Game Time Announcements/Speculation - schmolik - 10-19-2020 03:05 PM

I started a similar thread at the Big Ten board.

Each Monday, the ACC announces game times for most of the games for the Saturday 12 games later. For example, today they announced the game times for games on Halloween. Occasionally, they will hold games and save the game times until six days in advance, waiting for the week's results before determining.

The thread can also be used to speculate game times as well. One website that does a lot of predictions for this purpose is Matt's College Sports Media Blog. On Sundays, he predicts game times the day before the announcements are made and on Monday he lists the official game times:

https://mattsarzsports.blogspot.com/

The ACC times for Halloween: https://theacc.com/news/2020/10/19/football-acc-announces-game-times-networks-for-oct-31.aspx

It's a double header on ABC, first Boston College at Clemson at noon ET followed by Notre Dame at Georgia Tech. So if you couldn't get enough of the 73-7 beatdown or the 12-7 snoozefest, ABC is your home for college football on Halloween!

Of course the real game on ABC is in prime time, Ohio State at Penn State.

Lol, a Big Ten fan comes on an ACC board with some ****** snark. Classic.

I never watch Big Ten games. Go away.

The real game? Real game of what? Determining who is going to be the Big Slow victim of a first round loss at the hands of Clemson or Bama?

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - TexanMark - 10-19-2020 06:09 PM

Just pencil in Cuse for 12 or 12:30 almost every week (save for Notre Dame and Louisville).
RSN or ACCN

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - schmolik - 10-19-2020 06:24 PM

I can't wait until Nov. 7. At least one of Clemson or Notre Dame will lose! The problem is one of them will win.

Basketball season can't come soon enough so I can see Duke, North Carolina, etc. kick those two silly.

Did you really think that your snarky post would be well received on this board?

Really? Before you typed it, you thought "Boy, these guys will really enjoy my post."

Was that your actual thought process?

Look, I already know that Clemson will kick ND's ass that day.

Does that validate you somehow?

The Big Ten teams could all disband for all that I pay attention to them, and I was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania.

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - schmolik - 10-19-2020 06:55 PM

I'm here to discuss the ACC. I'm not here to make friends. If people here want to act like cocks I'm going to call them out on it. I'd rather watch an evenly matched game between two top 10 teams than an obvious mismatch and a game of a team that underachieved last Saturday. On Nov. 7, I'd rather watch Clemson at Notre Dame than Rutgers at Ohio State.

This is an ACC board. Is the rules here that everyone has to be pro ACC and no one can talk bad about it or any of its members? Obviously when two ACC teams play each other they can't both win so there has to be some smack talk. So if a North Carolina fan smacks Virginia it's OK but if a Big Ten fan does it's not? If you're a Clemson fan, you want to watch Clemson games. If you're not, you don't want to see 73-7 every week. I'm sure many ACC fans on this board don't want to watch 73-7 every week.

I started this thread to point out game times when they come out and discuss them (whether they are good games or otherwise). We can discuss/debate whether the best games are on ABC/ESPN or should they have chosen different games. Before ABC/ESPN, we can speculate/debate which games should be the "showcase" games. It doesn't have to be Notre Dame or Clemson every week. Of course they are the best TV draws. But maybe a more competitive game would be better to showcase once in a while, especially a rivalry game.

The ACC is my 2nd favorite conference. I will admit I'm more of a men's basketball ACC fan than a football fan. I hope this board is really into basketball. I'll enjoy the board then.

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - TerryD - 10-19-2020 07:46 PM

Look, I have despised the Big Ten for over fifty years.

Everyone on these boards knows that.

Do you know what I have never done?

I have never gone on the Big Ten board here and posted a snarky post like your original post.

Do you know why?

Because it is classless and juvenile, that is why.

Act like cocks? Look in a mirror, maybe.

But hey, you do you. Carry on.

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - Schema - 10-19-2020 11:27 PM

Here are a couple of notes regarding this year's conference scheduling up to this point in time. First, on all but one Saturday so far, the ACCN has aired three games (Noon, 4, and 8). Second, the RSN contract is for 17 football games a year. So far, there have been ten games either aired on RSN or scheduled to be on RSN through October 31. That leaves seven additional RSN games that need to be scheduled.

Excluding Dec 12, since it only has two makeup games so far, there are five more regular season Saturdays after October 31. As of now, these are the number of conference controlled games for those remaining five Saturdays.

Nov. 07 = 6 (Clemson @ ND is on NBC)
Nov. 14 = 5
Nov. 21 = 6
Nov. 28 = 5
Dec. 05 = 7 (Cuse @ ND is on NBC)

If the patterns holds, three of those games will be on the ACCN and one will be on RSN each week. Plus, there will need to be two weeks where a second RSN game is scheduled. Nov. 21 and Dec. 05 make the most sense for a double-dip of RSN windows.

Of course, everything is subject to change, and it is possible that on some of those weeks, there are only two games on ACCN. However, using the pattern we've seen so far, it looks like after ACCN, RSN, and NBC, that only leaves one additional game each Saturday that has to be placed on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPNEWS.

Speaking of ABC, the uniqueness of this football season during a pandemic has lead to an above average exposure of ABC games for the ACC. A lot of this can be attributed to the fact that the B1G and PAC-12 have not started their seasons yet, leaving more available slots. Over the past five years, the ACC has had a conference controlled game on ABC an average of 12.8 times per regular season. 2015 = 12, 2016 = 14, 2017 = 15, 2018 = 12, 2019 = 11. So far, there have been 13 games either on ABC or scheduled to be on ABC through October 31. While there are no guarantees that any additional games will appear on ABC after October 31, you have to think a few more are possible. Miami at Virginia Tech on Nov. 14 could be a good one if both teams keep doing well. Clemson at FSU on Nov. 21 is a possibility. Pitt at Clemson on Nov. 28 has an outside chance. Finally, UNC at Miami also has a good chance on Dec. 05. A lot will also depend on how things shake out in the Big-12, B1G, PAC-12, and American. I'm also interested in seeing how things work with the PAC-12 since none of their games during their first six weeks of play are going to be on the P12N.

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - orangefan - 10-20-2020 09:03 AM

Some on topic observations.

The ACC and ESPN appear committed to fulfilling their contractual obligations to supply 40 live games to ACCN and 17 games to the RSN package. There were originally two RSN games scheduled for 10/31, but that has been reduced to one, leaving ESPN obligated to find another weekend to provide an extra game to the RSNs.

Through 10/31, the ACC will have provided 25 games to ACCN and 10 games to the RSN package. The ACC, ignoring Notre Dame home games, has the following remaining games by week.

11/7 6 (including Miami at NCSU on Friday on ESPN)
11/14 5
11/21 7 (including SU at Louisville on Friday on ESPN)
11/28 7 (including 2 Friday games)
12/5 6
12/12 3 (including a UNC Friday game already committed to ACCN)

7 more games need to be provided to the RSN package, which means the RSN package will have 2 more doubleheaders. 15 will need to be ACCN games, including UNC's Friday game on 12/11, meaning it will have to show three games every week but one through 12/5.

11/21 looks like a good bet for an extra RSN game. The dates of other RSN doubleheader and ACCN doubleheader-only weekend are likely to be driven by ESPN's available inventory from other conferences, which is too complicated to figure out here. It is probably as simple as having the ACCN and RSN doubleheaders be the same weekend, with the ACCN's otherwise third game simply shifted to the RSN package.

Is this a thing? Predicting when games start?

I thought everyone in the Big Ten coveted the Saturday at 12 noon slot anyway. And every other starting time was minor league.

OK Big Ten .... you keep doing you.

Actually, Dec 12th already has 3 ACC games, one of which is already earmarked for ACCN:

2020 ACC FOOTBALL SCHEDULE - WEEK 15

Friday, December 11
Western Carolina at North Carolina, 7:00pm, ACCN

Saturday, December 12
Virginia at Virginia Tech, Time / TV TBA
Notre Dame at Wake Forest, Time / TV TBA

I'm guessing both of those games may end up on ACCN because...

Other games (so far) on that weekend include:

Saturday, December 12
Vanderbilt at Missouri
LSU at Florida
Army vs. Navy, 2:00 pm, CBS
Boise State at Wyoming, 5:00 pm, CBSSN
Utah State at Colorado State, 8:30 pm, CBSSN
AAC Championship, TBA, ABC or ESPN (may move to 12/19)
Fresno State at New Mexico, TBA, FS1 or FS2 / FSGo
Michigan at Ohio State, Time TBA, FOX
(note: all of the following are time/network TBA):
Oklahoma State at Baylor (rescheduled)
Big 12 Championship (may be moved?)
California at Washington State
Houston at Memphis (rescheduled)
Illinois at Northwestern
Michigan State at Penn State
Minnesota at Nebraska
Oregon State at Stanford
Purdue at Indiana
Rutgers at Maryland
USC at UCLA
Washington at Oregon
Western Michigan at Ball State
Wisconsin at Iowa
(and more!)

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - Schema - 10-20-2020 03:49 PM

The UNC game that is already assigned to ACCN is on Friday, Dec. 11. As far as I've seen, there are only two ACC games on that Saturday, Dec. 12, so far. Regardless, I excluded that day mainly because I don't know if RSN would be a factor on that weekend or not since it is not a normal Saturday when RSN would typically be in play.

It’s fascinating how truly problematic the RSN games are to the ACC. It puts the ACCN at a disadvantage as compared to the BTN and SECN when scheduling games.

As bad as it was to subcontract some ACC content to Raycom, allowing them to then subcontract some of that to the Fox (now Sinclair) RSNs was far, far worse.

But Chad Swofford still has a job, and that’s what matters.

As bad as it was to subcontract some ACC content to Raycom, allowing them to then subcontract some of that to the Fox (now Sinclair) RSNs was far, far worse.

This season is particularly difficult because of the reduced number of available games. From 2016 through 2019, the ACC provided 91-92 games annually to ESPN excluding the ACC CCG. This year, it has only 84 games to offer. However, it appears that the 84 games will be sufficient for the ACC to satisfy its obligations to ESPN and for ESPN to satisfy its obligations to Sinclair of 17 games and to the ACCN for 40 games.

In 2019, for instance, ACC football games were featured on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2 28 times, again excluding the ACC CCG. It would have been 29 times except that FSU-Boise was moved to a different timeslot due to whether concerns and had to be shifted to ESPNews. This left 63 games for other channels, including 17 for Sinclair and 41 on the ACCN, one more than required. 2 games were shown on ESPNU and 3 on ACCNX. Essentially, the ACC provided 6 games more than ESPN needed, those shown on ESPNU and ACCNX and the 41st game carried by ACCN.

I believe that Sinclair has no higher than the 5th pick of games each week, meaning that it will rarely feature a game that is significant to anyone but the fanbases of the participating schools. The ACCN effectivelly gets 2 picks before Sinclair. Because of the 10 game conference schedule this year, though, the RSN schedule is quite a bit stronger than usual.

It is important to note that the obligation to provide games to Sinclair is ESPN's not the ACC's. Because of the lack of inventory from other conferences, its obligation to Sinclair has limited its own ability this season to carry games on ESPN2, for instance, that may have been preferable to games from the SBC and other conferences that it did end up showing. In other years, this would not be an issue.

The biggest problem with the RSN package from my perspective is that carriage of the RSNs themselves is negotiated separately from that of ESPN. As a result, not all multichannel services that carry the ESPN suite of channels also carry the RSN package. This limits options and requires viewers in some markets to choose between a more expensive package or losing the opportunity to watch some games.

Finally, my guess is that when the Sinclair package finally ends, its package of ACC games will be moved to ESPN+. This will require another payment but at least we won't be captive to our local RSN's ability to reach terms with our preferred multichannel service.

RE: Game Time Announcements/Speculation - Schema - 10-21-2020 03:08 PM

So, so much can happen/change between now and the time the RSN contract expires in 2026-2027. However, it will be interesting to see what is done with those additional 17 games at that point, especially with Disney reportedly purchasing more SEC content in 2024. Of course, a lot of that depends on what happens with Disney's contracts with other conferences that will be expiring before the ACC's RSN contract does and how many available widows Disney will have each week when those 17 games become available. I suppose there is also a chance that Sinclair may not even last until the end of the RSN contract.
