D3 Bowdoin College cancels fall athletics, delays winter seasons - ccd494 - 06-22-2020 11:35 AM

No fall season for Bowdoin College (NESCAC). Winter sports won't start until January 1 at the earliest.

All classes moving online for the fall semester.

This is likely the first domino of many- remember the NESCAC and the IVY were the first to shut things down a few months ago, and then everyone followed.

Bowdoin was referenced as an FBS candidate in 2018.

Hahahahahaha

Fewer than 2,000 undergrads, already doesn't care about football at the D-3 level, sleepy liberal college town of about 20,000, let's start construction. Do we think 80,000 is a big enough stadium or should they go for the gusto and 90,000?

They'd be a great fit in the FBS NE conference some on here have discussed.

Someone was asking about the largest endowments at the D3 level. $1.34 billion is better than other D1 private schools with $100 million with fewer students.

UMass Boston and the University of Michigan Dearborn have done the same (fall athletics being canceled - not necessarily the other stuff). I think all 3 schools are D3.

Dearborn is NAIA.

But just because a school has a lot of money does not mean that they are a possibility for D1, especially if said school is bad at football. Cash on the academic side does not guarantee or require success on the athletic side. Speaking of Bowdoin specifically, they have won one game since the 2016 season.

2016: 0-8
2017: 0-9
2018: 1-8
2019: 0-9

Clearly they (and a lot of the other schools on the list I'm sure) feel they have better things to spend their money on than football. There is a lot that goes into the decision to move up.

I have a friend who went to Bowdoin, and from them I understand that they look at intercollegiate athletics as providing an opportunity for their students to have a chance to participate in an activity. The student part is definitely first before the athlete.

Darn, there were about 9 schools counting on the polar bears for a win this season.

Bowdoin's NESCAC compatriot Williams, winner of every Division III Director's Cup since the Big Bang, is also cancelling its fall seasons.
