CAA Spring Schedule Outlined - 6 conference games + 2 OOC - TDenverFan - 09-30-2020 09:24 AM

https://caasports.com/news/2020/9/29/caa-football-announces-scheduling-format-for-spring-2021-season.aspx

Key takeways:

-CAA Football is making plans to play a six-game conference schedule that includes the option for institutions to add up to two non-conference contests during the Spring 2021 season.

-Conference play is anticipated to begin on March 6 and conclude on April 17, with each team receiving a bye week during the seven-week timeframe.

-Institutions are allowed to schedule "non-conference" games against other conference members, but those games would not count towards the conference standings

-Based on NCAA guidelines, teams are allowed to begin non-conference competition as early as January 23.

This is not the concrete schedule, just an outline.

"The conference will use a North/South divisional format, with all six league games coming against teams within the division. The team with the best overall conference record will be the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Football Championship. Should the divisional champions finish with the same record, a tiebreaking policy will be used to determine the automatic qualifier."

This part seems a little unclear to me, since the North/South divisions will have 6 teams each, how do you play 6 games against only division opponents? Unless they set it up so you play one school from your division twice.

RE: CAA Spring Schedule Outlined - 6 conference games + 2 OOC - TDenverFan - 09-30-2020 09:27 AM

Offhand, it seems likely that the divisions would look something like this:

North: Albany, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Stony Brook, Villanova
South: Delaware, Elon, JMU, Richmond, Towson, William & Mary

Villanova is a little hard to place, since they are much closer to schools like Towson and Delaware than Albany, URI, Maine, and New Hampshire.

Long term, I would like if we stuck with a more north/south based scheduling, let us play the 5 southern schools every year plus 3 of the northern ones - but I'm sure Nova would object to the northern schedule.

I'll be interested to see how they do six games "with all six league games coming against teams within the (six-team) division." I assume W&M will play four of the other Southern teams once, and one twice? If so, my guess is that for the two-game pairings they'll put Towson with Delaware, JMU with Richmond, and W&M with Elon.

Yeah, that part seemed weird to me. I think one cross division game would make more sense, especially since I'm sure Villanova wants to play Delaware.

They'll likely play each other OOC

Who would we like to see us play OOC?

I wonder if ODU will try for spring football at all, that could be a potential matchup.

Stanford, Colgate, and Lafayette were our original OOC games, Stanford is obviously out, the other two depend on what the Patriot league announces.

Otherwise Hampton and NSU could make sense just to limit travel.

Well if we crossover to the North for a game I hope it's Villanova

CAA Spring Schedule Outlined - 6 conference games + 2 OOC - Tribal - 09-30-2020 02:14 PM

North
UNH
URI
Maine
SBU
Albany
UD

South
W&M
JMU
UR
Elon
Towson
Nova

Plus each divisional team would play one vs an opposite divisional team to make 6.

I hope we add one from Hampton, Howard, or NSU and one from VT, UVA, ECU, or ODU.

I don't think any FBS school that played in the fall will play in the spring

If they are permitted by the NCAA, which I believe they are, why wouldn't they? The greed that got them to play in the fall won't go away in the spring. Plus, in the spring there are the playoffs and a greater possibility for greater ticket revenue.

I think only a few FBS schools aren't playing fall football (ODU, New Mexico St, and UConn). Mountain West was a holdout but they're back in October. If this all holds, FBS is playing now and I can't see them adding a spring season.

Who's to say an FBS school won't play a spring game vs a FCS school in place of a team spring game. That could happen.

It will be interesting to see what schools we play for OOC games.

The season really doesn't count for anything other than getting better as a team. I personally would rather see just the 6 games and get ready for the fall season. If we make the playoffs we will get more games that way.

It helps London in his quest to get one last gig in 1-A football.

Nobody is going to hire London based on a spring football season that means nothing.

Am I the only one thinking the “how do you play six division games with only five opponents in your division” question was not considered by the CAA? I’m betting this is news to Joey D.

I did wonder. Not everyone remembers their basic math.

The article mentions that playoffs start April 24 and continue into mid-May. The NFL Draft is April 29-May 1. Will pose some interesting challenges once the playoffs start for teams that have players drafted and those that could be signed as undrafted free agents after the draft.

Am willing to give the league office a pass on this one. They’re at least trying. If someone from the athletic department tries to sell me tickets, I’ll buy. I can always socially distance in the student section if fellow old farts across the field are too close.
