There is a stadium much closer in mileage than this. Granted it's in another country, but it would accommodate SDSU and it's fanbase.

Apparently Petco wasn't an option due to the possibility of playoff baseball, but you'd still think they could've worked something out where they play most of their games at Petco, and maybe just a game or 2 in October in LA.

I lived in San Diego for 3 years recently and worked at SDSU. I can't recall a single person in any of my social circles or work circles who visited Tijuana while I was there. One of my students lived in TJ, but he was an American who was doing it to save money (it didn't work, as his apartment was robbed multiple times).

San Diegans do frequently visit Mexico, but usually only by plane. Typically if people had family in Tijuana, the family would come to the USA to visit them, not the other way around. Tijuana is just too dangerous these days.

Also, the border crossing is frequently very backed up. A 30 minute wait is pretty common, and 1 hour is not unheard of. I can't imagine how long it would take to process 20,000 extra cars all trying to arrive at the same time. It might actually end up being a shorter commute to Carson.

Yeah. SDSU just named their college of business after the Padres owner. And I seem to recall reading somewhere that he was willing to work with SDSU for a short-term football solution. Petco would be much more convenient for SDSU fans.

I wonder why that didn't work out?

That plus blowback from the conservative part of the CFB fan base, probably nationwide. Imagine a CFB team playing its games in Mexico. All the players in the Mountain West would have to get passports as well.

Push back home and home agreements and just play the conference games there and go on the road for 3 P5 buy games (to make some money and get exposure) and one "home" game at a neutral site anywhere in the USA for more $$$ and exposure i.e. Texas at SDSU in San Antonio or BYU at SDSU in Las Vegas, Notre Dame at SDSU (LA New Stadium)

SDSU fan here. Alienating fans assumes fans will be allowed in stadiums in the fall of 2021. This is California after all. I'm fine with it and will get season tickets despite the travel to have priority seats in the new stadium. Qualcomm Stadium may have hosted multiple super bowls but it was the worst collegiate football stadium in the nation at I won't miss it one bit. The new stadium is going to be INCREDIBLE!

I would imagine two years of pain for a great payoff makes this tolerable for most season ticket holders.

The article suggests that Petco cannot accommodate a football field as currently configured. Playing football there may require removing portions of permanent stands either in the infield, outfield or both, including the concrete underneath them. It can be done, but is probably too costly to undertake for two seasons.

Not using Petco was covered in the article:

Quote:Petco Park seats 40,209, but the field is not large enough to accommodate football as presently configured.

Petco was previously offered to SDSU, did something change in its configuration in the past ~2-3 years?

Sounds like Fowler was just paying attention to the scheduling concerns and didn't think to consider whether a football field would fit the facility. Either that or he lacked access to a tape measure.

It is not all bad. Dignity Health Sports Park is not a bad place to watch a game. It is easy to get in and out of the stadium. The game will be covered in the Southern California newspapers, such as the LA Times. Opposing coaches will not mind. They can make some recruiting stops before-and-after the game. One question would be the starting times for the games. If you are driving up from San Diego, it might be nice to start the games earlier.

The renderings do look impressive. It will be a great home venue, and should be a help in recruiting too, I'd imagine.

Does Marshall Faulk ever come back?

Why didn't they look at the stadium in Corona?

Too small and too close to the Coliseum.

The Banc of California Stadium is in LA, next to USC. It is the home of LAFC soccer. Dignity Health Sports Park is located 12 miles south in Carson or about 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. Dignity is the home of the LA Galaxy. If you are driving from San Diego, it is much easier to go to Carson and the stadium is a better fit for football.

From the article; "The largest local venues for football beyond SDCCU Stadium are located at University of San Diego, Southwestern College and Mesa College and none of them seat more than 7,500 fans. Petco Park seats 40,209, but the field is not large enough to accommodate football as presently configured."
