Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - dragon2owl - 07-07-2020 11:15 AM

Games that I've seen on schedules so far:

August 30th at Texas
September 6 vs Stephen F. Austin
September 10 vs Lamar

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - temchugh - 07-07-2020 12:06 PM

Only six conference games this year. A full schedule would include 12 non-conference games. I assume that we will try to have all of the away games within driving distance. I imagine it will include one or two home and aways.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - dragon2owl - 07-15-2020 11:48 PM

August 20th vs Oral Roberts

October 1st vs Louisiana.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - dragon2owl - 08-05-2020 10:49 PM

Texas has had some schedule changes but looks like Rice game is still on.

This is exciting. My son is eleven and plays soccer. It's his only sport. He's good. I'm taking him to a game.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - Ourland - 09-29-2020 05:55 PM

I've never been in the track stadium.

https://riceowls.com/news/2021/1/25/womens-soccer-soccer-adds-sec-transfer-serena-pham.aspx

Soccer added a pretty good transfer in Serena Pham of Alabama. She had two assists against Rice in a 2-1 Alabama win over Rice in the fall of 2019.

Interestingly, Pham has already played her 2020-21 season for Alabama (the SEC played soccer in the fall - maybe they are playing some matches in the spring too?). She had 2 goals on the season in SEC games this past year. She does have to sit out the spring as a transfer and will be able to play in the fall for Rice.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - Jonathan Yardley - 01-26-2021 08:56 AM

I've covered the SEC a lot and had one Alabama game this fall. Pham is a good player, clear left winger. She started right away as a freshman in 2019, then lost playing time later that year, possibly just hitting a freshman wall. She started 6 of their 9 games this fall (they will play a spring season) and scored against Tennessee and LSU.

Alabama has been recruiting more technically skilled players under the coaching staff that's been there since 2015 (it really can take c. 5 years or more to make that type of change, as Nicky Thrasher is dealing with at Syracuse), and Pham is a good example. She can take on players outside 1v1 but also knows how to come inside and connect with teammates. Came from the very solid McLean club program in Virginia. I haven't seen Rice play since Brian Lee took over, but Pham seems like a good add, and she should have 3 years of eligibility 2021-23.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - temchugh - 02-04-2021 05:58 PM

McNeese game cancelled at the last minute.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - Fort Bend Owl - 02-04-2021 07:36 PM

Actually it was canceled at the 8th minute of the opening half. Field conditions weren't playable. Odd that their field was unplayable because it's not like there has been that much rain the past month.

I figure it's worth noting why since most people would have assumed Covid otherwise.

From the Riceowls.com recap (https://riceowls.com/news/2021/2/4/womens-soccer-soccer-opener-at-mcneese-canceled.aspx):

Quote:"This was collaborative decision with the McNeese coaches, administration and officials that one area of the field was unplayable to the point of risking player safety," (Rice) coach (Brian) Lee said. "We appreciate the professionalism of the officials and McNeese staff, and wish them good luck this spring and to the community that continues with hurricane recovery efforts."
...

There is no result. By NCAA rule a Division I soccer game must reach at least the 70th minute to be an official contest. The match will not be rescheduled. Owl head coach Brian Lee, with more than 25 years experience as a Division I head coach, provided a statement.

The Lake Charles TV station KPLC had more information (https://www.kplctv.com/2021/02/05/field-conditions-halt-mcneeses-soccer-game-with-rice/):

Quote:...after three different players went down with injuries on the same side of the field, the game was called off due to poor field conditions.
...

The McNeese coaching staff and facility department have worked tirelessly to get the field in playing shape since hurricanes Laura and Delta caused severe damage to the area.

“We’ve worked diligently to get the north end of the field ready for play and felt good about it,” said Cowgirls’ head coach Drew Fitzgerald. “Rice warmed up on that side of the field and the referees checked it as well and gave it a green light. But within 10 minutes (of play) there were three injuries all on that sport of the field. After discussing it with the referees and with (Rice head coach) Brian (Lee), we decided it was in the best interest to call the game with the safety of the players our main concern.”
...

“It’s too early to say what the plan is,” said Fitzgerald about future home games. “We’ll get with our facility department about our field while also exploring other local fields to play.

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule - OptimisticOwl - 02-05-2021 11:25 AM

Were any of the three injuries to Rice players?

That is exactly what I assumed.
