Another domino falls: Big West postpones fall sports - HawaiiMongoose - 07-29-2020 06:09 PM

"Realizing that intercollegiate athletics’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic remains very fluid, the Board noted a decision on whether fall sport competition would be feasible in the spring will be determined by the Board of Directors at a later date and be based on conditions and circumstances that are in the best interests of the student-athletes."

Seems like it was a no brainer. Didn't the Cal St system announce it would be on-line only for the fall months ago? If it isn't safe for in-person classes, how is it safe for sports? Either way, California is seeing a CoVid resurgence that will require a new lock down to bring under control.

I'll admit it Stu, I was wrong. I figured the close proximity would make it likely for fall sports. A pause is the last thing Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego need in their new home.

And Mongoose, an opportunity was lost. The Big West could have gotten back Nevada or Boise for the 2020 volleyball season as I don't think the MWC will play in the fall (UNM and the Cal States on shaky ground, a covid outbreak at CSU).

jdgaucho,

It was just hard for me to see how the Big West could operate with no students on campus for the 5 Cal States, and limited on campus for the 5 UC schools, plus Hawaii's 14 day mandatory quarantine, which would need some kind of waiver (as if confined in an airplane flying to and from the Aloha state with recirculating air was not risky enough). Now the UC schools are all online too. But my main thinking was the lack of football, which was used as justification for the three FBS Cal State schools to play for revenue to maybe allow some other sports, is lacking in the Big West. So where is the justification? Where is the monetary stress point?

The P5 look to all be playing internal, and half of FCS has effectively called off fall sports, including football (some claim postponed, but that really means cancelled). D-II is similarly shutting down, definitely in California. To be frank, I don't see the revenues to justify the risks of playing for the non P5 schools. I don't see fans in the stands, even for P5, despite their stated plans. Health officials have said no to MLB, NBA, MLS and the NFL. So why would CFB be allowed to have fans in the stands? The loss of revenue games makes things problematic for the the rest of D1 to even play. The Big West is part of the rest.

Crappy news, but with most of CA's deaths and cases in LA County and the bulk of the BW being in SoCal this move doesn't shock me. That's too bad considering there is extremely low risk in college age folks dying from the China Virus.

Big Sky delayed the start of fall sports and has yet to postpone/cancel the season. With the SEC news, I'm think we might actually have a FB season. The BSC said they'd make an announcement by August 1st. We'll see how this shakes out.

West Coast also delayed start to September 24 a couple weeks ago.

BSC delays the decision until the NCAA makes its move. I'm not buying the idea that the NCAA will hold fall championships in the spring. And if they cancel them outright, will schools still play anyways?

The A10 is another that pushed fall sports to the Spring, and delayed a decision on Basketball.

I agree with SDHornet, postponed until Spring means cancelled, just nobody wants to come out and say that.
