Yikes.

“What I have learned is that it’s not all or nothing,” said a television executive. “It’ll be push back, push back and maybe play four or six games in late fall. Then maybe decide to come back for another six in the spring. There’s a whole bunch of possibilities on the spectrum of getting a season in. People think it’s a binary, on or off situation. More than ever because of the money involved, they’re going to do whatever they possibly can to get in 10 football games between now and next September. That’s what it’s come to.”

“The concept of delaying it or pushing things back makes complete sense from a conference office standpoint,” the coach said. “However, for coaches, to keep a group of 100 to 130 young men between 18 to 22 years old focused and not fall victim to the vices of normal college kids is in some ways unrealistic. Our chance to keep our cohort group healthy gets harder with time, not easier.”

It's pretty much inevitable to me, unless it's pushed back to the spring - even that option isn't good.

Quote:They have to motivate a staff and juggle unprecedented logistics to get their players to campus safely and remain COVID-19 free. Yet they do it knowing that they are preparing for a season that isn’t happening.

“I hope I’m wrong, but I think the season being canceled is a foregone conclusion,” a Power Five coach told Yahoo Sports on Sunday.

The worry among coaches remains the same: Are we really going to keep pushing forward with the season and wait until there’s a player hooked up to a ventilator in an ICU and have that become the sport’s Rudy Gobert shutdown moment? Luckily so far – from Clemson to Texas to North Carolina, among those we know about – there have been no known hospitalizations among the college football players who’ve tested positive. But coaches remain concerned that players with pre-existing conditions like sickle cell trait could be at increased risk.

“I cringe when I hear administrators saying that the health and safety of the student-athletes is first and foremost,” said a Power Five coach. “No, it’s not. If it was, you would have already punted the season.”

Thinking coldly and ignoring your humanity for a second, just from a business standpoint this is the worst possible scenario for college presidents and ADs. Take a virus that already had a propensity to kill racial minorities, inject it into a sport that has already been accused of exploiting players, a disproportionately large number of whom are racial minorities, add in the medical fact that conditions that almost exclusively effect racial minorities are big risk factor for morbidity and mortality for this virus. Layer this on top of the fact that we just had massive nationwide protests about attacks on minorities where the rallying cry was "I can't breathe".

Just ignore the human cost for a second. Do you really want to risk the long-term future public perception of your business on the REALLY SIGNIFICANTLY HIGH CHANCE that one OR MORE racial minority kids on your watch will not be able to breathe because they were part of your business model? The long term damage would be crippling.

I just don't see contact sports happening. From a human and moral standpoint I don't see this as a good idea. From a business standpoint it looks even worse. Live to play another day.

The other thing that stands out to me is that the Power 5 conferences are all desperate to play games to fulfill their big $$$ tv contracts. Money talks, so I can see them trying to find a way to make it work.

CUSA gets so little money from our TV contract that I just dont see us having the same urgency to try and make a season happen.

C-USA really want to see their games on ESPN ÷.

If the P5 "sucks it up" and plays and the G5 doesn't, I don't think they'll ever be in the same division again. I believe they're already eyeing this as an opportunity to make the separation official. Their rationale will be the disparity in resources.

That's the way I see it. That's why I hope its all pushed to the spring or canceled all together.

RE: Time to face reality: ‘No one is playing college football in the fall’ - BlazinBham - 07-13-2020 05:14 PM

Really don’t want to have to say I told you so. Apparently the virus is expected to only spread at nonconference games. You’re immune at conference games just like large protests.

Y’all already know the goal is to force us into FCS.

I do know of prospects that are upset that AAU ball is ongoing but they can’t participate in 7on7s.

If college football is canceled I’m retreating to a cabin in the woods because this place is going to burn.

My hope is just pushing to spring. I can't tell you how much I'd prefer to be cold at those early season games rather than sweating my butt off.

RE: Time to face reality: ‘No one is playing college football in the fall’ - Doktyr X - 07-14-2020 09:53 AM

The P5 schools will try as hard as they can to get some kind of season in; they depend on that income. For example, based on UA system numbers from a few years ago (2013), UAT brought in 750 million - 220 million of it was income from football. It is bad to be that dependent (30% of their income) on one sport as major revenue stream.

Which is why when the phrase, "the most important concern is the health of our players" is uttered among leaders of college football it is complete BS. Because if that was the most important concern the college football season would already be canceled.

I want to hear how they explain that the health of the players is primary when they're the only students on campus.

I think its much safer for the majority of our players to be here where they have food, nutrition and workouts together in a controlled environment.

Here everyone is in one location working out, and holding each other accountable for staying safe when they aren't in the football complex. The alternative is that everyone would be spread out over the country, working out in literally hundreds of different locations, exposed to thousands of different people collectively. The ones with good family situations would be exposed to not just their families, but the work environments of their friends and families. The ones without good family situations would have it even worse. It's not like the ~100 guys we have on the team would be self isolating if they were not here. They would be doing the same dumb **** college students do everywhere.

Those young men are Blazers. One day this will all be over and football will be played again. Hopefully this fall, but if not, someday football will be played again and those young men will still be Blazers. Even if the NCAA screws the pooch and everyone loses a year of eligibility and some of them never play for UAB again, they will still be Blazers, no different than Jordan Howard will always be a Blazer.

I firmly believe that that they are much better off, much safer, right where they are and hope that they can stay here until this all blows over whether there is ball this fall or not.

I heard a good point today. What are the legal ramifications going to be when a player who caught covid playing college football fails his nfl physical due to reduced lung capacity or heart arrhythmia? who is going to be held liable?
