The CAA schools hate each other - Article - solohawks - 10-02-2020 07:41 PM

CAA IS A MESS

Interesting takeaways....

Even the Commish cannot identify what defines a CAA School

The CAA football affiliates canceled the football season before the full members could even have a say

The leagues ADs don't really get along and there is ZERO league unity

JMU is getting more and more frustrated

Expansion to 12 would help but they cannot agree on who to add

The ASun has put out feelers to certain CAA schools

A potential CUSA split could impact the CAA....i.e. bye bye JMU

Well worth reading.

Never really has been much vision amongst CAA leadership. Tom Yeager didn't know how to put together a bigger TV deal, etc when CAA basketball was in the golden era described in the article, so best basketball teams left . Meanwhile football dreams of all kinds by various schools.

Perhaps the current environment will open doors to realignment in ways that havent been open ng in a while, and UNCW can end up in a basketball only conference in a geographical arrangement that makes sense.

We shall see.

UNCW, UNCG, CofC, Davidson, VCU, George Mason, George Washington should all be in the same conference. Start there, and add on.

Is there any evidence that anyone in a position of authority at UNCW is doing anything to try to make something like this happen?

RE: The CAA schools hate each other - Article - TribePride91 - 10-05-2020 02:15 PM

Perhaps it is merely hatred for W&M's current AD. There seems to be plenty of that.

As for the listed teams in a basketball only conference with UNCW, several of those schools are already the A-10. They aren't leaving so I guess the best hope is for UNCW to get an A-10 invite.

I certainly have enjoyed the games between the Tribe and UNCW and the Tribe and Hofstra over the last 8-9 years. But, even though I would indicate that the 2017 UNCW team is the best one of the last 7-8 years, the conference hasn't been close to the multiple bids it received in the past. Perhaps it is as simple as none of the Power 5 wanted the CAA to have a real shot to get another team to the Final 4. Amazing to think that both George Mason and VCU did it.

The current leadership is not any better than what existed with Yeager. But, if the parties cannot agree on much, that would explain some of it. JMU's football program is significantly better than any other CAA member(and really all but one in all of FCS), but the rest of their sports(aside from Women's basketball) is nothing special. I'm not sure it makes financial sense for them to move up given that they still won't get a seat at the Power 5 table.

03-confused

outside of football and women's basketball,

2018 Women's Lacrosse NATIONAL Champions (beat UVa, Florida, UNC and Boston College to win title. Final 3 games televised on ESPN).
https://www.ncaa.com/news/lacrosse-women/article/2018-05-27/james-madison-outlasts-boston-college-thriller-win-2018-di

2018 Men's Soccer - Elite Eight, 10 minutes away from College Cup (Final 4) (Michigan State scored twice in last 10 minutes to overturn 1-0 JMU lead :-( )

2013-2019 Softball - 7 straight NCAA's (would have been 8 but for covid) including 2 Super Regionals, both times 1 game away from College World Series. ranked in Top 25 every year. Only other non-p5 that is ever ranked along with JMU is Louisiana. Don't take my word for it: https://d1softball.com/2020-top-50-college-softball-programs-countdown-21-25/
Also: 2017 National Player of the Year Megan Good
Too many ESPN television appearances to list

that's just to start.

But...."nothing special"?

Between firing Shaver and just recently
cutting 7 varsity sports, W&M seems to be a hot mess at this point.

RE: The CAA schools hate each other - Article - 82hawk - 10-07-2020 12:13 PM

The AD didn't make a single move without the support of the university President. Watch for most of the cuts to remain, while the new AD benefits from the dirty work that was done by Huge.

Back to the CAA as a whole. Football is the divide that cannot be breached. It's driving who we want and it's driving who wants to leave. FCS football is becoming a financial anchor for a lot of schools. So cutting sports becomes the cost.

Ouch. She wasn't there all that long, BUT... just long enough to do some severe long-term damage.

Quote:“The addition of this national television package with CBS Sports Network, combined with our current agreement with ESPN, will provide the Southern Conference with double-digit national linear men’s basketball telecasts every year and will signify the largest national television package in conference history.

SoCon has a deal with ESPN that allows games on local TV AND games on CBS Sports Network??

Pretty much shoots down the "Why we went with Flo" propaganda from JoeyD

Not necessarily. Negotiations are 2 way streets, you have to have 2 willing sides to make an agreement. Just because ESPN was willing to make that deal with the SoCon does not mean they were willing to make that deal with the CAA. I think it speaks more to the leadership and where ESPN sees us in comparison. They are more marketable right now, they get the sweeter deal. At the height of the CAA, ESPN was slobbering all over getting CAA games. SoCon is just a more desirable league to showcase right now, and cant say I disagree.

We also dont know how hard we tried for anything. Our leadership cant even hold a candle to their leadership abilities. That matters too. Companies are more willing to hold negotiations with competent people than ones who are not.

Perhaps. But give the lack of leadership we have seen on all fronts, i'm going to write this off of where there is smoke, there is fire. Several conferences, lower than us the last few months have been pointed out that have better deals.

RE: The CAA schools hate each other - Article - dan10 - 04-20-2021 01:58 PM

You wont get disagreement from me. I was just playing devils advocate on how things work. Not everyone is offered the same deal. Ultimately none of us were in those negotiations, so all we are left with is speculating. We also all agree, this deal cant end soon enough (with FLO and our commish)
