I haven't heard anything. I hope that game and the Wake game are rescheduled though. Don't care about UCONN.

Wasn't it the ACC's decision to not have non conf away games the reason we lost the UVA and Wake games? They could say their hands were tied.

They could, except UVA could have still chosen to have us be their home game this year. Then they could have just played in Norfolk when we were supposed to play there. That seems to be what WF had in mind. Since they were willing to swap years for home and away (if that is in fact accurate), and we canceled on them I don't think they owe us anything. On the other hand, I can see the argument for UVA paying up unless they do follow through with a home game for us.

Plus, the contract is with the schools, not the ACC. Seems a school can do what it wants. Case in point, ODU not playing.

According to this schedule the game with WF would have been in Winston Salem

https://theacc.com/news/2020/8/6/acc-unveils-2020-football-schedule.aspx

Yes. But I hear (don't know for sure) the plan was for us to be in Winston Salem this year, and them to return the game to Norfolk next year. We were just switching the order of the home and home. UVA could have done that with us too, but chose not to play us as their "home game" this year.

So with the Big 10 playing now and the PAC 12 MAC and MWC talking about doing the same, looks like ODU, UCONN and NMST maybe the only ones left not playing.

From an exposure perspective we may have shot our selves in the foot, especially if all these other conferences decide to play. But playing does nothing for us except lose the school a load of cash due to lost ticket sales. Although I guess they save on game day production costs, vendors etc. So maybe it is a wash. I guess we could put together an independent schedule somehow? maybe? I don't know?

At this point? Doubt it. And the exposure period is coming to a close. When the Big10 come back all the good TV slots are gone and all the G5 teams sitting in the top 25 vanish. And frankly with the way we were forced to practice, no more than 50 at a time with new coach and schemes. I'm not sure that's something you would have wanted to showcase. Games are hit or miss whether they will be cancelled and it will likely get worse as fall comes in. I supported the admin's decision but if all the other conferences go chasing the B1G back in then we'll lose some cover and be hanging out with a couple of independents.

It's easy to look back and say we should have played. But when CUSA had their meeting to decide, we couldn't practice under the governor's restrictions and we definitely couldn't host games.

Had CUSA delayed like the MWC and MAC, I think we'd be playing since those restrictions are no longer in place. But that's not the direction the league went in and we had to make a call with the information and restrictions that were in place at that time.

And I wonder if the conference is regretting that decision with all of the games being cancelled.

Charlotte canceled it's game at UNC for this Saturday due to COVID 19 issues. Something tells me this won't be the only game cancelled this year.

Yep. Adults with the greatest access to situational information were permitted to make an in-the moment decision based upon the available data. No moonwalking governor thought it was his place to make that decision for them.

Amazing concept.

To be honest, our fans bear some of the responsibility for the situation we are in as well. Big Ten football is happening because there was a massive outcry, and people put enough pressure on the league and the politicians that were keeping them from playing that they had to reverse course. That didn't happen here. I heard no outcry, no media criticism. Everyone, as is often the case with ODU fans, just went along with whatever crap sandwich the admin wanted to feed us.

Okay while i agree there was little to no resistance from the fanbase as a collective group at ODU you have to put things in perspective here. BIG10 exposure + Revenue vs Our measly TV exposure + Revenue is not even on the same scale. BIG 10 board might have more to lose from not playing than us is all i am saying and you can say their fan and parent protests made the difference but that's just not true or at least not the complete truth. Game of numbers.

RE: Was ODU's decision, right or wrong - mturn017 - 09-18-2020 10:33 AM

To go through all of that just to have your games cancelled. I miss ODU football but still stand by the admin's decision.

Our position = the position of the majority of programs
Their position = outlier, 1 of 4 schools, only school in VA, only school in The South, only school in CUSA, could end up being 1 of only 4 schools that doesn't play based on what we are seeing start to happen.

So yeah, I am the one that is out of touch.

My understanding is the games are postponed, not cancelled. They could reschedule, although the chances of working that out by the end of the season are slim. I think they all still expect to play most of their games though.

We aren't just talking Big Ten here. We can start with the rest of our conference. We can move from there to the other G5 conferences in our region, and then we can look at the fact that it looks like ALL G5 conferences are taking a second look at their decisions. We are 1 of 4 schools in the entire nation that made the decisions that we made.

I’m not saying your position is wrong, but to argue that your position is right because it is the majority position does not hold water. You argued against group-think with regard to COVID, don’t argue for it here.
