Alumni Giving - StrikeGold1 - 09-04-2020 03:26 PM

Today I was talking to a fellow Bronco alum about the financial challenges schools and athletic departments are facing. He mentioned he had heard that less than 5% of WMU alumni give back to the school financially. Has anyone else heard that? That has to be last in the MAC or close to it.

I'll ask the question of all you Bronco faithful. First, are you a WMU alumni? And second, do you give back? If you don't, why not? Maybe we could send this to the fundriasing office.

I give back once a year. Small gift to the Gary Club and then a little bit bigger of a gift to the program I played for.

No, I had not heard that.

Yes we are alumni and yes we give back.

I am an alum and give back. I don't think we are last in the MAC as our endowment value ($402 million) places us 5th in the MAC behind Buffalo, Ohio, Miami, and Toledo respectfully.
We have 2.5 times are friends at CMU and 5 times EMU. We are 3rd in the state behind the big two and just ahead of Wayne State. I could not find any data on per cent of alumni donors so I went with what is available. Plans for the next capital campaign are on hold with the current economic situation, but it is big and aggressive.

Why do so many see us as last where we should have pride we are a leader, because we are!

I did a little bit of digging because I thought that it was odd also. President Montgomery stated in his 2017 SOTU address that only 4% of alums give back annually. 9th in the MAC.

Any news if athletics will be included in the next capital campaign?

I did find a report on google in 2015 that said national average for alumni was 8.4%.

The campaign material I reviewed was more a broad outline of funding elements to make WMU a destination university in the wake of declining high school graduation rate. No specific athletic goals. Most bullet points were for increased funding for scholarships, internships, overseas study, graduate and undergraduate research opportunities, student support services and endowments. All things to impact the student experience and opportunity for knowledge and job placement.

William and Mary lays it out.

"Alumni giving rate of 10% just 6 years ago."
What changed?

It's interesting Akron, which seems to be in more financial trouble than we are, is at 10%

I can't speak for others but I am never reached out to about giving. I think something similar to that W&M letter to all alumni about giving to help current students might be a good idea.

Does the Alumni/Development office and/or Gary Fund office have you current address/email? You can go online and update and make a gift, once you give they will be sure to follow up!!!!!

WMU alumni giving is an absolute embarrassment. I know that a lot of it is the failures in our Alumni Relations/Giving/Development/Advancement office over decades. Still, we do not have a culture of giving back at this University.

I used to donate every year. I told them I'd stop if they demolished East Campus so that was that. The school makes 1 dumb decision after the next..Instead of renovating/preserving the most beautiful and historic part of campus they tear it down and continue building more cookie cutter buildings.

The state of the university article said it was at 10% just a few years ago.
