That would certainly explain the $67.5 million stadium that opened last year. That's a common move for schools that don't consider football important.

It'd also explain why they hired a coordinator from one of the most powerful and storied programs of all time to be their head coach. Everyone knows that's a white flag.

No longer a surprise, but there goes spring football. I cant believe that ODU and UConn are the only two teams that cant seem to figure out how to play safely. As my buddy always says, "its hard being a Monarch fan".

Who said the other schools were playing safely?
Those who support playing, which seems to be the majority at this point.

I’m just curious why they are so adamant about playing basketball, do those players and coaches health and safety no matter? It makes no sense. At least be consistent in your narrative!!

I'd rather stick with our convictions than cow to peer pressure. I get that money may play as much as a role as health, but I still agree with odu admin's decision.

"ODU athletic director Wood Selig, who last week stood by the school’s August decision to postpone after other FBS conferences changed course and decided to play football this fall, declined to comment through a school spokesman."

Really, Wood? No comment? Somebody fire this dude immediately.

Everything that dude touches turns to ****. Of all the people who need to be fired, he tops the list.

If you don`t have athletics then why do you need an Athletic Director? It should be easy to throw this dead wood over the side.

This whole thing was botched from the beginning.hoping we play basketball.

MAC and MWC are playing now. Looks like it’s just ODU and UConn sitting out. Here’s hoping Wood really is smarter than every other AD in FBS football. If so i would imagine he will be hired away from us by the SEC or ACC as soon as this season is over.

RE: Was ODU's decision, right or wrong - Mr.BigBlue - 09-26-2020 04:46 AM

It is all about losing more money....NOTHING to do with health and safety. That is a cover. If we played with not way to recoup those expenses we would have lost more money. Another example of how unprepared we are financially to have been playing in FBS. I also think they knew how bad this season was going to be so they bagged it as fast as they could. Finally...if you don't think politics didn't factor into this decision you are mistaken. Bad decision !!!

RE: Was ODU's decision, right or wrong - Grommet - 09-26-2020 05:32 AM

ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY! NO MONEY! GOOOD!

Life doesn't occur in clearly defined black and white. It occurs in shades of grey. Anyone who says differently is trying to sell you something.

Was ODU's decision, right or wrong - Chillie Willie - 09-26-2020 06:46 AM

In the Pilot article Wood said ODU loses $2-3M by not playing. Maybe he's talking about NCAA money but otherwise I'm not sure anyone believes him.

With gameday operations, travel and more COVID testing without any offsetting revenue, that number would be bigger if we did play. It’s gonna take years for us to recover financially from this.

Hopefully Ricky wins fast and can draw the fans back in.

RE: Was ODU's decision, right or wrong - blueandsilver - 09-26-2020 10:42 AM

I guess you can argue either side. However, we are in the vapor thin minority of not giving it a shot to cobble together a season. I'm disappointed, and if it was $$$$ would have been glad to increase my support to see some Monarch Football. Just thought ODU was so quick out of the gate to cancel when everyone else at least tried to see what could be salvaged. Either ODU sports leadership are the smartest people in NCAA or we will have substantial egg on our faces.

We are definitely running in a very small circle. This will pass, but the interesting questions will be the ramifications of ODU's decision on student-athletes: Will the players be granted a 'free season' for the one they missed? If the seniors stick around for a post senior year, what are the ramifications for scholarship players and the incoming class -- will the NCAA increase the scholarship cap for 3 FBS football teams that did not compete?, give everyone another season and expand the scholarship caps for a finite period?, or say tough luck ODU - you made your decision and decisions have consequences?

Was ODU's decision, right or wrong - benny_t - 09-26-2020 10:51 AM

For all of the ODU made the right decision crowd. If canceling football is the right decision for our players safety. When can we expect them to cancel basketball season. No significant breakthrough on treatment and no vaccine. For the safety of our basketball players I think we need to go ahead and cancel bball season too.
