Football cancelled! - oilgasusa - 09-05-2020 12:16 PM

Just my opinion, but I think it's ridiculous that the MAC quit on the players. Same goes for B10, Pac, and MT West. How is it that 6 conferences are playing, and these pansy conferences throw in the towel? They play outside, they are young, and they want to play. Of course those with underlying medical conditions should not play if they choose. Same goes for all players, if they don't want to play it's their choice. As far as playing in the spring, it's stupid for a lot of reasons. Also, any talk of dropping down to D1AA is moronic.

I agree with everything in this post. The whole decision is more complicated than just choosing to play or not to play though. I really think when the Big Ten temporarily moved to a conference only season eliminating many of the MAC's "paydays" that the conference saw the writing on the wall. I'm sure they were in close contact with the Big Ten and I knew if the Big Ten didn't play the MAC wouldn't either even though the MAC announced first.

I'm as big of a football fan and NIU fan as anyone but I'm cheering against a spring season. It's just too close to 2021 fall season so just get all your ducks in a row for next year.

Thank you gentlemen

You nailed it oilgasusa. And, I'm tired of hearing media members jump on board with the decision and decrying those of us that disagree.
It appears to be based on fear and legalism. Those two are bigger nemesis than the virus itself.

Waaaaa I want to watch college football

Since Herbsteit is anti-fall football, he should protest by not working for ESPN. In solidarity to all the college players that can't play

Well thankfully opinions don't really matter when it comes to science. You don't have to believe in Covid to die from it.

I disagree and I am thankful and proud of President Freeman's courageous leadership on this issue. She is a research scientist and she followed the best science available at the time of her decision. We will know soon how safe it is or isn't for schools and conferences that are taking another approach. I do hope that very few athletes and fans and those they come in contact with become sick from their decision to play. We will learn much in the weeks and months ahead. Either way, I am convinced that NIU and the MAC made the right decision.

I also know that some people disagree and they are entitled to their opinion.

LET ME REPEAT, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY OR LACK THEREOF

RE: Football cancelled! - acolbert - 09-08-2020 03:08 PM

No it is not. We have become a pathetically fear-driven society.

I agree. We totally wanted to play. In fact we were still practicing and getting ready for a season. But the facts are we loss a large amount of money on BIG 10 games we weren't playing. And we also wouldn't be able to afford all of the testing and mandates the NCAA and state put in for us to be able to play this fall.

Doesn't matter how bad we wanted it. We didn't have the dollars to make it happen.

At end of first semester of school, I hope all colleges tabulate number of student Covid cases. I bet vast majority will be a asymptomatic or mild "flu" like symptoms. I bet ZERO deaths. We will have more deaths by suicide and drug overdose

You’ve already lost your bet as Cal U announces the death of DL Jamain Stephens. His high school announced his death as complications from covid.

+1. The cost of testing and keeping everyone safe is expensive. With the revenue from money games lost, the decision to not play is a no brainer. Schools in the MAC have greater worries than fielding football in the fall. Trying to keep each university running smoothly in a pandemic is going to be hard enough.

Probably. Recent studies showed that 30% of linemen in college have heart conditions. Whereas 50% of pro linemen have heart conditions as well.

These are big dudes who are abnormally sized for their positions. All mostly over 300 lbs, it would be reasonable to expect something going on. This kid who died was 6'3 355.
