The Timeline of UConn - CardinalBlackTrojan - 08-05-2020 02:30 PM

The Timeline of UConn:

1899-1999
  • Sucked most of these years.
  • Averaged 14,000 attendance.
  • Their last season of 1-AA was in 1999, before transitioning to 1-A as an Independent.

2000-2003
  • Went 20-26 as an Independent...
  • Averaged 14,000 attendance.
  • ... Then get invited to the Big East for 2004.

2004-2012
  • Won the Big East title in 2004, 2007, and 2010
  • Won 3 bowl games
  • Made it to a BCS Bowl (Fiesta Bowl) in 2010 (lost to Oklahoma)
  • Had Top 25 wins over #11 USF and #18 Louisville during these years.
  • Beat Notre Dame on NBC national TV in 2009.
  • Averaged 38,000-40,000 attendance.
  • Achieved a highest ranking of #16 during the 2007 season.

2013-2019
  • Get invite to the AAC after being left out of realignment.
  • Zero winning seasons while in AAC.
  • 20-65 overall record while in AAC.
  • Athletic department announces $42 million in losses in 2019.
  • Leaves the AAC to go independent after 2019 season.
  • Averaged 18,000 attendance by 2019.

2020
  • First and possibly only FBS team in 2020 to cancel entire football season.

Talk about a humbling experience if you're a UConn fan. It's pretty unbelievable to see how they used to be at the bottom, made it to the top, and now are back at rock bottom (if not worse). Kind of sad in a way to see that.

You may be right, although teams in conferences will likely go along with what their respective conferences decide for the time being. I really don't have a clue what will happen with regard to football this season. I tend to believe it will be a "mess". I just don't see how this will work out well without a national strategy to deal with the pandemic. The football field and locker rooms seem to be the perfect environment for the spread of Covid-19. Rich (mostly white) adults, who can stay safely in their offices, are making these decisions for purely monetary reasons, for often low SES "kids" (mostly black) who will be risking the health and maybe lives of themselves, friends, and family. The millions of dollars, in TV money, will not be going to the players, and only a select few will ever see an NFL paycheck. Actually, older coaches might be most at risk (especially those that are overweight or have other health conditions), but they likely could stop the season now if they joined together.

I doubt black or white plays into this...it's just money. Of course everyone has to bring race into it. What will you say when baseball season starts? That's mostly white kids.

Baseball is a whole different deal. Doesn't bring in 100's of millions of dollars and players can largely social distance. It's hard to simply ignore race, when most of the administrators making the decisions are white and most of the players are black. Interestingly the historically black college conferences have already cancelled their seasons (someone can correct me if I am wrong on that).

What you have said is 99.9% correct at minimum. I do wonder that if the HBCUs had TV deals and gate money the same as the Prig 5 schools if they would have cancelled when they did.

I do tend to see things in the lens of class and not as much with race, but I am white, come from a working class, union background and many that know my politics would likely consider me a Marxist, though I don't identify as such myself. It is very hard to pull apart class and race in this country if one is being honest.

Now it's "rich" (mostly white) adults that is apparently "risking" mostly black kids health. All players are free to walk should they feel it necessary. Fashionable speak today. Forget color, one can achieve his goals in this country provided he makes the sacrifices necessary (education, skills, work ethic). Brains and heart's share the same color. It's the necessary sacrifices that separates most of us.

I remember their poor fan turnout for the BCS game. I think they snuck into it late with a win the the ACC Championship but still it was bad.

Why would anyone take pleasure in any program's struggle(s), especially this year?
