Tyler Injured - WesternBlazer - 09-15-2020 03:36 PM

Evan Dudley@DudleyDoWriteAL

UAB quarterback Tyler Johnston III is out indefinitely after an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.

Not a surprise to many. These 2 weeks between games came at a good time. Gives Lucero some practice time with 1st team...

Hate it for Tyler, but hopefully he can get better. He clearly wasn't playing at 100%. In the times Lucero has been in he's look good. Hopefully he can carry that over to being the starter. With Hopkins out, who's the new backup?

“Tyler Johnston III has suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder and is out indefinitely. Tyler is one of the best competitors I have ever coached and I know he will take his rehab very seriously to give himself a chance to play again this season.“

Sounds like season-ending. If so, gotta wonder if Tyler comes back next year. I doubt it - at least as the starter.

RE: Tyler Injured - BlazeOn - 09-15-2020 04:03 PM

He apparently injured it during the UCA game. This from 247sports dated Sep 3: "his night appeared on its way to ending early with a reported shoulder injury". https://247sports.com/college/miami/LongFormArticle/Five-takeaways-from-UABs-offense-in-season-opener-before-facing-Miami-Hurricanes-football-151044246/#151044246_1 Probably the real reason Lucero got so much time against Miami.

My guess (and its only a guess) is that he's been trying to play through it and it has reached a point where that is no longer an option.

With Dylan Hopkins seemingly in witness protection, who is Lucero's back up?

“UAB’s Tyler Johnston out indefinitely with shoulder injury”

https://www.al.com/uab/2020/09/uabs-tyler-johnston-out-indefinitely-with-shoulder-injury.html

“ Redshirt freshman Bryson Lucero is the heir apparent on the depth chart as last season’s backup quarterback, Dylan Hopkins, dealt with a foot injury during fall camp.”

RE: Tyler Injured - blazerjay - 09-15-2020 04:13 PM

Word at the Coach's show last night was that Hopkins should be back by the USA game.

Tyler Injured - blazr - 09-15-2020 04:33 PM

IMHO, we got something great in the makings with Lucero. Will be good to see him navigate an entire game (USA I assume) and he’s got an extra week to prepare. I knew he would push TJ3 & Hopkins but didn’t expect him to look as polished as he has. Biggest weakness I’ve seen with him is selling the option/play action, but time is a great coach for that and TJ3, who excels at that, will be around as a mentor (I assume).

Never good time for an injury, but not burning a year of eligibility is good timing for Johnston.

I absolutely hate it for him, but this is the correct call. I hope TJIII is able to get healthy.

RE: Tyler Injured - biglizard - 09-15-2020 04:41 PM

The Miami game makes so much more sense now. Clark probably knew this was coming and didn't want to throw Lucero to the wolves. You could tell something wasn't right with TJ

On a positive note, the way TJ is blowing through school he may get tenure before he runs out of eligibility

Hopkins should be ready by USA game. If not, then Jalen Parker becomes the backup. Safe money is Hopkins finds a way to get ready to be the backup.

So two games into the season we've lost our starter, who missed four games last year due to injury. His replacement is working his way back from injury leaving us with one 100% healthy scholarship QB.

Not signing a QB in the '20 class was an odd decision.

RE: Tyler Injured - BlazerMatt - 09-15-2020 08:47 PM

we had some offers out, but it takes two to tango we were not going to sign a guy just to sign one if none of our targets were willing to commit.

I REALLY like our 2021 commit, though...

I’m assuming Lucero would’ve been the #2 this year anyway. He’s shown way more in limited action than anything I saw last year.

I thought there was a possibility he could come out of camp as our #1

I think they did a solid job getting Barker's kid to walk on here as well. There's depth on the roster that gives me pause, but QB isn't it.

RE: Tyler Injured - ATTALLABLAZE - 09-16-2020 02:50 PM

TJIII looked off during UCA game. No designed runs for the two games. Splitting time at QB. BL worked a good bit with the ones in camp. I’m guessing he was injured before the season, Clark was getting BL ready in case he could not gut it out. Just my opinion. Anyway we should be fine with BL and Hop. Maybe we can let Barker in a play to kneel down one time.

RE: Tyler Injured - BlazerGreen - 09-16-2020 07:05 PM

So right now we have a pretty talented looking guy who hasn't played much, a not so talented guy that's played some, and some walk ons.

It's the most important position on the field. After watching teams like App St, ULL, Arkie State and others play, we need a talent upgrade there. More athleticism so we have a true run-pass option. More quality depth because we seem to get a QB hurt at some point every season.

Well, we know what to look for in next year's draft.
