It will be nice having recruits and coaches actually able to sit down with each other. A large part of the experience for recruits is factoring in the feel you get from an institution when you make your visits, official and unofficial.

I do wonder though how much money programs have saved over the last year with the reduction in travel expenses. Yes, revenue is down, but a year of no-travel for the coaches has to represent some significant cost savings for the bottom line.

You bring up a good point.

The athletics department finances probably require multiple CPAs to figure out.

Take both the receipts (income) and expenditures which were projected and probably neither are worth the paper they are written on after a fiscal year which was completely impossible to project (on July 1 who knew what FB and basketball schedules and income/expenses would be like????).

I'd guess both income and expenses are both down significantly. E.g., recruiting expenses, as you indicate, is probably miniscule. Travel to away games - minimal. Income from road games - zero (no non-conference games), etc. etc.

As you indicate, the best way for a recruit to make a decision is to get on campus and feel it. If I were a 17 year old, I'd get my dad (for the non-sponsored part of the visit), and park the car at the student union and start seeing buildings, e.g., student union, rec-IM, library, upper class housing (The Villages), health center, maybe a few academic buildings, esp. if I were interested in tech or a life science.

Then go see the athletic facilities.

And then drive thru Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor.

RE: Unofficial 2022 Football Recruiting Thread - emu steve - 03-16-2021 09:52 AM

BTW, I remember my experiences as a young kid with a father who knew NOTHING about higher education.

I was completely clueless. I thought I wanted to go to MSU because of their great FB team. What else could matter in life????

I went as a one term guest student and was completely lost. Didn't adjust to a huge school which could be a 15 minute walk between classes. Wasn't near Detroit. And so on.

My undergrad school was Wayne State, a real commuter school back then. Lived the end of my time there in an apartment which was awful (but a block from campus).

If I had to make choices again, I'd do very, very differently.

My ex-wife made a wise decision. She was from the west side of MI and chose CMU. It was a very good fit for her. Her older brother, a genius, went 6 years to UofM with a masters degree in engineering. Good match from him. He married a UofM student.

Picking a school is like picking a mate or job. Got to do your due diligence.

If I were to tell a recruit anything this would be it: Athletics IS a big part, BUT you have to feel comfortable at the school. If you came from a small town going to MSU with 50K other students would be like a culture shock. Conversely, if I had gone to say Albion or Hillsdale, etc. that would have been a culture shock.

A rising LB prospect resides in EMUs backyard. Two Ivy League offers and now Air Force says a lot about this kid. CC better not let this one get away.

Nickel you are correct once again, this kid seems like the real deal, obviously he has the academic credentials as well.

Unfortunately I think the world we once knew may be gone. Today Scott Davis and Walt Church don't play QB for Ypsilanti High and then EMU. Magic Johnson, Jay Vincent and Lavell Blanchard don't stay home in East Lansing and Ann Arbor either. Hell, Ty Groce and Drew Lowder are only here because their initial forays East did not work out.

I think with the advances in the communication and travel industry, today's high school athletes actually view "staying home" today as a failure. I may be wrong but that is what I see going on right now.

I personally know one offensive lineman who chose EMU partly because it was close to home. 03-thumbsup

You missed a layup buddy. Canton is close to EMU. Think our OL from Canton was the one he was referring...

He is the real deal in all of the non-football factors.

My point is that I dont like to see kids like this get away because EMU didn't offer them. If EMU offers and the kid goes elsewhere then so be it. But if he is interested in EMU but EMU doesn't offer and is focused on a kid with equal skills from GA or OK then that's wrong. I don't know the this has happened in FB but it has happened in the past with hoops and baseball.

Canton is Wayne County and Milan High School is technically in Monroe County.

You could argue that Dimitri Douglas (Saline) is one of the most recent Washtenaw County guys, although while recruited by EMU, he came to the Eagles as a transfer from MSU who had signed Douglas out of high school.

Guys, I think we're off on a tangent. The post wasn't which recruit lived closest to EMU or was from Washtenaw County. It was simply a statement that one player chose EMU because it was close to home. Canton is close to EMU.

I think we all agree. I think we all want local guys to play at EMU. I do wish Creighton made a harder push locally, but the fact is that the losing seasons scared a lot of guys away in the past. I am CERTAIN that the recent wins against the BIG10 and competitive MAC play will bode well for us and our ratings recently are proof of that. Bottom line is....Win a bowl game and the recruits will follow locally. Simple, I know but if we capitalize on what I believe is a 7-8 win season, the local guys will open eyes.

If that was your point, you are 100% dead spot on!

I would actually say that I would give a huge preference to a local recruit! I saw A2's Micah Robinson's family attend her WBB games and put a minimum of twelve butts in the seats every game. If you watch a replay of Harkema's bowl victory, you will notice that most of our roster was gleaned from MI or OH.

You may be right about our recruiting strategy and if so that does need to change.

RE: Unofficial 2022 Football Recruiting Thread - Ken Barna - 04-14-2021 08:41 AM

Dear Friends,
Recruiting is not as simple as some of you are implying. How do some here know if Creighton and his assistants push hard on Michigan recruits? What role do high school coaches play in the process? As an example, the coach at Detroit Cass Tech is a U-M grad, through the years probably 80% of the players that are recruited there end-up at U-M.
I do agree with the point that records have some impact on recruits, and probably facilities as well.
The last point to make, is the fact that murders, rapes, etc. have not helped with Eastern's or Ypsilanti's reputation, and as a result have in some cases hurt our ability to secure a verbal from a recruit.
