Top Returning Players AAC (Updated) - StillJonesing - 07-13-2020 10:03 AM

Statistically, now that teams are returning to campus and the dust is mostly settled.

I choose conference only play since it was a very similar SOS for each team and eliminated more variance in OOC SOS everyone complained about. It was the larger portion of the season and a large 18 game sample size. It was also the later half of the year which indicates more about where players were at when the year ended.

* I included anyone that played 10+ minutes a game since they were in the rotations and potentially could make a bigger impact with more minutes next year.

RE: Top Returning Players AAC (Updated) - StillJonesing - 07-13-2020 10:03 AM

Other notables additions that could or will play with history, I included their conference samples since it was the later half of the year, bigger sample, and more easily to access the quality. Pretty well understood the P5 level vs AAC, vs lower major.

Eligible

Yetna, USF...19.0 PER, 1.8 Win Shares in the AAC in 2018-2019

Gilbert, Wichita St....9.9 PER, 0.6 Win Shares in the AAC

Perry, UCF....7.2 PER, 0.5 Win Shares in the ACC

Murphy, Tulane.....9.0 PER, 0.3 Win Shares in the ACC

Ivanauskas, Cincy....17.0 PER, 1.5 Win Shares in the Patriot (was much better his Soph year)

Need a Wavier Guys

Williams, Memphis.... 31.9 PER, 2.9 Win Shares in the 18 (includes one non D1) games he did play at Evansville, (only played 5 conference games)

DeJulius Cincy...13.2 PER, 0.9 Win Shares in the Big 10

Nolley, Memphis...12.3 PER, 0.1 Win Shares in the ACC

Chaney, Houston...16.4 PER, 0.7 Win Shares in the SEC

Watson, Tulane.....9.5 PER, 0.2 Win Shares in CUSA

If you got a player no longer with the team still listed I'll edit that out. I think I got most everyone removed. The league lost a lot of good players would be my take away.

RE: Top Returning Players AAC (Updated) - robertfoshizzle - 07-13-2020 10:32 AM

Tristen Newton was a real gem of a recruit. Wasn't even rated by the major recruiting services as far as I can tell. Assuming there is a season, I think 16-17 wins should be attainable for ECU. USF, UCF, and SMU should all improve too.

I still don't understand his lack of recruitment, he is a 6-5 PG and averaged 39ppg 9rpg in high school on a top 5, 5A team in Texas. Pretty easy to see he had upside, good kid from a military home too. We were flat lucky to find him, I loved that signing from day 1.

The last 40+% of the season all in the AAC was pretty insane.

15.1ppg
5.8rpg
3.8apg
1.4spg

on high efficiency

Newton also left low hanging fruit by not hitting his FT's as well in conference as he did the rest of the year or in HS. He shot 88.2% in 450 attempts his senior year in high school, and 76% in conference play. He could even be more efficient next year if he hits FT's.

Now that Mike and Hinton are gone, I do think Newton and Gardner are the best duo in the AAC going into next season. They might be the best two players they way Newton ended the year. Statistically they were in AAC play. If Dooley squanders them again he needs to go. He didn't even have Newton starting a chunk of the season and had him playing scared to get benched. He played him 8 minutes vs Coppin State and we lost. Once he let him play and took the clamps off he took off.

NPL is gone

RE: Top Returning Players AAC (Updated) - TripleA - 07-13-2020 11:14 AM

Tyler Harris isn't returning to Memphis. He transferred to Iowa State.

RE: Top Returning Players AAC (Updated) - StillJonesing - 07-13-2020 11:26 AM

I'm probably most interested to see DeAndre Williams of the new guys, he had such an insane statistical profile when he did play. Although he did eat up a D2 team for 29 points and 13 rebounds factored in. Still 32 PER is nuts regardless.

He only had 2 points and 1 rebound in 15 minutes and fouled out vs ECU though. He couldn't handle Gardner at all that game, Gardner had 28 points in 31 minutes and fouled him out quick.

Other guys I expect to do better than they did last year.

Chargois, he was better the year prior just didn't make the same shots and this true shooting was way down, most everything else was as solid.

David Collins was much better in AAC play the year prior as well.

2018-2019 in AAC play

17.1 Collins
16.9 Chargois

Guys that has played better in the past I would expect to play better than they did last year.

Pretty sure K.J. Lawson isn’t returning to Tulane.

I missed more than I thought I guess. Anyone else still in the draft process, I know Jarreau pulled out.

AAC's looking a little down to me. Lost a lot of quality players and I don't see as much immediate help as previous years even if guys get waivers.

Top 10 AAC HS recruits on 247 Composite in the top 300

#79 Mack, Houston
#81 Murphy, USF
#126 Eason, Cincy
#141 Lakin, Cincy
#198 Madson, Cincy
#202 Shead, Houston
#228 Saunders, Cincy

Not seeing the same incoming star power either to replace all the players we lost as a league in transfers, HS, or JUCO.

What sit out last year transfers are we missing? I know SMU has one from Cal I believe.

Don’t forget about CJ Walker or Sean Mobley for UCF, Mobley is now eligible after sitting out last year and Walker is in good shape to get a waiver.

I believe that D.J. Jeffries will be our top returning player by far.

Yeah, I tend to lean towards the top of the conference not being quite as strong, but I think the bottom half will be stronger overall.

RE: Top Returning Players AAC (Updated) - robertfoshizzle - 07-13-2020 12:09 PM

Right now, I feel like Houston is the only near-lock to be a tournament team, with Cincinnati and Memphis in contention. I don't know what to make of Wichita State with all of their roster turnover, but they could be in the mix. Haven't really followed what's going on at Temple and Tulsa, but UCF, USF, and SMU all look like teams that could be in play for the postseason if things come together.

Hightower has that murder thing going. Tulane moving on without him obviously.
