Will there be basketball? - ez272 - 07-28-2020 10:28 AM

I have heard rumblings we will not play basketball until January.

I really hate it, but logic seems to dictate we are headed that way. Hard to argue that it would probably be safer and likely more doable without interruption. Conference only play would be the likely result, unless the NCAA Tournament was delayed until later in the spring. But like football, for teams at the mid-major level, the loss of revenue money non-conference road games could be big budget blows if conference only becomes the deal.

Watch what football does, and it’s success, or lack thereof, in having a season. That will go a long way toward determining the basketball season timing and format. MLB running into cancellation problem just four days after starting doesn’t bode well for the rest of sports, college included.

Baseball showed quickly what a mess this is. Unlimited financial resources to test players and try to keep them safe and they couldn't do it for one week. They stopped all sports when the pandemic was not nearly as bad last March, and now they start them up again. Seems crazy to me. The worst may yet come in October or November when the flu heats up. Attempting to bring college basketball back in January makes the most sense at the moment. It may not work then either, but starting in the Fall will almost surely be a disaster.

It is pretty obvious that the flu pales in comparison to this Covid Virus! We’d all love to just deal with regular flu season!

And speaking of crazy, what diagnosis would you make on these people who refuse to wear masks during a pandemic? Is there some clinical name for it?

As Bob Costas said yesterday, "We want sports, but we don't need sports."

Speak for yourself Curtis! I need sports! But at the risk of death, I can get by without.

Good point PTJR.
I saw a facebook post about how someone will not live in fear. They will mask up and social distance. But they will live their life and do what they want. The main point was we will all die at some time. Sadly, people have and will continue to die from covid, but the odds are in your favor that you will not die from covid.

And this logic is what I don't understand. Tell that to my mom-in-law who is in a nursing home where there are positive cases. I will go to a casino and play the odds with my money. But by God I will not go to the casino and play the odds with my life. That is just stupid.

I do not live in fear of covid. I mask up and social distance and I do things I want to do withing reason. I do not do things that are high risk.

Yeah, it’s why you don’t have Russian Roulette offered at casinos!
