I have to wonder how many of these people who claim to be boycotting sports were really "fans" to begin with. I disagree with a lot of things said by athletes, actors, and musicians - but I still watch sports and movies, and I still listen to music.
#CuttingOffYourNoseToSpiteYourFace

To be fair, I suppose there are certain - really heinous - things a celebrity might say that would make me boycott that person, but it would have to be EVIL; just voicing an opinion contrary to my own isn't enough to make me give up college football.

JMO though.

RE: Marist Poll - Sports Fans Watching Fewer Live Broadcasts - Buckminster Fuller - 10-15-2020 09:21 AM

I make no statement as to reliability of the results or the methodology employed. Everyone who cares to do so may read the report for themselves and draw their own conclusions. I posted it because I thought it might be of interest to those on the board. I would note that the individuals polled identified themselves as sports fans. Certainly, anyone can lie to a pollster. So, if you take the cynical view that people lied so they could be included in and skew the poll results, then I guess that is possible, and this and, frankly, every poll is essentially worthless. I guess that is a valid position, but they can be fun to discuss regardless.

I read the article and did not see the word "boycott". I am not boycotting shrimp nor scallops but am eating less of them because of the indirect effects of Covid. The two places I like eat seafood are:

a. A white, redneck, truck-driving, cattle farming, hole in the wall
b. A black, Health grade B, transient attracting, without air conditioning, hole in the wall

In both places there are patrons whom I don't want to interact with and breathe their non-masked exhalations. Place "a" plays horrible x-brand white Christian music. I can get some decent gospel in the black place, but that's if the loudspeakers are working. And to be entirely fair, I would avoid Pike Place market in Seattle if I could emotionally stand the flight out there.

I am watching less and my wife is watching less. The real why we are watching less is that sports doesn't matter as much if you:

a. Are turned off by the sanitized, bland, packaging
b. Are worried about parents or kids
c. Are turned off in general about devolution of our politics
d. Are tired of ANYONE's *** **** political manifesto
c. Want to completely shut out the world

For me one of the key issues with polling is question design. Polling about a choice between a and b is easy. Polling about why someone believes something is more complex and even if you give 5-7 answer choices, for a lot of people you are getting their chosen representation of their rational for an opinion.

Even the answer "athletes speaking out about political issues" masks the stupid talking heads who after allowing the athletes a turn at the mike of the public stage regurgitate such issues in the pre-game coverage.

I think Marist is a good polling organization with valid methods. You could critique what appears to be a truncated list of possible choices for less viewing but let's take NASCAR and the Scot-Irish, Highland Scots, diaspored, white, less educated, people living in rural parts of western NC, and Va that are my and the wife's relatives one side of the family. A short hand description of the might be rednecks.

On the issue of NASCAR, if you prick them about it, yes they will toss popular political trope, mouth something stupid said by Trump and will leave it at that, unless you prick them more. Then here is what you get:

a. They feel exploited economically in the past by NASCAR and don't like the non-Appalachian aspect of the sports evolution
b. There are no more wrecks - removing the potential for excitement

Follow along with me as I tease this out further. Those two explanations contextualize resentment against the "Nanny State, imposed safety restrictions, alien cultural invasion, and the implication and forcing of them to consider that they have been conned or are stupid.

I refuse to even question the few remaining baseball fans, but will be a pall bearer when they die. 04-cheers

I try to avoid watching shows and movies staring actors/actresses that are a member of that group. Now, if it is a series that I've already been watching and one of these individuals joins the cast, I don't stop watching it immediately, but it does make me feel crappy for continuing to watch it. :) I do try my best to not watch anything that features one of these individuals when I know they are one of the main characters. Anyway, I know that may seem silly, but I just don't like feeling like I contributed to their continued success, which I feel like helps keep the organization they belong to moving forward.

Your post just made me thing of that.

EXCELLENT POST. Except for the part about where you each shrimp and scallops - you really need to find more sanitary restaurants! Your insights on polling are useful.

Another EXCELLENT POST... and I know what you mean. My wife and I were just discussing this topic the other day; we concluded that if we were totally strict about who and what we would watch, we'd never watch another movie or tv show again.

...which actually might not be a bad idea - I'm just not ready for that yet.

I'm boycotting multiple sports and find the I don't miss them as much as I thought I would. The longer I stay away, the less I care.

RE: Marist Poll - Sports Fans Watching Fewer Live Broadcasts - CardinalJim - 10-15-2020 02:31 PM

I’m not consciously boycotting anything. I’m not a sports fan. There are specific teams I follow in different sports. For example I follow Liverpool in the EPL. I’m not the kind of fan that’s going to watch an Man City / Man United match just because it’s on.

I don’t appear to be watching less. I watch my teams when they are on, that’s it.

For me, it's a combination of less interest and wanting to avoid politics in everything but the news. I'm not watching MLB, NBA, NASCAR, and NHL. I'm watching less of NFL (because the Redskins suck), on the other hand because of the sports void, I'm watching more college football and will be watching more college basketball when it starts up. It doesn't balance out though. As a whole I'm watching way less sports than I used too.

Back in the day at NC State I would occasionally eat at R and B's Broasted Chicken. Usually they had a grade C meaning they should be closing. It was quasi open to the air due to cement cracks in the cinder block. The place was run by the oldest looking black man I have EVER seen. Snow white hair and eyebrows. He looked to be 110, but probably was only 75.

One day when I was there, a man from the Wake County Health Department was there trying to shut him down. Then two NC highway patrolmen pulled up and walked in and asked if the man from the County was giving him a problem. The old man said "I don't think so". The troopers then left with Governor Martin's take out order.

The restaurant was still running two year later.

Here's the moral. You don't have real food SW Virginia. Sorry about that, just the truth. And if the place is spic and span and the food is bland it's a waste of money.

Fry something and whatever bug jumped in just becomes extra protein. 04-cheers

Hey I knew I liked you. Liverpool is my club and EPL has become my favorite sports league. I will watch all day if I could.

Otherwise I watch college football and am done with NBA for multiple reasons. NFL is dead to me minus check of stats of former ND players. NHL, I love the playoffs but didn't watch this year.

You're not hurting my feelings any - I was born and raised in Upstate SC. Weaned on brown mustard pork bbq. I want to VT because they gave me a scholarship and I really liked it when I visited... and Clemson was too close for comfort.

RE: Marist Poll - Sports Fans Watching Fewer Live Broadcasts - TerryD - 10-15-2020 07:05 PM

I don't boycott or watch less of anything because of anything.

I am a fan of certain teams and have been for decades.

I'm a Notre Dame fan, a Steelers fan, a Pirates fan.

Nothing political or social or otherwise changes my viewing habits regarding those teams.

Politics? New rules? News coverage of the election?

Those things are completely irrelevant to my sports viewing habits.

For instance, I still watch the Pittsburgh Pirates lose games for ****'s sake.

I am pretty much like Cardinal Jim in that respect.

P.S. I lived in South Louisiana for 36 years. Neither Virginia, nor North Carolina nor South Carolina has any real food by comparison.

My favorite Sci-Fi joke: why were there no Cajuns on the Nostromo in the movie Alien?
A: Because if there had been, they would've caught that creature, cooked it and served it over rice.

Their reputation for cooking spans the galaxy, apparently.

To be fair, I suppose there are certain - really heinous - things a celebrity might say that would make me boycott that person, but it would have to be EVIL; just voicing an opinion contrary to my own isn't enough to make me give up college football.

I turned on MLB opening day ... saw the BLM on the mound ... didn't watch another pitch of MLB until the NLCS. If the Braves weren't in it that streak would still be unbroken. I did however watch every single KBO game ESPN broadcast in English instead.
