Under Armour moves to terminate $280m UCLA apparel deal - quo vadis - 06-27-2020 06:44 PM

Under Armour claims it is deriving no marketing benefits for their $18m a year (an even dumber deal than the LHN) UCLA seems to be saying ... see you in court.

Under Armour loss $590 million last quarter and this quarter will only get worse. They have been struggling financially for awhile and Covid-19 did not help. This will not end with UCLA, but it had to start there. The only good thing about this deal was the money, the $15 million dollar signing bonus in particular. UCLA athletes did not like the shoes and were blaming them for injuries. This will probably be settled before they get to court. This was a bad marriage from the start, except of course, the money.

Kevin Plank is an irredeemable *******,
UA clearly sucks and cannot handle the big time, case in point their Bailing on MLB, but UCLA is also living off past MBB glory. Would welcome televising these proceedings if there aren’t sports this fall.

Yes, the court case could be more entertaining than UCLA football.

Cancel ND's contract please. Our stock options seem real stupid now. Jack you screwed up again.

Looks like they are also moving to drop Cal's contract (no longer listed on their website as a partner team).

Under Armour now only lists Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Maryland, Boston College, Utah, Hawaii, Auburn, Texas Tech, Navy, South Carolina, Northwestern, Colorado State, Cincinnati and Temple among the brand's college partners.

If there’s one school that shouldn’t be struggling on both revenue sports given its location, resources and history is UCLA.

Arizona State is a perfect example of how a school has so much potential and it has never materialized. But that’s another topic for another day.

Not surprising. You will see companies spend less and less on sports going forward. I wouldn’t expect any apparel companies to spend as much as they have been. Only exceptions will be for athletes like Jordan, LeBron, Brady, and European soccer teams.

That was always an insane contract.

I’m hoping SC can bail too - UA is a trash company with mediocre product. Most current players aren’t fans.

But they have to take care of MD

They could also be preparing to go after athletes. They could get similar benefits with a handful of athletes for a fraction of the cost.

UA was trash before the accounting fraud. And UCLA is a dumpster fire. They were made for each other.

Temple is dropping Under Armour. It was announced earlier this year

I read an article yesterday by a UCLA alum, I think an athlete, who said that he thinks the UA deal, while financially very lucrative, has hurt UCLA recruiting because the kids do not like UA shoes and apparel, it doesn't have the "swag appeal" of some of the other providers, so he thinks getting out of the UA deal could help in that regard.

Imagine being so dumb that you choose or disregard a school based on “swag appeal” you might get for 4 years.

It happens, a lot.

Will UA be the Russell of 2025?

Shoe companies seem to be pushing basketball playing kids to schools that they have deals with. Most kids want to be signed by Nike or Adidas, not UA. If UCLA had a Nike deal, I'm sure more high ranked recruits would start "choosing" UCLA.

It already happened and Temple signed with Nike (which takes effect July 1st).

Yes that is part of it, connections made at a young age. Wisconsin and Maryland had better seasons than Jordan school Michigan last year. So, not working very well for Michigan.
