Pennsylvania (15)

I'm assuming NCAA Division 1 Men's

Here's my shot:

Texas (8):
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
TCU
Baylor
Houston
SMU
Stephen F. Austin
(I'm not 100% sure Rice ever made it so I won't count them)

California (11):
UCLA
USC
California (Berkeley)
Stanford
St. Mary's
Pepperdine
Long Beach State
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara
San Diego State
San Jose State (I think it was 1996)

New York (6):
Syracuse
St. John's
Stony Brook
Buffalo
Iona
Siena

North Carolina (8):
North Carolina (duh!)
Duke
NC State
Wake Forest
Charlotte
East Carolina (I think they played UNC one year and had a losing record)
Western Carolina? (I think they played Purdue?)
UNC Wilmington (Upset USC in 2002)
(There's 8 more of these?)

Pennsylvania:
Villanova
Temple
St. Joseph's
Penn
La Salle
Drexel
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Lehigh (Beat Duke!)
Bucknell (Beat Kansas!)
Lafayette
Robert Morris
(There's 3 from my own state I don't know?) I'm not sure Duquesne ever made it

NEW YORK (18)
Syracuse, St. John's, Stony Brook, Siena, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Fordham, Colgate, Cornell, Niagara, St. Bonaventure, Canisius, Buffalo, Binghamton, Albany, Hofstra, Wagner

I know Army and St. Francis Brooklyn have never qualified. The other 3 are probably Columbia and some combination of these no longer D1s: NYU, Queens College, Brooklyn College, Utica College.

RE: College Basketball Challenge - schmolik - 10-01-2020 02:35 PM

Total brain fart on a lot of the New York schools. I realized Albany when I read the Colonial football post. I should have known Cornell and St. Bonnie's as well as Hofstra although they haven't been in for a while. And how could I have forgotten Davidson (Steph Curry!)?

Yes, Rice has 4 tournament appearances, but the last was in 1970.

Schmolik added Lamar and UTEP. I know Texas Southern and Sam Houston have played recently. That’s 13.

Have to think most of the Southland Conference has made it, so let’s add Texas State and Abilene Christian. Looked up their champions, and there’s North Texas, UTSA, Texas-Arlington, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, too. 19.

Prairie View A&M was SWAC champion a couple of times. 20

Schools from PA in the tournament

Nova, StJoes, Temple, Penn, LaSalle & Drexel (Big5+)
Bucknell, Lafayette & Lehigh (Patriot)
Pitt, Duquesne & PSU (non-Philly)
Mt St Mary’s, F&M, Widener & Philadelphia (guesses)

Was 13 for 13 at the start, then went down in flames

RE: College Basketball Challenge - schmolik - 10-01-2020 05:45 PM

BatonRougeEscapee got Lamar and UTEP.

I just remembered Pacific, while in the WCC, did win the Big West before.

Also from the WCC ... (you forget a lot since Gonzaga dominates the conference and St. Mary's and BYU have been the other good teams)

San Diego (I believe they won a game? 2008 or 2009? I'm questioning because I'm not looking anything up for this challenge)
Santa Clara - Steve Nash
Loyola Marymount - How could I have forgotten Hank Gathers!

Can anyone confirm Duquesne actually made the NCAA Tournament? Is Mt. St. Mary's actually in PA? Where in PA are they?

Yes, Duquesne has been in many NCAA tournaments.
Mt St Mary’s is in the NEC...they’re near Gettysburg, bordering Maryland. Their ex-coach coached for over 50 years and once held the record for games coached. Another NEC school also made the tournament.

I still haven't looked at the record book, but I'd be willing to guess West Texas A&M made it at least once as West Texas State. I think C.W. Post may have made it from New York, as well.

Edit: I looked at the other posts and realized I forgot St. Bonaventure in New York.
