS RE: C-USA Cross Country Championships this Saturday morning - dragon2owl - 10-31-2020 09:17 AM Grace with a 50 seconds lead after 4.9K mark.
