RE: The poll to end all polls - TheDancinMonarch - 09-25-2020 09:19 PM It`s pronounced "athletic desert". I'm not from the area so I probably don't use one of the popular choices anyway. RE: The poll to end all polls - mturn017 - 09-25-2020 11:43 PM Norfuk RE: The poll to end all polls - monarx - 09-26-2020 01:26 AM I refer you to the old Norfolk cheer, “We don’t drink! We don’t smoke! Norfolk! Norfolk!“ RE: The poll to end all polls - Grommet - 09-26-2020 06:05 AM (09-25-2020 07:45 PM)elon77 Wrote: One more poll. Suffolk. Yeah, I should have thrown Suffolk in there instead of Nahfik twice. Or was it Nawfok? RE: The poll to end all polls - Cyniclone - 09-26-2020 08:17 AM I have a friend who would call it NorFORK. Drove me batty. But she’s from the Midwest; maybe that’s how they say the name of the city in Nebraska? RE: The poll to end all polls - ODUODUODU - 09-26-2020 08:23 AM Glad this is finally getting settled.... They definitely said the name differently than I had ever heard it. RE: The poll to end all polls - Petey Hodge - 09-26-2020 10:03 AM There was a USAirways pilot who insisted on calling it Nor-Fork... during his briefings to the cabin. "Alright folks, on behalf of the crew Welcome to Norfork" RE: The poll to end all polls - The Flagship - 09-26-2020 10:25 AM It's Nawfik. And there are two choices that prove it. RE: The poll to end all polls - bit_9 - 09-28-2020 10:23 AM Depending on the amount of alcohol I start at Norfik and end up at Nawfik. RE: The poll to end all polls - Cyniclone - 09-28-2020 01:18 PM I've always said -fik, and people have immediately identified me as a native because of it. I think if you're a transplant it evolves to -fuk, whereas if you're a lifer, it develops into -fik I wonder what city has the most issue with name pronunciation? I know Louisville folks cringe if people try to fit in by saying Lewey-ville (they prefer Loo-vuhl, I think), New Orleans folks are protective of their pronounciation, and San Francisco natives don't like when you say San Fran or Frisco. RE: The poll to end all polls - Gilesfan - 09-28-2020 01:26 PM I say the curse word version and lived and grew up for first few years in Norfolk. I don't care how you say it unless you dont say Nor- FOLK RE: The poll to end all polls - Cyniclone - 09-28-2020 01:43 PM Obviously there isn't an etched-in-stone answer or we wouldn't have a poll with more choices than a Cheesecake Factory menu; that's just anecdotal evidence on my end. I will say I had a friend who called me from Atlanta as Norfolk State was beating Missouri to make me say "Norfolk" because she loved how I did it. Agreed on Nor-FOLK; that and Nor-FORK comprise the bright line. RE: The poll to end all polls - AimHigher - 09-28-2020 02:07 PM When I say Norfolk it sounds like Nawfik but when I say South Norfolk it comes out South Nawfuk. |
