RE: The poll to end all polls - 84Monarch - 09-28-2020 03:14 PM Easy way to remember Norfolk's pronunciation - "We don't, we don't drink, Norfuk, Norfuk" RE: The poll to end all polls - USBARNES76 - 09-28-2020 07:38 PM (09-27-2020 10:11 PM)MonarchManiac Wrote:(09-25-2020 11:43 PM)mturn017 Wrote: Norfuk also agreed. RE: The poll to end all polls - Monarch Homselr - 09-28-2020 09:33 PM It is definitely Nawfuk or Norfuk, depending on your city accent. At Granby High we would tease Norfolk Catholic (at the time a few blocks down Granby Street) kids with this cheer.... They don't smoke and they don't drink, NAWFUK CATHOLIC.... That's funny I do that too. I was born in South Nawfuk and lived there as an adult for about 7 years. RE: The poll to end all polls - EverRespect - 09-30-2020 01:34 PM Norfolk has absolutely zero New York, Massachusetts, or Louisiana influence in its founding. The "r" is absolutely to be pronounced. I think the "Naw" pronunciations came from early 20th century carpetbaggers. A lot like accents that you will hear from older folks from the Richmond area. That said, I think most people who are from this area and under 50-60 years old say Norfik.
