Recruiting numbers - blazr - 09-15-2020 04:38 PM
With the NCAA officially skipping this year of eligibility it will be interesting to see how they handle recruiting/roster limits. If they don’t spread out the impact, this year’s class will be getting royally screwed.

Agreed, there seems to be no definitive plan yet as to how long, or how many, you can carry extra 'ships.
With signing day just over 2 months away, gotta figure that out fast...

The more interesting question will be, how many athletic programs can AFFORD to keep older guys on scholly while signing newer kids...

athletic scholarships are basically free. it's the university paying itself. It's just clever accounting. That won't be an issue.

It’s only an issue if your school has a set enrollment and the football player displaces a paying student. If your school is actively trying to grow which most are then it’s a non issue

Good friend has a freshman o lineman at WKU and other son is a HS junior being recruited to D1. He is under the impression that it will hurt hs juniors most of all. He told me coaches think a lot of good juniors will have to go the JUCO route for a year because of numbers.

This is what I was afraid of. I wondered if they would spread out the pain, but it looks like this years class will be the one to take it on the chin.

I agree, and I've said this from the very beginning. It was absurd for the NCAA to not count 2020 as a year of eligibility. All it did was screw somebody else....in this case, the incoming freshmen classes.
Some people say, "well, we had COVID, blah, blah, blah...". WELL, EVERYBODY in America had to deal with COVID this year. COVID has been tough on everybody....workers, churches, schools, restaurants, etc.....What makes these athletes so special? Why do THEY get a re-do, but nobody else does? Why do THEY get to take from someone else, in this case, the incoming freshmen classes?

I'm not defending Saban in any way, but that's the root of the issue. Recruiting limit is still 25. Roster limit is still 85. You've got to think some of the seniors, maybe juniors, at UAT will jump to the NFL, but who?
The point is, if UAT winds up with 75 scholarship players, they can only recruit 10. 15 players that were intent on signing w/ UAT are SOL or have to walk on. (yes, all the normal caveats apply with greyshirts that get directed to JUCO).
Sure, those 15 can go get schollys from Tennessee, but that's an additional 15 that get pushed down the ladder.
