Let's assume that there is a college football season played with no fans and teams pipe in sound effects like the pro leagues are doing. I imagine that stuff like playing the fight song or pop hits over the loud speakers won't cause any fuss, but what about crowd sounds? If teams turn on noises like the video below and crank it up to eleven then refs might penalize the home team for using artificial noisemakers (similar to the SEC ban on Mississippi State ringing cowbells), but there is a line somewhere between that and simple golf claps. What is it, and would anyone push the boundary? I suppose a program could give the justification that it's imitating the theoretical atmosphere of a normal season, even if very few stadiums ever sound close to Death Valley.
